This headline doesn't make sense, even when I read it aloud, and then start singing the chorus to "It's the End of the World as We Know It."

The graphic was as lame as the headline so..yeah... well... now the graphic the headline and this comment are equally lame, so that's nice.

Second headline in a row on the politics tab that's basically a farked-up word salad.

I'm curious to know whether the person who created the graph was able to control for the length of time a senator has been a senator. I would expect differences between relatively new and relatively veteran members. Veterans have had more time to cross the aisle and create some of that purple in the graphs of earlier years.

Why is Fark given greens to the most retarded headline about an article now?
I guess it is so Farkers like me keep TotalFark in order to read headlines that make sense, because this stupid article was submitted with a headline that didn't make my brain cry.

The article sounds like that was not taken into consideration.  I do agree that it would provide an interesting complilation of data to see.

A close analysis of the gif indicates that the split happened in 93-94 and little has changed since then aside from a few anomalous years in either direction.

Also, that's a shiatty way to present the data

So you say the whole will eventually split into two?

Also, 1989 is a completely arbitrary starting position that was almost certainly picked to try and hide the fact that the real anomaly was the makeup during the late 80's, and the time period before that looked almost identical to the current time period

So because Republicans have run far right somehow "the parties" have split?

that model is inherently problematic.

Though a good point, any time short of the founding of the country would have been an arbitrary time as well. 1989 is at least the start of a presidential term, which serves as as good a point as any to start. Also, given that this appears to just have been something someone did on the fly out of personal interest, instead of as part of a job as a political historian or something, I'm willing to cut the graphs' creator some slack about when the starting point is.

I am going to hazzard a guess but availability of easily crunched data could have caused the starting date.

Well, they pulled their data from GovTrack, which claims to provide data on all legislation and legislature votes back to 1789

True, it's not the greatest crime. And I now see that this "article" is simply reposting the work of a random redditor. Had we linked directly to the reddit thread (don't cross the streams!), I'd have been more inclined to initially give the creator more slack.
