dericwater: I think the one-child to two-children policy is about 15-20 years too late.

They now have about 3 generations of 1 child per family and once the oldest and the second oldest generation die off, they will see a tremendous drop in the population. Forced labor camps? They'll be lucky if they can afford the people doing their work.

And this is what makes the idea of China starting war somewhere soon scary. If you know your population will decline in the near future, you might as well use it before you lose it. Knock the population of your enemies down before nature knocks yours down.

When there are major declines in population, China, alongside the US and Worst Korea will invade Best Korea, thus supplying crazy inexpensive labor to China, women for the men, and a whole population of midgets to take care of the elderly and infirm.

Sybarite: Before everyone goes all Henny Penny about global population, population growth rates have been steadily declining since their peak in the late 1960s. It took 40 years for the population to double from 3 billion in 1959 to 6 billion in 1999, and it is projected to grow 50% in the 43 years from 1999 to 2042. Current UN projections show population stabilizing and possibly even declining after the middle of the 21st century.

Well I've never heard this from anyone who isn't a paranoid Alex Jones type... and for good reason. It's incredibly dumb.

The US is the absolute last nation on earth China wants an open war with. Their economy depends on ours. To start a war with us would be tantamount to dragging their own economy behind the woodshed and emptying a full clip into its head. Not only would vast amounts of Chinese wealth effectively vanish overnight, but their economic activity going forward would be devastated as well.

That's not even mentioning our insane conventional military capabilities, our enormous stockpile of WMD (enough to end virtually all life on earth) or that starting a war with us would quickly turn China into an international pariah that wasn't only fighting us but also our allies.

The Chinese drink tea, but that doesnt mean they are Tea Party stupid.

No. Lowering infant mortality is the way to lower fertility. There is a lag but it has worked everywhere. When kids survive early childhood predictably the families get smaller. When fewer survive the families are larger.

2013-11-15 12:14:59 PM

jxb465: They are now allowing 1.2 children per family. They will allow you to choose which 20% of the 2nd child to keep.

See, I was thinking that would mean some sort of Child credits (like carbon credits) that would allow the wealthy Chinese to buy the rights to have more children from the poorer Chinese, thus breeding the lower class into oblivion.

New bird flu strain infects human for 1st time

A strain of bird flu that scientists thought could not infect people has shown up in a Taiwanese woman, a nasty surprise that shows scientists must do more to spot worrisome flu strains before they ignite a global outbreak, doctors say.

This is a terrible argument. A country with 1.4 billion people does not need a larger manpower reserve for their military. In fact, the PLA has been trimming back for decades as they 'professionalize.'

And the idea that they need more people so that they'll survive a nuclear exchange is equally ludicrous. China's nuclear posture is completely retaliatory. Their plan is essentially to survive a first strike and then strike back with their own well-protected missiles. They have no capability and no plans to build towards a capability to launch a first strike and fight a nuclear war.

And in any case, they're not insane.

One child policies suck, but we don't need more people on this planet. Limiting population is not the solution, but having more kids than your environment can easily supply with fresh water and comfortable living is selfish.  Not only selfish to the rest of the world, but it is shiatty to do that to your children as well.

Well, it's more like economic improvements that result in fewer kids. But I was thinking that the terrible hygiene will effectively cull a lot of the old and weak, and could just as easily kill off those at the prime of their lives.

To add to my earlier post, I also don't give two shiats about the passing on of my genes.  I would have zero problem with adoption, or even sharing a kid with another family if I didn't have the resources to raise one alone.  I really have no understanding of why people's need to procreate overtakes common sense when it comes to people with no resources dropping multiple kids. This goes for first or third world countries alike. If you cannot take care of them, why have them?

kbronsito: What if China is not really closing those reeducation camps but its just sending its own prisoners home? Obama could then outsource the FEMA reeducation camps and ship the enemies of his socialist revolution to China.

But prisons are one of the few growth areas of the US economy that haven't been outsourced!

They used to say that there's always work at the Post Office but now that this is obviously not true, your politicians have to rely on prisons to keep jobs in their states.

ESPECIALLY RED STATES.

I expect that Obama will be smart enough to not deprive his supporters of jobs anally probing Hollywood celebrities and racially profiled Arabs alike. Instead of outsourcing American prisons from Nevada and Texas, he will probably import Chinese prisoners to be tortured in American prisons in upstate New York and Northern California.

Eventually, everybody in the US will be in prison or else work as prison guards, health care workers, or else production line workers for food service companies like the French firm, Soweto, er, Sodexo.

The whole country will be one giant prison camp but everybody will have jobs.

And I expect the Chinese prisoners can learn enough Chinglish to be tech support staff and call center workers for eight cents an hour, like current prisoners.

The Commie pigs will look more and more like the human Farmers until they can sit down at the same table and be more equal than all the other animals combined.

Welcome to Purple State America, where the Democrats really are as bad as the Republicans.

You can take an apartment building build for 200 people, and cram 600 in it.  Sure the people will all be able to live but the quality of life will decrease.
Sure we can pack the earth with as many as possible, but I'm not sure about how fun that would be for everyone.

In principle I could still be alive in 2050 or 2060 to see the Brave New World, whatever it is. Life expectancy would get me to about 2040-2045. By then we can reasonably hope that life expectancy is a good ten or twenty years more than today.

The demographic curve is a bit tight, given the resource base we have to support all these people, but we might be able to get over the hump.

The next problem is resources--many of our reserses of earth elements are only good for ten or twenty years. No doubt we have barely begun to scratch the surface of the Earth for some of these metals, while asteroid and Moon mining could supply vast amounts of rare elements with relatively low impact (apart from the rocket fuel used, but rockets can burn kerosene, our oldest fossil fuel-based petroleum product).

Our SF writers have been ahead of us for fifty years, so we have a good sense of where we might be going, both in the dystopian and the utopian direction.

The environment remains a big concern. Even if climate change turns out to be best case rather than worst case, we are facing the onging mass extinction. We are likely to lose some of our most photogenic animals and a lot of the productive capacity of our oceans and soils. It is not going to be easy to feed nine to eleven billion people, and it's going to be even harder to maintain growth rates that will support growing energy consumption.

The one billion people we had in 1800 could easily be supported with the resources that exist now and the greater resources that existed then. Living economically but well was possible for the human race then and probably at least until the population boom of the 1950s and 1960s.

We started to notice problems, unintended consequences and so forth then. I think this is not coincidence. We only started to realize the problems when they became big enough to see, which is to say when we were already pushing the limits of healthy consumption. Since then, a lot of our growth has been unhealthy and we know it. Even the denialists know it. They are afraid the bills might come due and that they, rather than innocent victims, might have to pay those bills.

Well, there are more of us than ever. As they say, most of the scientists who ever lived are alive today. So are most of the lard-butt couch potatoes.

We can fix this and many other things.

But there will be new generations of denial.

As a a famous Israeli diplomat said of Americans,  (in a quip that is also attributed to Sir Winston Churchill) we will eventually do the right thing when we have exhausted all the alternatives.

Until then, things should get very interesting for a lot of humanity. Interesting as in the old Scottish curse, may you live in interesting times.

I hope I get to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the end of the American Civil War in a world where racism is largely cured. I hope it is in a world that has not bombed Nagasaki with nuclear weapons more than once. That would be a great birthday present to me in my last year on Earth. And I hope to see my coffee plantation on Baffin Island finally turning a profit. Not really. I doubt if it will ever get that far, despite all the fossil crocodiles and turtles that scientists dig up in the Far North from the last time the Earth was warm enough to turn the Arctic into a brackish, almost fresh water sea on top of cold salty ocean.

thecpt: From what Chinese people have told me IRL, farmers still had 8+ kids anyways.

The more kids you have, the warmer your hut in winter. There is always work and food.

Of course, the same is true of pigs and geese. Which is why the Chinese peasant is the proving ground of almost every influenza epidemic. Pigs, birds and humans living so close together are the perfect storm of virus jumps from one species to another.

But how are you going to feed them once they've seen Shanghai? Maybe if they send home enough money, you can upgrade from subsistence peasant farming to intensive farming, but the ecological cost will be enormous. Enough dust blows across the Pacific to kill people in New York as it is.

And African dust is blowing the other way and falling out over Central America and even the South of the US.

Oh well, what goes around, comes around. That proves the Earth is not flat.
