(The Verge)   The TSA has spent nearly a billion dollars developing the "Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques" or SPOT program to discover suspicious passengers, and according to the GAO it works about as well as flipping a coin   (theverge.com) divider line 56

TSA worth every other penny.

2013-11-16 09:49:30 AM
Only a billion for something that adds zero value?

Most cost-effective and useful thing the TSA has ever done, then.

2013-11-16 09:50:50 AM
Thanks, Obama!

2013-11-16 09:51:31 AM
So 50% of passengers act suspiciously? Or 50% of people who the TSA thinks are acting suspicious really are up to no good? I don't understand the comparison.

2013-11-16 09:52:57 AM
Why don't they just measure the shape and contour of peoples heads with their high tech scanners to determine criminality?

2013-11-16 09:53:02 AM
The Israelis have been doing this for decades, but apparently Americans are too stupid to get it right.
it's behavioral analysis, a subtle art. USAians don't do subtle.

2013-11-16 09:53:39 AM
Meanwhile there's still nothing to stop someone taking a roller bag filled with explosives and shrapnel into the crowd outside the checkpoint and blowing up more people than if they had done it on an aircraft. Billions and billions of dollars spent on a circus of jokers and clowns.

2013-11-16 09:54:23 AM
The TSA apparently didn't get the memo that Israel's claims to quasi-mystical divination of passenger intent are nothing more than a smokescreen to cover aggressive racial profiling. Reassuring.

Jokers to the right.

Came to say this.  I get the feeling the El Al folks aren't former high school drop-outs who wanted a change from delivering pizzas.  They're actual professionals, and probably reasonably intelligent (at least 3-digit IQs) and well-trained.

2013-11-16 10:03:54 AM
Why don't they just make a separate line for white people so they don't have to deal with this shiat?

No terrorist has made it past TSA screening.  Just saying.

:-D

That's because the Israelis only need to break it down into three categories: Jew, Christian Tourist, Person of Interest.

A program like this could be effective, if the observation were being done by a smarter class of people than the GED holders that the TSA has staffed up with.

2013-11-16 10:18:41 AM
Headline is somewhat misleading.  The literature of past human screening studies shows a poor success rate.  What they actually found for the TSA was inconclusive as to success rate, because the only existing studies were inadequately designed.  That being said, I'd expect a proper study of TSA's SPOT program to agree with the past literature in terms of performance; I doubt they've made any radical breakthroughs in screening.

Many nations screen.   The obvious one that is really good at it,  is Israel.

The US may have spent a billion,  but they didn't have to.    They did get training from the Israelis post 911.

Most big Gov't programs are just jobs programs.    Spending money just to spend.

Jobs in this country are piss poor,   the Gov't has to spend hand over fist (and keep spending) or collapse.

It's how the USSA works, like it or not.

I move through Israeli customs & security screening faster than just about anyone without an Israeli passport. Except when I slip up and speak to them in Arabic instead of Hebrew.

So... You 're essentially just saying we should have security screening before we get to the security screening, because otherwise the security screening is too dangerous. But of course someone could just blow up people at the new security screening because no one had to go through any security screening to get to that one. I think you see where this is going.

The lies start before hiring takes place.

They pay no benefits to part time employees. The entire system would be part time, if possible.

The entire dealeo is predicated on lies and deceit.

According to a friend of mine at the DoD, the military regularly adds extraneous words to two-word terms so that they can be turned into three-letter acronyms.

I was singled out - I saw the scanner line all the way at the other end only had a few people in line, so I walked through the crowd to get to it. Big mistake.

The supervisors have GEDs. The screeners refer to eighth grade as their "senior year".
