The Cottos were told that treatment could cost over $100,000, mostly out of pocket, because insurance plans often refuse to cover Burzynski Clinic treatments.

Gee, I can't see why...

He originally synthesized these sodium-rich drugs from blood and urine - the urine collected from public parks, bars and penitentiaries.

A: How? Did everyone piss into a hose connected to a holding tank?
B: Why? Did family and friends not piss enough for him?

2013-11-15 02:00:10 PM
If his drugs did what they said they do, it would be simple to run a blind test and see what happens. Since he has refused to do that every time they ask him, I'd wager he's lying through his teeth.

But he got them to swallow pee, which is the really important part of the story which the author misses almost completely.

/ On a related note, I hear Andy Kaufman is still alive?

Facing both a political and public relations firestorm, the FDA in 1996 abruptly changed course. It offered to allow Burzynski to continue treating patients, but only through an official trial.

OK, I fail to see the problem with this particular part of the saga... Not that he really complied, it sounds, but this seems like the correct way for the FDA to do this. Am I missing something about this part.

SPOILERS!

"Why does a doctor who can produce such extraordinary results continue to be attacked today?" Siegel asks. "The reason is because Dr. Burzynski and his patented discovery pose the greatest threat to an entrenched medical monopoly."

I hate this particular conspiracy theory more than almost any other, with the exception of the Moon Landing Hoax people. Sorry, this "Big Pharma Doesn't Want You to Know This One Simple Trick" thing is stupid. If there was a miracle drug, they'd be fine with that, they'd just charge a shiat-load for it.

Why pill form?  Wouldn't it have been easier, cheaper and more efficient to get pee straight from the tap?

There is only one true cure or cancer and that is Visalus. All you have to do is join my downline and buy shakes from me. You might even get the chance to lease a BMW.

I understand what it's like to want to quit going to work, and to have people just give you vast sums of money for no reason instead.   This is why we have organized religion, pyramid schemes, armed robbery, and Wall Street.

BUT... at what point do you decide that you personally are going to target parents of dying children for your free ride?

That's a special class of individual right there.

More non-funny, most of his patients are dead and maybe wouldn't be if they just used real medicine.
Ask Steve Jobs.

These quacks are not harmless.  They're murderers.

The BBC did a better hit piece, USA Today sucks so much they can't even copy and paste.

Curing cancer or 'selling hope' to the vulnerable?

Dr Burzynski's treatment did not work for Ms Petagine's daughter, Luna. She died last August. But her mother does not regret going. "I think it gave us another year," she said.

"If I hadn't have gone I would be sat here without my daughter saying, 'God if only I'd tried it' and you can't put a price on hope."

It is easy to understand a mother doing all she can for her dying daughter.

But it is harder to understand how Dr Burzynski has been able to sell his experimental treatment to the vulnerable for so many years.

And their site doesn't suck

This assclown is in the same league as David Rasnick and Peter Duesberg, the two douchenozzles who convinced the South African government that HIV does not cause AIDS. Of course, the real reason was an attempt to get their own useless herbal remedies into the sub-continent. The fact that an estimated 330,000 South Africans died of AIDS during this time doesn't seem to have bothered them.

There is a special place in hell for these people.

Maybe they didn't drink enough, and only the urine of alcoholics (the bar and park pissers, hell even jails are known for their toilet wine) is far superior when pretending to cure cancer?

If they actually believe in their shiat, though, does that make them  truly terrible people?

I mean, if they knowingly cause people to not receive legitimate treatment because they're scummy and preying on them, that's absolutely horrible.

BUT if they honestly think all that established medicine knows is wrong, truly, truly believe that whatever "cure" they have works better and WILL save these people, or prolong their lives, are they truly that bad? I mean... this guy sounds awful... but if his motivations are "I truly believe my urine pills will cure cancer, I KNOW they will"... are they BAD people, considering they believe in their crazy stuff and really think they are doing well?

Yes. Most people who do terrible things think that what they are doing is justified.

I'm also going to say it's very unlikely that compressing urine into pill form makes it worth $100,000.

"He's a snake oil salesman," says pediatric oncologist Peter Adamson, a professor of pediatrics and pharmacology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "This has gone on for so many years, it's really unbelievable."

I'm suing on behalf of the snake oil industry.
