The arbitrator determined that Starbucks must pay $2.23 billion in damages and $527 million in attorney fees, Starbucks and Mondelez said Tuesday.

That's a bargain, assuming the attorney in question is the size of the Statue of Liberty and made from solid gold.

/I know, I know, it's an entire law office of solid gold attorneys. I was exaggerating.

So you're telling me that a latte costs about 6.9 million dollars? Or is it a latte AND a danish that cost 6.9 million and you get 400 of each?

So what you're saying is that the government shutdown removed four thousand lattes from the economy?

This is an outrage.

Would you believe they had 2000 attorneys working on the project (and no other projects) for 3 years?

I'm guessing that's fees and expenses.  In a case like that, there's a lot of discovery, and that ain't cheap.  Associates can be $400 an hour and up and litigation paralegals can be $200+ an hour.  I'm sure the partners on that case were $800 to over $1,000 per hour.  Then figure each person working and billing a minimum of 180 hours a month, and the invoice gets huge quickly.

it's misreporting by someone who didn't understand what they read.  The $527 Million was for "pre-judgment interest"  in other words , the interest Kraft would have made on that $2.23 biillion had Starbucks  settled the claim at time of breach.  It's a fairly common facet of awards so as to remove any incentive for the party in the wrong to drag out the proceedings

And what does the market think of this news? Sbux up 46% since March and another 1% today. I think I'll stop trying to figure out the stock market now.

Usa Today got the story right,, Reuters was a little sloppy:

"An arbitrator on Tuesday concluded that Starbucks must pay $2.23 billion in damages plus $527 million in prejudgment interest and attorney's fees, "

the interest on the $2.7 billion being the bulk of that because statutory interest rates can run as high as 10%

Until today I would've smirked to myself and said "damn right fark starbucks!". But today I won a starbucks gift card, which has 'Starbucks' written across it in braille, which is pretty damn cool imo. It drives my sister (who is blind) nuts when her cards get mixed up in her wallet, and I hope more companies catch on to this.

Is Fark going to start a thread on every corporate lawsuit now? Even if we limit it to consumer companies we can snark on, there are thousands and they're pretty much all involved in lawsuits continually....

FTA: The two consumer products companies had been locked in a fight for three years after Starbucks Corp. fired Kraft as its distributor of packaged coffee to grocery chains.

This isn't even about the "specialty" drinks you can only get in stores. This is about their mediocre whole and ground beans.

Do yourself a favor and try these guys. They have a ton of varieties and roasts, and I am always immensely pleased with the whole beans I get. (Yirgacheffe light roast). I've been a faithful customer for 2 years and don't plan on ever changing.

(You can also buy from Amazon, and it's available as Prime)
