FTA: First, check to see if it's charged. Turn on your volt meter (if you have one), and set it to the 1000-volt scale.

Warning: Do not build an EMP without a volt meter.

Also, those caps are too wimpy.

Great, now I have to concern myself with a homemade EMP / homemade Faraday cage arms race at the neighborhood level.

Can these pulses be directed? Because if you can make a homemade one large enough and can focus the pulse it in a single direction, some neighborhoods would probably love to have one to knock out cars that regularly speed through their neighborhoods...

If you live in the country then just make this about 20x bigger and bury it under the road. If you put a speed camera about a mile before the trap you should have enough time to charge your 3 or 4 farad cap bank. A motion trigger that has a small amount of computer smarts can figure out if its the right car and nuke it. Lots of evidence but if you live in the kind of place that you can get away with digging up your road then you should be able to handle a freshly stranded douchebag creatively.

Why would you have to bury it?

To ensure it's under the car when it goes off. The other option would be to build one of those roadside wooden Jesus signs and mount it on the back.

I would think that red light cameras would be a popular target. Same would apply to a directed magnetron tube, though that could potentially cook your brain.

As someone that accidentally spilled a vial of acid on his hands two days ago and, oddly enough, happens to have all of this shiat lying around my house, I thank you Submitter.  Can I preempt my my own Darwin on this?  Good looking out with the volt meter.  Saftey in a second. :)

Oh, and still going strong so if anyone has anything else intersting, feel free.

If only there were some common piece of technology that is in almost every house that had a magnetron.

/never take apart your microwave
//unless you really know what you are doing
///or want to see sparks when you attach it to a car battery

Is there a way to temporarily knock out a cellphone? Those people on train who are yakking away during my ride home snooze really grind my gears.

Pretty cheap solution.

Just need to get one of these close enough to my neighbors stereo system so I don't have to listen to his Tejano music all the time.

That's cute. I used to work with this circuit's big brother:
i.imgur.com

Inside it's got shelves of high-voltage capacitors about the size of soup cans which charge to around 800V. It creates a strong magnetic field pulse in an external coil in order to magnetize rare-earth magnets after they have been assembled into a product (such as a speaker).

This reads like the nerdier form of "Here...hold my beer and watch this!"

I've always thought that this would be a great way to get to someone who has a bulletproof/bombproof car. I pictured putting one on an RC car and driving it underneath a certain Person's(Said person will remain nameless, he thinks people are out to get him who aren't even idly talking about it) car, and setting off the EMP while he is waiting to get on the freeway or something. Windows stuck up, car dead, etc... Too bad they got smart with car locks and only had a year or so where there wasn't some kind of manual release, you could lock said person in their car and sell tickets.

Yeah, my buddy's pro-stereo setup in his truck had 2 or caps the size of friggin' soda cans.

Finally, a practical application for science AND religion!

Hmm, I may have to try scaling that up a bit. I'm sure we've got some old equipment in our garage at work with caps about the size of a coffee cup and I know I can get a hold of an SPST switch and a momentary switch. I'm betting a 4 wheeler or motorcycle battery would be good for charging it...

Now to figure out how much wire I'll need.

I don't think earplugs would make a very good garrote, but I guess that suggestion could work as well.
