We're already one of the leading exporters of refined petroleum products. Maybe this will help keep us out of the bullshiat in the Middle-East.

It could happen!

Seriously though, most of the US' involvement in the Middle East is economically motivated, once you remove that from the equation the US will become less involved with the internal dealings of those countries.

I like my oil like I like my men. Black.

What's with all this oil triumphalism from peak-oil deniers? Yeah, there's a surge of shale oil right now, but the identified reserves are expected to last maybe 10 years. Then back to an ever-shrinking world supply. RTFA, it says it right there.

Repeat.

...but its power as a global energy force will fade over the next decade,

Thanks Obama.

This seems like a sustainable way forward.

So much for "green" technology.

/Thanks Obama.

I'm pretty sure Obama did everything in the world to fight this.

NO!

This whole "Well if we make oil here we don't have to care what happens in the middle-east" is complete bullshiat.

Oil is sold as a commodity to markets around the world. When production is cut ANYWHERE in the world prices go up everywhere.

They don't sell oil to the US first and then export it if they have any left over. The whole "We need to produce more here for security" is bullshiat.

The problem isn't that we don't produce enough oil and it never has been when you compare our oil production to other countries, its that we consume more than everyone else and more than we could ever produce by ourselves. Also, no, oil will always be a global commodity and thus we're at the mercy of fluctuating prices like everyone else and thus likely to keep using our military to keep oil supplies safe/thus the oil market steady.

Oil is fungible. Meaning even if we don't use Middle East oil, it still affects the price.

I work in the plastics industry, and our suppliers forecast that our raw material is expected to become the cheapest in the world by 2016. Polypropylene.

I think you're misrepresenting the argument.  It's not about prices, it's about access.  Things are fine and dandy until the other countries decide to cut us off.  That's why the goal isn't lower prices, it is energy independence.

It's still stupid but just for different reasons.

Not that this is a great likelihood, but in the event of a war in the Middle East that cut off the supply from the Persian Gulf, we could nationalize U.S. production and ensure that we had a domestic supply while Europe and China were left to hang. Anyway, shale gas and oil is a blip; the reserves are very small and will start to run out @ 2020, according TFA.

This. Also, if the United States cut it self off from the oil supplies of the world, and only used US oil it wouldn't last us very long. Its a pipe dream to think we could ever have an independent  energy future if we just drill for more oil. That's a lie told so that oil producers can produce more oil/profits.

That's a very liberal response you've got there. Did you get that from all of your other liberal friends?

"Quick! Someone has a conservative point of view! Tell them they're not unique! Bring up a fringe topic!"

Ffs man, this isn't my first day having a discussion where I express my disdain for liberal ideals. You're going to have to try a little harder than that.

Translation: I made a snide comment cutting down Obama with no real substance to it and without anything to back it up other than my own ignorant beliefs; in other words: deeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

What Obama did and didn't do for oil is not a "point of view." It's documented fact.

Republicans said he did one thing (they call this lie a "point of view" to deflect criticism of said lie), reality proves he did another.

Keep lying.
