Medina regularly eats bags and bags of spicy chips and snacks. He estimated about 20 or 30 bags a month.

That's some quality parenting.

Bags and bags, but equals less than one bag a day? I'm not going to say that that's OK, but bags and bags make it sound like the kid has 3 empty bags on his lap while he opens up the fourth.  Of course, I'm assuming the small bags. If that's 30 large bags, then ouch.

Thanks for the anecdote about that one kid, ABC.  Unnecessary visits to the emergency room, huh?
Well let me tell you something, ABC.  I keep something in my cabinet that sends kids to the morgue.  It's diabolical!  Want to know what it is?

It's...

After weeks of on-and-off stomach pain, 12-year-old Andrew Medina told his mom it was time to see a doctor.

That's why in Rivera's practice, she advises parents to sub out snacks like chips for string cheese.

Sub out?  Like to the highest bidder?

I can't subscribe to her string cheese theory.

I'm pretty sure that the powder is laced with cocaine. Those spicy cheetos are hard to quit.

See I thought this was the parenting qftw:

"After weeks of on-and-off stomach pain, 12-year-old Andrew Medina told his mom it was time to see a doctor."

Maybe Mom should have thought to go see tbe doctor on her own after seeing her son experiencing chronic stomach pain.

Yeah, if he were eating the same brands in the non-spicy flavors, I'm sure he would be just fine.

"We have a population who loves to eat the hot spicy, not real foods, and they come in with these real complaints," said Dr. Martha Rivera, White Memorial Medical Center.

It's all styrofoam and chemicals, so probably not good for you, yeah.

I love some spicy food and salt and vinegar chips. The good ones will make your tongue raw if you try to eat a half bag all at once like an idiot. You have to mix things up a little.

Salt & Vinegar > spicy

Rivera is not alone in her concern. One emergency room doctor says she's seen kids literally doubled over in pain, coming into the ER after downing several bags of spicy chips

You'd think this would be a self-correcting problem.

CSB, My daughter used to love the regular Cheetos, so I bought 5 big bags..  and left them on the counter so she could help herself...

3 bags, in a week, and she wont touch the things anymore...

Ok, I get the part about the dyed fingers and the burning tongue, but making it look like you're pooping blood?  I've eaten the hell out of some spicy cheetos on a few occasions, but never have they made it look like there is blood in my poop.  Is that an actual thing, or does subby just need to go to the doctor?

I had gastritis after a Super Bowl party with suicide buffalo wings.  Not pretty.

its an inflammation of the intestines and the only cure is to avoid iirritating them by not eating anything for 3 days.  Just an IV for fluids and nutrients.  At the end of it I was so weak I could barely talk coherently.

The Flamin' Cheetos ingredients label doesn't say what makes them hot.  I guess it falls under "Natural Flavors".  However, a common misconception is that spicy food (spicy w/capsaicin from chilis) causes ulcers.

This study says that it isn't true:

I like a bit of spice, but I cannot understand eating things that are so spicy you can't taste the actual food. I mean, what is the point of that? If you eat those suicide hot wings, you can't taste the chicken or enjoy the chicken, all you're doing is guaranteeing you'll be in pain eating them and then in pain pooping them out. I don't see that as enjoyable.

A bit of spice in Thai or Mexican food is nice, as long as it enhances the other flavors of the food.

/also confused why Sezchuan peppercorns that numb the mouth are attractive

Jesus!  Give me some of THAT!  But seriously, I eat spicy food all the time and unless I'm otherwise sick, it does not burn coming out.  What the fark do they put in these things?

From the article:

Medina regularly eats bags and bags of spicy chips and snacks. He estimated about 20 or 30 bags a month.

On any given day, White Memorial Medical Center's Dr. Martha Rivera says she'll see five, six, sometimes more cases of kids with gastritis due to eating spicy chips, spicy candies and spicy delicacies.

"We have a population who loves to eat the hot spicy, not real foods, and they come in with these real complaints," said Dr. Martha Rivera, White Memorial Medical Center.

See? There's the problem. The parents let their kid eat 20-30 bags of this stuff a month?

MODERATION!
