Nope, one part of the plan has fixable bugs so we need to scrap all of it. Sorry, poor people, maybe next time you'll choose to be born to richer families.

Obamacaid?

2013-11-13 06:13:43 PM
I'll be so happy when the Health Wars are over and we can get back to Drug Wars and the War on Xmas.

2013-11-13 06:14:53 PM
Nope. That's actually an abysmal failure because it's not the approximately 16 million people the CBO said would join Medicaid when they scored ObamaCare back in 2010. Never mind that several states have refused to expand the program or that it's 50 days before their Medicaid benefits kick in.

2013-11-13 06:16:34 PM
Almost feels like we should have just expanded Medicaid to cover everyone. Or something.

2013-11-13 06:16:59 PM

You haven't thought this cunning plan through: All the moochers will go to live in the blue states (which will soon be bankrupt), while the job creators create millions of jobs for Real American Christians in the red states. Checkmate, libs!

Easiest solution would be to have open enrollment for medicaid, move to single payer and be done with it.

fusillade762: Almost feels like we should have just expanded Medicaid to cover everyone. Or something.

Everyone is covered (in the sane states). No one is willing to be poor just to get it though.

2013-11-13 06:21:40 PM
So the takeaway is that the number of people too poor to afford health insurance at all in this country is astronomical, as that's half a million people in less than half of the states that expanded medicaid, in the first six weeks of signup.  The final number will be in the millions.  And that's just from half the country.

Man, we really need to have a livable wage conversation.

How will they get there?  Red states don't have public transportation to lib states.  Our cunning plan is backfiring.

o5iiawah: What should the wage be?

High enough that a person working 40 hours can afford housing, utilities/food, and health care.

High enough that we're not subsidizing Walmart and McDonalds by giving their employees food stamps and medicare.

Exact values vary from area to area.  Here you might be able to scrape by on 40 hours at $9, as long as you never have any surprise expenses, but it'd still only be an existence, not a life.

High enough that an adult working a full-time job can afford adequate necessities like food, shelter, utilities, health care, and education. It necessarily differs based on the cost of living in an area.

Medicaid. That's the part that's free or very low cost. So Obamacare is doing great at signing up the people who have to be heavily subsidized but getting none of the ones who'd be doing the subsidizing via their premiums. Yes, this is indeed a triumph.

Sure people can sign up in the future, however, it should be taken as an ominous sign that the demographics are so heavily tilted one way even this early in the game. The hazard of adverse selection was always a criticism of the ACA, and it's becoming clear that it was justified.

Let's start with housing, food, and health - which it doesn't cover - and go from there, huh?

Throwing a bunch of obvious luxuries in with some obvious necessities to make it look like poor people are just demanding more than their due is a Fox tactic.

Cable - no
Internet - yes (apply to jobs and kids homework etc.) but don't need breakneck speeds
Cell Phone - something that makes calls for emergencies yes, iphones hell no
Computer - something cheap yes
dishwasher - no
microwave - you're seriously criticizing something that costs under 100 bucks?
ice maker - no
2 cars - no
central air - some form of air necessary in many geographic areas
two bathrooms - no
kids own bedroom - no
day care - you can't leave them home alone all day

Actually, thinking on it, now would be a perfect time to revisit guaranteed basic income schemes.

The main argument is that guaranteed income creates an incentive to not work. But we currently have a huge labor surplus! We just don't have enough jobs for everyone.

So, the fact that some might choose to not work seems like a good thing.
