I can't draw worth a shiat so it wouldn't matter how well I remember the outline of the continental US

everyone gets florida right.

I'm not as good as Al Franken, but, I'd be pretty close, other than my drawing skills are pretty bad, so, I wouldn't draw the shapes super great, but, they'd be in all the right places (somewhat like the 2nd to last map).

I was a military history major. Maps are a BIG part of the discipline. Not only can I draw a pretty freaking accurate map of the US, Canada, and Mexico, I can also do Europe, Asia, South America, and every country in Africa.

/ don't ask me to do African capitals though

Thankfully, not all of us are dummies...

Except for some weird ideas about where Nebraska, Kansas, Mississippi, and Alabama are located (hint: Mississippi is adjacent to a rather large river.)

TFA is stupid. In the first example, there was no room on the paper to properly place Alaska, so the person boxed it as is done on many maps. Canada is OUTSIDE the box.

I did okay. Not great, but I got most of the states correct.

I met a teacher who could draw a map of Africa including internal borders.

Anecdotal evidence at best, therefore worthless.

Those actually didn't seem that bad (with a few really poor exceptions).  I'm pretty good with geography-- I could name all 50 states on a pre-drawn map; but I'm a really terrible artist so I'd fail hard at this task.

The fact that three different people drew the Great Lakes in almost the exact same incorrect fashion (as a banana peel, maybe?) screams "fake" to me.

I can draw Europe from memory but not America. Too many indistinct squares out west.

Before writer gets all snarky on people, I don't see his attempt posted online for all to see.

Also, I'll quote Einstein on pointless memorization (and I'll mess this quote up)

'Never  memorize something that you can look up.'

Could it be the witty little remarks written in on every other map, all of which seem to come from people with identical senses of humor?

I get most of it.  I'd miss details like the shapes of the Great Lakes, and whether Maine is farther North than Washington, or if Florida is farther South than Texas.  And don't ask me about Hawaii.  It's just a bunch of small islands running away from a bigger one.

This happens to be the one thing on earth that I am good at, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Came to say the same thing. I did notice that most people missed North and South Dakota. More proof they don't actually exist.

See, thanks to the lie-bruls, all our kids are learning about are "critical thinking" and "reading comprehension" and "math."

Well, goddammit, I won't have it for my kids that I don't have! They'll be brought up on nothing but common sense and cartography!

Sure, your kid can adequately balance his finances, get a degree in something skilled and needed, and probably keep a steady job in their field, but mine will be able to draw a map of farking Botswana from his goddamn memory! I think we both know who is the clear winner here.

2013-11-15 09:48:55 AM
I was expecting something a lot worse than that, that's actually a fairly difficult task to do off the top of one's head. Granted, I'm not an American so there's an extra layer of difficulty for me, but I can't do Canada properly either. I always have trouble with the shapes of New-Brunswick and Nova-Scotia, not to mention all those big islands up there where (almost) nobody lives.

2013-11-15 09:50:35 AM
I know where all the states are, but I can't draw.

Pretty much this.

My wife insists I'm tone deaf because I can't recreate music on instruments. She can't handle the idea that maybe I just have no Elvis in me.

Hand people a blank map with the states outlined and you probably get far better results.  The drawing of maps is not easy even with reference.

Came to say this.  All TFA told me is that Buzzfeed is staffed by assholes.

//I guess I knew that already

Once in gradeschool we had to draw in as many states as we could in an outline if the US. I got all fifty (well, 48) but I started at the coasts and moved inland so I ended up with a bunch of extra space in the middle.
