A genuine, functioning civil war canon is worth quite a lot of money.

This guy
thebuyosphere.files.wordpress.com
who was also a San Francisco lawyer as well as appearing in an acting role on the original Star Trek, would celebrate winning court cases by firing his cannon off from the balcony of his San Francisco law office. Yes, a cannon. In the middle of downtown San Francisco.

In more weird-Trek-connection, William Shatner's role as "Denny Crane" in Boston Legal was modeled after Belli's real-life persona.

For a number of years I ran a local charity road race where they brought in civil war re-enactors to fire a replica cannon as the starting gun. It set off every car alarm within a half mile radius.

I would think so. Also FTFA: Deputies say the cannon was fired with only a powder charge and wadding. Police confiscated the cannon. He may broken some laws there.

I knew an archaeologist guy that had a few civil war artillery shells ( he was licensed to have them) in his basement. His house caught on fire and it burned to the ground because the fire department wouldn't get close to the exploding shells and I don't blame them a bit.

Isn't it impossible to fire an 'unloaded' cannon?  I would consider the explosive charge being placed in a cannon to be somewhat loaded weapon.  Safety precautions still have to be taken.  It isn't like you would want to stand in front of the thing during firing.

Agreed, it wasn't loaded with shot, shell, or canister, but exploding a considerable amount of black powder ( I'm guessing ) in a neighborhood is extremely stupid. I'm guessing he's some kind of

If you want a real treat, make your way to Fort Michilimackinac for their cannon demonstration.  The guy stays true period, by using steel, flint and cloth to light the firing cord to shoot the cannon.  The guys across the water at Fort Mackinac are also fun to watch shoot their cannon.  Doesn't matter which fort you are at, you can hear the other fort shoot their cannon.  I asked if they ever 'played war' with each other, and I was told they had to stick to a time schedule so as not to upset the shipping going by.  Something about it being a bad idea to scare ship captains.

csb - My father lives at a lake and has for over 35 years.  Great place to party and have fun.  Fourth of July rolls around and his neighbor unbeknowst to me, places a cannon down near the edge of the lake.  I don't know the particulars other than it is about 3' long and maybe 8" in diameter. It sits on a very heavy steel and solid wood base.  Apparently the guy made the damn thing himself.  All I know is, I arrive for the party, BBQ, beer, bikinis, fireworks, a rockin' good time for an early 20 something.  I walk down toward the water and BOOM!  I thought a bomb had gone off.  Seems he loads this thing, waits until no one is watching and lights the fuze.  I have no clue and it went off about 30' from where I am walking.  Scared the crap out of me.

Anyone been to St. Augustine and seen the demonstration of old-school Spanish musket fire?

He props the barrel of the gun up on a stick, and braces the stock against his sternum.  And then comes the earthshattering kaboom and cloud of smoke.  Amazing the amount of noise from a dollop of powder no bigger than a couple of grapes.

I was there this summer and get to hear them.  Dad and I were busy touring the fort and figured we'd seen enough cannons firing before to detour for the demonstration.  Awesome place.

CSB - Back when Dad was a teenager, he and a friend liked to fish in this small pond.  One day, the old lady who owned the land caught them and gave them hell for it because she was a crotchety old biatch.  The next weekend, Dad came by with one of his other friends.  The guy happened to own a small cannon.  Just right for propping in the station wagon, with a bore that was the perfect size for tennis balls.  They managed to nail the old bat's wall a few times from across the water before she tottered out and they drove off.

I grew up in upstate NY and our neighbor had a cannon that he would fire off every so often, especially the 4th of July.  No one cared since the cannon could not fire over the property line and a few big booms every so often were no big deal.  I even used to "serve" on the gun crew for special occasions.

It sounds like this guy did not have the property for the cannon, and was firing it mostly to annoy his neighbors.

That's the whole point. If you're going to have a trebuchet, you  need a horde.

And for a mangonel, you need a legion. Those huge arrows are hard to maneuver.

So I'm playing Rome 2 (which is not a terrible game, even if Rome is absolutely broken as a faction.  Took a while to figure out how food and public order work now, but it's not bad).

Best Siege weapon in the game is the level 1 Roman Ballista (that come with any blacksmith-type building).  Better range than the onagers and they have explosive shots.   I always have at least 2 with every army since they can kill about 200 people before the enemy even closes with me.

Nope.  No mods.  You do have to unlock it with a research somewhere, but once you do, any workshop building will give it to you.

And I just got to the annoying bit where the entire map settles down into a series of alliances so you end up having to fight along your entire Northern border to finish off that random faction with one settlement left, so having a battle-ending weapon is very, VERY useful.

/Just finished conquering the lower left corner of the map which was in a 4-way alliance and required 7 separate armies to conquer, and now it's time to redeploy for the Gallic Wars, which is a 3-way alliance covering northern Gaul and Germania and the conquest of the Eastern Mediterranean which is in a FIVE-way alliance stretching from Dacia to Lybia via the Levant.  Joy.

So I started out with Rome, which had a broken dual-AI system.

So the diplomatic AI would make an alliance with you, you'd pull the armies off the undefended border, the military AI would look at that like a piece of candy and declare war, and the diplomatic AI would go and get very, very drunk.

Thus, I don't think I've ever made a single alliance (Trade agreements, bribe to go to war with, and protectorates, but no alliance*) in Total War unless I needed a temporary breather while I beat up their neighbors (For example, making an alliance with Macedon while I steamrolled the Greek Cities) and prepared to go to war with them.  Ever.

And then I couldn't ever figure out how to get a really crushing, decisive victory in Empire (So in Empire, I'd trade 20% of my army for 60% of theirs, while in Medieval 2, I'd trade 10% of my army for 80% of theirs with the occasional crushing defeat to keep me on my toes) and I had NO CLUE how to run the economy (I conquered all of America and India before I became profitable), so it became a slow, steady slog across Europe (especially once you get mortars.  Holy cow, Mortars are game breaking.).  Naval battles were fun though.

*Also, the only time where I've gotten spanked late game was when I sent a diplomat  in Rome 1 to bribe a couple of Egyptian cities and gave them away to Pontus.  Early game Pontus is a pushover.  Late game Pontus is game breaking.  Seriously, they're worse than Egypt (and Egypt is how a game developer says "F*ck you, player").

Somehow in Empire I don't thing it's supposed to be easy even on easy or normal, hard well that is the word for it. Thing I love about these games I still have so much to learn.

And Pontus going over you that's your tactics unless you're playing super hard.. An army with archers and fire arrows will generally send Pontus's heavy chariot's into panic to kill their own.
