The cameras seem like a better idea than that headline.

Sounds like it could help eliminate blind spots. Now if they could find away to stop people from pulling infront of trucks when they are going down a hill.

/not a driver, just waiting to see someone get run over.

What kind of cameras are they using?  Beta Max from the 80s?

It appears the final units are smaller and more aerodynamic than the boxy test unit.  I'm wondering though if the cameras also have recording ability.  Then yes they could capture the (final) images of the vehicles pulling in front of trucks when they are going downhill.

Lame!

Cameras are meant to be an added accessory to go with real mirrors, not a replacement of.

CSB: trucker is at a redlight(back from the line a touch), has a tall hood(not a slope nose). Car sneaks up and cuts in tight in front of him to be first in line. Trucker knows the light cycle and starts to roll ahead. Car gets shoved into the intersection and eventually starts honking its horn.

CSB: That bumper on the back of a trailer is called a car catcher. It is quite good at shoving the cars radiator back to the engine and hardly being noticed by the transport-truck driver. Whether its a car that doesn't understand trucks shifting gears with slight lulls from a starting from a stop, or a car being squished because it was riding the blind spot prior to the truck reversing.

If that becomes legal then you will see every high performance car marque in the world abandon mirrors for cameras simply for the improved aerodynamics.

Why not just put aerodynamic things on the mirrors with cameras on the front and rear of the truck?

hmm, I can see that being very useful. Plus, you can automate it so the driver doesn't have to take his eyes of the road.

Bad idea...

The Testarossa looked odd enough with only one sideview mirror. A car with no mirrors would look like a person with no arms.

Two things: I work at the National Research Council, and also that girl was holding her boobs the whole time

I am going to have to watch that again. I missed something. They are removing the mirrors and putting on cameras? He isn't quite clear about what they are doing? Removing mirrors and putting on cameras. Hmmm, I don't get what they are doing.

I agree with the idea of adding recording capacity...  But as I understand, even in sleepers there's a premium on space.

But still, dash-cam video could serve as valueble evidence to show just who was being the jackass that caused the wreck, and maybe put an end to the waves of lawyer commercials promising big bucks for tractor-trailer crashes, like every truckster is a complete sociopath behind the wheel... and I largely see folks acting like they assume the truck's as maneuverable as a Miata.

After seeing the new Volvo commercial with Jean-Claude Van Damme... this may be an effort by the Canadians to never let that freakish spectacle happen again.
