Many actors essentially play a version of themselves in every film they appear in. Others can portray very different characters from movie to movie, to the point where you can not realize you've seen the same actor in two different films. The former are called "movie stars", the latter "character actors".

Character actors are actors that regularly get cast to play the same kind of part This guy, for instance, was in several shows and films playing organized crime figures.

Another example would be Dennis Farina, who was regularly cast to play detectives and such.
