"Cordelia was diagnosed at age four, two months after collapsing inside a story."

Look, not to minimize the poor kid's plight...but it is an extremely rare condition...why, exactly, do we need to "warn other parents" about it?

This culture of "warning" others about either rare things, or obvious things really needs to stop.

2013-11-14 11:21:50 AM
Did she collapse into a Never ending Story? Because I've already seen that movie.

2013-11-14 11:23:50 AM
Is she related to Drew's father (the ELF rider from yesterday)?

"That is what happened to one northwest suburban family, and it turned out their daughter has a rare pulmonary condition with no cure.

CBS 2′s Dana Kozlov reports, the family wants to warn others."

Hey, let's create a panic among parents about a condition that affects .000015% of the population. That'll get some hits.

2013-11-14 11:24:19 AM
Subby, was that doggy porn ?
We all know that's not real.

2013-11-14 11:25:14 AM
FTA: The symptoms include fatigue and shortness of breath and are often associated with other ailments.

well that sums it up, great warning.

Don'tMakeMeComeBackThere, I find your lack of paranoia...disturbing.  If you aren't testing babies for more things every year, you're not helping the bottom line of hospitals improving medical technology.

It's not that rare.  It was why the Fen-Phen diet pill combination was pulled.

I would think it is pretty rare in kids.  Similar to the heart conditions that some kids have that make them keel over and die on a sports field.

"It's not Lupus...or pulmonary hypertension, so stop guessing that."

Okay, not to be too horrible on here (yes, I'm a mom myself), but: at what point is it no longer news because "them's the breaks, kiddo"?

You're born. You die. Maybe in between you get to see, hear, touch, taste, smell billions of wonderful things this universe has at this moment in time.

It's nice that the story is now out there, for anyone who wants to search for answers for their own children, and I hope Wiki puts it up, but....

So she,s a fainting goat?

2013-11-14 11:31:52 AM
What if she just watches the dog watch porn?

2013-11-14 11:32:25 AM
This is a 10 year old girl and yet somehow the headline has to be sexual. Subby needs psychological counseling

"Rare Condition Makes Life Unpredictable For Child"

So, just like normal life then.

Good lucking trying to go throughout life with absolutely zero stress in this rotten world, kid.

I'd rather this girl receive a heart transplant than Cheney when he needs number 3.

I'm free this Saturday if you'd like to get started.

Must have been an uncool story, bro.

But we know you get excited anyway.

The shocking truth is that we are all risking death when we play with the family dog and/or watch porn.

Nemo's Brother: I'd rather this girl receive a heart transplant than Cheney when he needs number 3.

Problem is she needs a lung transplant. Problem with lungs is that they have lots of immune stuff in them (makes sense as otherwise we'd be getting pneumonia all the time) and transplants don't last that long (about 10 years or so then you once again have crappy lungs).

Pulmonary hypertension is not rare, though it is uncommon. The article makes it sound like some newly discovered medical mystery. Any competent pediatrician would be able to determine there was a heart or lung issue and any cardiologist would spot it right away. What a ridiculous alarmist article.

KrispyKritter: "Cordelia was diagnosed at age four, two months after collapsing inside a story."

I figured out this must be a typo for "store," but JC on a saltine, can't people who "write" news stories take a moment to proofread? Are there no more editors? Also, if you want to warn others, perhaps give more of an indication of the symptoms and maybe what tests are used to diagnose the condition?

Just all around farking lazy. The story, not the child.

/great example of "journalism"
//crap content, written poorly

Subby's headline was funny in a way he may not have expected.

One drug that recently started being used fairly widely in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension is Sildenafil.

Also known as Viagra.

How about a heart transplant?  If theyve been dealing with really expensive medical care already might as well go the kind that allows for a little peace of mind.

If they want us to warn other parents, you would think they would tell us the name of the book.

My wife gets this condition every time the vaccuum cleaner needs to be used.

Sounds like she could use a little friend.

As long as you are not playing the family porn and watching with the dog you should be OK...

She takes expensive medication, has to monitor her vitals and sleeps with oxygen every night.

The best treatment for pulmonary hypertension is high doses of Viagra.

Damn right you better keep her away from the porn.

I am SOOOOOOO trying hard not to connect those in my mind.

The preferred term is "Raising Awareness", but it's tough to do these days because all the good ribbon-magnet colors are taken...

Cordelia was diagnosed at age four, two months after collapsing inside a story.

Was it the Neverending Story?

That only works if they link out to other resources.  How hard is it for someone being paid to write these stories to provide some "further reading" links at the bottom?

I've help with awareness drives for something that has a ~1 in 5000 incidence.  This one doctors *do* have issues with diagnosing.  However, the symptoms are so vague that it's easy for anyone to think they might have it after a presentation.  Fatigue, gastrointestinal issues, lots of symptoms coming and going, ... It's always hard to answer when people ask "Do you think I/my child/my friend could have this?  Should we ask our doctor?"  I give them the website, then I always say yes.  Even if they don't match the symptoms that well, it means their doctor (or nurse/student) has to look up the condition and becomes familiar with it, if nothing else.

I read this as she could die if she plays with the dog, so she watches porn instead.

That's why I don't have a dog.  If I'm going to go, why settle for no. 2?
