Are you sure that's what "Mumbles" said, Subby?

FTA:
• Boston Bruins owner Delaware North Cos., which applied just last month for 121A tax breaks for land in front of the TD Garden where they plan to build a massive development with a hotel, housing and offices;

If that is the building I think it is, half over the water on hundred year old rotted wood pilings, then god yes it was blighted.

I can't comment on the others.

Mumbles is gone in a few months and is being replaced with someone who wants to abolish the BRA, so quit having your panties in a bunch, Subby.

well the article was saying that these developers are rushing to get these deals in now, before the new mayor comes in, to avoid having to pay all those taxes, so subby still has something of a point.

I hope the new mayor uses eminent domain to seize these properties then auctions them off.

How is Menino  still allowed to be elected? Hasnt he been mayor since the 90s? Does Boston not have term limits? And are Boston people still this stupid to keep electing an idiot? Oh wait Ted Kennedy kept getting elected.......

Doesn't mean that the property itself wasn't worth a mint. That's really the point they're trying to make, I think.

Seriously, just getting rid of corporate welfare and tax breaks would probably feed the nation's homeless for 5 years. I don't give a shiat how many jobs they offer, small businesses don't get to claim that.

And the corporations, sprots teams, etc. are still going to build, they just get to do it for free...

Where they're referring to is the big empty space where the words "TD Garden" are.  It's the land the original Garden stood on; they want to fill it in with development (assuming some sort of mixed-use - restaurants/bars, shops, etc.).

But there is also a side-point to what you were saying.  When you look at Boston's physical history, a LOT of the city is built on fill.  For example, this map from Wiki:
upload.wikimedia.org
To give you an idea, the Garden is approximately around where the word "New" is near the top.  Heck, the entire route of I-93 from the bottom of the picture up is almost entirely in reclaimed land.  It's one of the main issues the Big Dig had, to be honest.  Point being though is that Boston engineers are definitely aware of the issue and are used to working with it.

That's Lovejoy Wharf and I don't think that's what they applied for. That is getting torn down. It was announced a this past January that Converse would move their world headquarters there from North Andover.
Converse Announce New Global Headquarters

Maybe they mean the current parking lot literally in front of the building on Causeway Street?

Huh?? Boston is strikingly beautiful. Everywhere you go, great architecture, thriving businesses, people everywhere.

Detroit is the place to go to see blight. Even in the "nice" areas it's there.

It wasnt trolling it was an honest question, every other place I have heard of had term limits for their mayors, at least major cities, mainly so people dont acquire too much power.

Ok, the ted kennedy was trolling but I say the same thing about strom thurmond when south carolina idiots kept electing him.

Hes been in office since 93 so he did get elected but is only leaving office because he chose not to run, Im sure he would get reelected if he ran again.

under an arcane decades-old law

Boston has lots of old laws. How about we find one that allows putting these douche bags in stocks while the public is free to throw rotten produce at them and kick them on the backside?

The price of hotels in Boston is outrageous.

Go look at the pit that used to be Filene's in Downtown Crossing and say that.

Dude, the developer who owns the pit is actually buying contracts to get it done now.  Honest!

The housing market is absolutely brutal in Boston proper; this is why, say, MOAR luxury hotels or $3M condos are getting called blights.  I can't believe I'm actually considering a $0.5M mortgage to be no big deal compared to my rent.  It's important that people who are not as fortunate as I am don't get pushed out of the city.  Boston does not need to become another playground for the rich, a la New York.

Lower taxes will fix that problem.

"These incentives are unnecessary. I don't think you can consider downtown Boston blighted," said Matt Cahill..."

I wouldn't go to Downtown Boston for any reason. It's thug central and there are many empty storefronts. The Corner Mall attracts the rough element. Downtown Crossing Station isn't too welcoming though I haven't had an issue there. As far as a city's downtown goes, Boston's really isn't worth your time.

As a full-blooded Chicagoan now living in Boston, I have to say it is damned weird that I can't just call my alderman to get some trees trimmed, the walk fixed, or some fresh garbage cans.
