It WAS a symbol of good luck before the Nazis perverted it, much like they did with so much of the past. Especially Nietzsche.

Just let it die. Yeah, it wasn't a bad thing once. But it is now. Get over it or move to Asia.

What a great idea!

It's a holy symbol. Always has been, always will be. Not only in India, but Europe as well, and even to completely unrelated cultures like some Amerindian tribes.

When the obsession with Nazis is over, it will still be here. The current irrational hatred of it will fade.

2013-11-13 08:32:05 PM
I agree; take back the symbol! Just because some assholes decided to sully a symbol; doesn't mean it's tainted forever. The trouble is; we've all been indoctrinated, I'm not saying that particular situation is good or bad, for the last 70 years: Nazis=bad, Swastica=Nazis, Swastica=bad.

2013-11-13 08:32:14 PM
It's OK, they're taking it back!

I agree. And what's with those Muslims and Jews getting all mad about that Crusade. Get over it, sheesh. Same with you Atheists. And those pedophile allegations are, like, 20 years old now. Get a life.

I had an Indian coworker who grew up in a neighborhood in NJ with a large Hasidic population.  Every religious holiday his mom would draw art on the porch with Swastikas all over it (it's good luck to have one in the entryway to your home), and, I know this sounds bizarre in this age, but his neighbors all understood and it was never an issue.

Yes, because a symbol used for thousands of years equals Crusades. That's completely logical.

The Nazis wore clothes, too. DOWN WITH CLOTHES! They spoke German. OUTLAW GERMAN! Historical knowledge be damned, NAZIS! NAZIS ALL THE TIME!

/do you work for the History channel?

so if the Nazis had chosen a flower as their symbol...

2013-11-13 08:40:14 PM
Swastikas were around a long time before jews and nazis ever existed and they will continue to be around after all the jews and nazis are dead.

2013-11-13 08:41:19 PM
We need to take back the toothbrush mustache too. I'd love to see a group of Jewish guys grow them for Movember.
Nazi symbols only continue to have power because we let them. Take that power back.

2013-11-13 08:41:40 PM
While they're at it, they ought to take back "concentration camp" too. It natively sounds like some kind of Tiger Mom summer academic camp where kids are drilled to improve their focus and concentration rather than a slaughterhouse live pen for humans.

kling_klang_bed: It WAS a symbol of good luck before the Nazis perverted it, much like they did with so much of the past. Especially Nietzsche.

It even looks different.  The real one is orthogonal to the viewer and the arms point clockwise.  The Nazi one is usually turned 45° and the arms point counter-clockwise.  They're enantiomers.

Actually, that works.  One enantiomer = morning sickness relief, the other = flipper-armed babies.
Likewise, one swastika enantiomer = peace and love or whatever the hippy-dude called it, the other = evil.

Actually, the most surprising part of TFA was this:

Asked to reply, Madsen said: "I accept the legitimacy of this criticism from the Jewish community, which was hit hardest by the Nazis, and resistance fighters, but refuse to let evil keep this symbol."

When was the last time you saw someone this side of the point say "you have a valid point" to someone who disagreed with them?

They'd have better luck trying to reclaim the STOP sign.

2013-11-13 08:44:45 PM
Sure, they're all over in India and don't carry the negative meaning. So go ahead and put on your your forehead cause people will surely give you the chance to explain that, for example during an interview. Sure.

Or those Christians getting all offended by crosses - what with them symbolizing Roman torture and execution and all.

BenJammin: They'd have better luck trying to reclaim the STOP sign.

The STOP sign is a historic symbol of oppression, blocking all forward progress.  It says "You may go this far, and no farther!" Don't talk to me about reclaiming such a fascist emblem.

2013-11-13 08:52:30 PM
The Nazis used crosses, too. That's given a pass because Christians like them. Simple religious bigotry.

Smash-cut '30-Rock' style to a week from now when this MENSA candidate trying to "reclaim the swastika" finds himself getting beaten down by a group of angry Jews: "IT'S A SYMBOL OF PEACE AND GOODNESS! (AIGGGH!) IT'S A SYMBOL OF PEACE AND GOODNESS! (OOOF!!)"

Next cut: same dude covered in bandages, sitting quietly back in the Meatshop as a tattoo artist adds Calvin peeing on the symbol of "peace and goodness."

ManWoman, a Canadian artist and poet, has been trying to reclaim the swastika from cue ball-headed bigots since the 1960s, when he was tasked with the mission via a series of powerful dreams. As he describes it, he fell into a trance and his soul "soared up into the Womb of the Sacred," where an old guy in white robes showed him the symbol and told him to redeem it.

I had a set of powerful dreams that gave me the sacred mission of staying away from anyone with swastikas all over their body.

On many Buddhist temple buildings and fortune tellers homes in South Korea.  Notice the symbol goes the other way though.

It's probably still too soon, but that's how you take the power away from the symbol.  Much as Kanye West is now working to take the power away from the Stars and Bars.  What I'm saying is, we need to be more like Kanye West.

The above flag was NEVER the official national flag of the Confederate States of America. It was used as Battle Flag and Navy Jack Flag. The above flag came to be as the first Confederate national flag coud looked like a Northen flag in the smoke cover fields of battle.

A squared verson of the above Battle Flag/Navy Jack Flag was used in the Confederate 2nd and 3rd national flag.

Those things are everywhere in Copenhagen's Carlsberg Glyptotek - a cool art museum founded by Carl Jacobsen of Carlsberg beer.
The swastika used to be a symbol of the beer, but fell out of popularity in the late 1930s for some reason.

How many of the people signing up, do you think, were actually trying to get a non-offensive swastika, and how many were there for some Nazi bling?

The Tamil Tiger flag was two crossed AK-47s over a tiger's face.

Nothing says "this is a symbol of my ancient culture" like a modern weapon invented on a different continent.

Initially, I thought I'd be shocked if less than 90% were White Supremacists.  But then I thought of hipster irony and general douchitude.

Maybe we should redo the American flag. Maybe a picture of Kim Kardshian's head coming out of a bucket of chicken, with two maxed out credit cards crossed over it.
