Because when they don't get permission from the elves, "accidents" happen:

I like the somewhat-mocking style of the piece, given that its apparent target is a nation where an even larger percentage of people believe in what are essentially Hebrew faeries.

Having been stationed in Iceland, I can tell you for a fact the Hidden People are real.

If you don't believe me, try camping out up there during the summer months, watching a midnight sunset with a bottle of the local Icelandic liquor  svarti dauði "black death" to keep you company.

You will be surprised @ whom or what begins to talk to you from behind the volcanic rocks........k/dar

Lots of cultures have someone come out and make sure that new structures are in harmony with the landscape, whether it's a Chinese Feng Shui expert or making sure that it doesn't disrupt the elves. It doesn't seem that silly to me. In fact, quite the opposite.

While elves, fairies and the little people are know to mischievous and sometimes downright dangerous Oberon the king of the fairies protects drunks and fools.  So +99.9% reading this should be good for one reason or another

Interestingly, they are also in hawai'i.  The menehune  also live under the lava, waiting for GIs to walk past so that they can grab their feet and make them fall on the abrasive rocks.  They also steal stuff.

I always suspected that Primo was menehune.

Went to Iceland a couple years ago and this is no joke. Went on a five-day hike and the guide would point out holes and rock formations and how to tell it was where the "hidden people" lived. We'd laugh as if he was joking, but he'd just smile and shrug because he didn't want to offend them.

Also, if you've never traveled to Iceland, go. It's a really cool place.

As a 1978 alumni of the Elf School, I find the lack of belief displayed in this thread...

...disturbing.

DAR: Having been stationed in Iceland

I was there from 2005-06 as a civilian contractor, working at the Naval Hospital.. I was one of the last 5 civilians to leave the base after things were shut down.

If I could move there and make a living, I'd do it in a heartbeat!!

Here's a prime example of an elf house, built to provide them a nice home in the winter, and keep them from destroying yours:

I used to post pics in virtually every Iceland thread, but it got old...

Magical little people do exist.  Just this morning i ran into the back of one of their cars.  He hopped out and ran back to my car screaming, "I am not happy!"  I responded, "Really? Which one are you?"

Thank you for posting...these are amazing, I love the shaggy ponies and your dog is huggable. Iceland and Croatia are my two top places to visit, as soon as I have the $$ to travel. Something about the landscape...so bleak, yet so vibrant. Can't describe it accurately, but pictures of it make me happy.

I leave fairy doors on old stumps on my hikes, from time to time. One time I went to see how one was holding up, and someone had added a small path of stones, and a garishly pretty costume ring had been left near the door as a gift. I have one in my yard and my neighbor's little girl loves to come over and leave them flowers.
I used to do the same thing when I was little. I blame my Irish gramma, who had a healthy respect for the "old ones". ;)
