Sounds like someone has some copper free plumbing to sell.

Yep, controlled experiments are always by people trying to sell you something.  Wait, that's not it.

Well they say it doesn't prevent cancer. If you really wanted to profit off it you could sell those reverse-osmosis systems or an ion exchange setup.

Copper doesn't cause cancer, but if you control it for cancer patients it might help starve the tumors.

I got shot by a copper plated bb 30 years ago. The bb is still inside of me. I'm doomed!

Seems like an interesting study. It essentially says that monitoring (and limiting) copper intake along with drugs that limit glycosis might kill off cancer cells. If true, it's another tool to fight cancer.

Of course, the homeopathic types are going to latch onto this study and say "copper bad!" and sell you a copper limiting head band or something like that.

Right after selling you a copper bracelet with magnets embedded in it.

And on the right side of that article is a link claiming copper(and iron) increase the risk of Alzheimer's. And another one claiming copper protects against Alzheimer's.

How did Vulcan society live long enough to discover warp drive? Or, did the warp core actually cure his cancer, although in a round-about way?

That confirms exactly what I've been saying all along!  Fluoride is made from copper.  That's why your water makes shiny rainbows when you spray it out of the hose.  It's an FBI mind-control cancer, I tell you.

Actually, if copper is *preferentially* taken up by cancer cells, this could be more useful in a lot of other senses, too. An easier way to deliver things to the cells. I wonder if you could make a molecule that's toxicity is 'triggered' by a copper ion catalyst or some such...

Dude, copper nanoparticles.  The first mention of nanoparticles in the literature is for drug delivery agents (those medieval stained glass windows didn't use the term).  Functionalise the surface, stick anti-cancer drugs to it, nanoparticle goes into the tumor, drug released* right where it needs to be.

Of course, the article talked about free copper(II), not nanocopper(0).  Now that I think about it, I like your idea.  There's probably a protecting group you can throw on a drug molecule that can be taken off by a simple copper-mediated catalytic cycle, and if the copper if preferentially taken up by the tumor (same rationale for photodynamic therapy)...

* - exact method of release is someone else's problem - unless it's a surface tumor, in which case you tether the drug with a photocage and use light to release it.

/someone else can come up with the details and do the actual lab work.  I'm an ideas guy, and a terrible synthesist

This could be like saying "If you starve yourself, the cancer will die first!"

We can do better than that.
