Um...that is one of the definitions.

Not saying it's OK to use it that way, but it is one of the definitions nonetheless.

But, Tim Cook was named the "most powerful gay man in the world." Surely that carries the power to change the meanings of slang words.

Triumph: But, Tim Cook was named the "most powerful gay man in the world." Surely that carries the power to change the meanings of slang words.

It does (and don't call me Shirley), but changing the current meaning (or future meaning, if we're not there yet) does not affect how a word was meant to be used in the past, and so I'd say it is perfectly fine for a dictionary to point out those alternative meanings, even if they are offensive or out of date. Giving a certain definition of a word is not the same as advocating it's use in that manner.

Perhaps the definition in Apple's (or any other) dictionary could clarify that such use of the word is offensive (rather than simply "informal") to many, but otherwise they shouldn't remove the definition, IMHO.

Also, the girl says no other dictionaries that she checked included the derogatory definition. Yeah, I guess the Oxford Dictionaries are rather obscure. :-/

as is dictionary.com

The girl has found that dictionaries often document slang.  Might as well shoot the messenger.

dictionaries? defining words' meanings as they are in common usage?!??

hate crime!!!1

I think the main problem with our language is that we don't have a definite, non-perjorative term for 'homosexual male'. We have 'lesbian' which clearly means 'homosexual woman', but we don't have any corresponding word for men other than 'gay', which is unfortunately not definite in terms of gender.

Something like that could clear up this whole thing.

2013-11-13 01:22:04 AM
If they can put in one usage of "literally" as "figuratively", they can put in the non-PC version for "gay".

Pretty sure homosexual is the male equivalent of lesbian, with homo meaning man. But i could be wrong.

This.

I don't see a problem with this at all.

It's how the word is used, it belongs in the dictionary.

You want to say it's politically incorrect?  You want to say it's offensive?  Okay, do that.  However, that doesn't change that it's a meaning of the word in everyday speech and should be documented as such.

Both of these dictionaries indicate that usage can be offensive.  Apple's does not.

So - we have reached the point of political correctness where it is now considered bad to document reality in a reference book... and everyone cheers.

Just wait till she does an assignment on WW2 and learns about The Holocaust. "How dare SAGE allow someone to write about ethnic cleansing! How offensive!"

Which, as I sort of indicated, is pretty much the only thing Apple should change about their definition. :)

In that usage, "homo" means "same", not "man". Someone who is homosexual as opposed to heterosexual ("hetero" meaning "different").

"Homo" means "same" not "male".

Still, your point may hold. It is an idea at least.

Yup, you're wrong. The homo in homosexual means "same", not "man". Going by your definition, all straight women are homosexual since they like having sex with men.

It also says "often offensive" next to the definition. Now, when I was 15 in high school . . . the things teachers would say about gay people were very offensive. She's kind of lucky in a way there is less to complain about.

I think the 90s in the South was a weird time to identify as gay for a young person. I have to imagine that in many years prior, no one would have talked about being gay. But by the 90s, for as small of a part of the population as people claimed gays were, everyone was talking about being gay, mostly to condemn it. I went to a chess club after school in 6th grade, and I swear it was like being gay was all anyone could talk about. And they would debate about it. Some people like me defended homosexuality. It was such a weird time. And my teachers used their classes as soap boxes to talk about being gay. Some choice quotes:

6th grade gym coach/sex ed: "President Clin-tawn (he had weird speech) says two men marrying each other is OK" (he said this very dismissively and made a weird face. . . was also psychic as I can't remember that clinton or anyone else at the time was talking about gay marriage)

9th grade geography teacher: "I don't mind gay people as long  as they're not gay in front of me."
Me after class: "What did you mean by not gay in front of you?"
Teacher: "You know if they're kissing and stuff . . . yuck!" (made cringing face)

(This was back in the days where people used the phrase "being gay together" to indicate two men or two women were doing something sexual with each other, or just holding hands)

9th grade gym coach/sex ed teacher in response to student who said only gays can get AIDS, "We don't know that for sure."

10th grade AP history teacher: "I just read that Rosie O'Donnell is a lesbian, and I will NOT have that show on in my house anymore." (It was previously a running joke how she would run out of school at the end of the day to get home to watch it in time.)
And during another discussion of her TV-viewing habits: "I don't care if it's funny. I cannot get past the gay thing." (when instructing on us why she could not bring herself to watch Will and Grace)

Did not do well on that AP exam . . .

Also, what's up with girls creating ruckus lately because they think something is offensive?

There's the girl in Sweden who thinks "skin" color is racist because it implies people of different color have no skin (Whoa, that escalated quickly).

Then there's this girl who thinks a dictionary is a moral compass and not a repository of word usage.

In both cases it's the snowflake syndrome mixed with politically correct trends. I blame the parents who didn't advise the girls with common sense and in fact encouraged them to "pursue their dreams" or some bullshiat.

The only thing this serves for is to create a false sense of accomplishment. Yay, we're eradicating bigotry!! Nope. These gestures are as empty as they come.

In modern parlance, "gay" has two meanings: 1) homosexual, and 2) stupid or lame.

Neither of these uses are homophobic.

Hey, sweetie.

Dictionaries tell you what words are used to mean.  You don't get to re-write the dictionary just because you don't like the way a word is used.

And if you couldn't find a dictionary that had that extra meaning, you found some dictionaries that need some help, because, like it or not, that's how people use that word.

well, if you give them enough beer, then many of them do actually become homosexual.

(i heard about a roller derby team where someone wanted to name themselves "three beer queer", and most of the team protested, saying it described all of them, so she shouldn't be allowed to use the name .. i chuckled.)

Please remember, dictionaries don't define words, they give usages. It is scientists and philosophers who define words(in this case it's the general public, actually).

Done in one.

A dictionary isn't supposed to be about someone's subjective definition of "cool". A dictionary represents the way words are actually used, insensitive or no. And the fact is that the word is used that way.
