George Babbitt: Paris1127: Richard C Stanford: Hey, I remember some comic from the 80s call "Homosexuality: Legitiment, Alternative Deathstyle". I kid you not, the cover had a bunch of zombies destroying D.C. It was pretty much an even more snark baiting chick tract that featured Andy Dick, the old guy from Up, and Ward Cleaver giving a... disturbingly detailed account of the horrors that await if we tolerate the gay. "Gay people touch food! Oh yuck!"
I'm just saying, it was published by a homophobe in the pre-Internet days, yet it goes into graphic sexual details, where gays congregate. I'm a little suspicious.

I'm super happy for some folks I left behind there and a little sad for the ones who didn't live to see it.
CSB-
When we first moved to Oahu the wife and I went for a drive up the windward side to check out the beaches. At one park some locals were hanging out fishing and drinking beer. We started talking and they said to be careful if we went to the next beach up the coast because lots of mahus hung out there. I had been warned about Samoans, Filipinos, Tongans and all kinds of other folks so I didn't worry about it. The next day at work I asked one of the aunties what island mahus were from and she said 'Key West!' When everyone stopped laughing she explained that mahu is Hawaiian Pidgin for 'gay'.

Cerebral Knievel: Here in Virginia, at least in Richmond, captital city, capital of the confederacy and all that, the city gubment is passing legislation to recognize same sex partners for city workers. not that they can do anything about it on account of state wide legeslation, but because the city leaders see the writing on the wall and want to have the language in place for when the state does... turn... as it were.

so.. if folks in capital city can smell something on the wind here in Virginia.. that is a good sign...

One must remember.. Richmond VA, like a lot of other really old southern cities,  have a reallyreallyreally big Gay population. and our major urban centers in NorVa and Hampton Rhodes/VABEAtch, are keeping a lot of the southwestern Bigots at bay. I point to our recent gubernatorial elections as evidence of that trend.

Oh, I'm sure they'll pass something sooner rather than later but purple states are still at the mercy of the GOP, so even if they don't hold out as long as true red states like Texas it'll still be a while yet. After all, as bad a democrat as the new Virginia governor is, Ken Cuccinelli still got 45 percent of the vote despite being anti-gay/anti-blowjobs, wanted to bring back sodomy laws, etc. So yes, I agree that its only a matter of when rather then if VA joins the ranks and possibly in the next few years. Meanwhile, Texas maybe not until 2020 if the Feds don't tell them otherwise.

FTFA:
Republican state Rep. Bob McDermott said in a letter to Abercrombie on Friday he will file a request for a temporary restraining order if the bill passes, the Honolulu Star Advertiser reported Tuesday. A state judge has said he will hear the case if the bill passes.

On what basis could they possibly challenge this?

The Hawaiian constitution specifically gives the legislature the right to pass a law banning gay marriage.

FTFHC
"The legislature shall have the power to reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples."

If they have the power to do that, then clearly they have the power not to do so.

And because of prior cases, they don't need to specifically allow for gay marriage as long as they don't specifically ban it (per that constitutional amendment) they have no choice but to accept them (as it was found to be against the Hawaiian Constitution prior to the above amendment, which doesn't ban gay marriage but merely allows the legislature to do so).

Phil the SWO: But good for you, HI! You started this back in the 90s. It's good to see you finally finish it.

www.learnthailanguage.org

In particular, 20 years ago (seriously, holy fark, 20 freakin' years?!) in 1993, Baehr v. Miike was decided by the Hawaii Supreme Court, holding that the state's refusal to grant gay couples marriage licenses was discriminatory. This led directly to DoMA in 1996 and a constitutional amendment in Hawaii in 1998 and dozens of other state constitutional amendments and laws banning gay marriage.  A dark time, until Massachusetts legalized gay marriage in 2003, 10 years later.
Hawaii has now come back to the fold, and I'm glad to see it. And look on the bright side, guys - you're still in the top third.

Yada, yada, will of the people who voted for the amendment, etc., etc. It doesn't need to be a winning argument, just one that convinces a conservative judge that he won't immediately be reversed if he says "yes, I need to at least stay this temporarily while we hold a trial to hear more about arguments, with plenty of time for discovery and expert opinions."

It's like the old saying - you can sue  anyone... the question is whether you'll survive even summary judgement.

I think that HI will be among the winners in the eyes of history not because they were one of the first two end marriage inequality, but because they weren't FORCED to do it by SCOTUS. I have a feeling that 20, MAYBE 25 will be in that club.

Well, hell.

Here is the Hawaii Legislature's records page for this bill.

http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/measure_indivSS.aspx?billtype=SB&billn um ber=1&year=2013b

The log of people who mailed or emailed commentary on this issue is the right sidebar, complete with scans of their comments.

I dare you to read it ALL.

Every single piece of testimony, both expert and from the wildcard line.

And that doesn't even cover transcriptions of verbal testimony given between 10/31 and 11/5...of which over five thousand people signed up to speak.  I'm still looking for those, bet those must be an absolute riot.  Especially if the reporter included physical descriptions of the speakers.  (Pro-SSM supporters were often seen wearing rainbow lei.  Anti...were generally seen wearing shirts with some kind of church slogan.)

Why should straight men be the only ones taken for half their shiat when their cheating wives (same sex partners for butt-pirates / carpet-munchers) file for divorce.

That's because there is this disparaging perception that all persons with an ethnicity other than Caucasian Indo-European are supposed to be more enlightened to the progressive cause.

Sudo_Make_Me_A_Sandwich: Who is harmed by this?

This is my understanding of the logic: All men are actually gay; they only put up with women because society frowns on man-man lovin'. If it ever becomes socially acceptable, then society will collapse as men abandon women entirely, leaving nobody to create children.

It's a reasonable thing to think if you're a gay man growing up in a conservative area; since you and every other gay man you might know are closeted, maybe everyone is closeted - maybe the men you know who appear to like the ladies are just doing a better job of closeting than you.

I come from a "savage" country myself, so I really don't need any lectures any lectures about the range of opinions that can be held by nonwhite people. I was just making a joke about what I thought was a cool-sounding name.

Some of you just need to relax and not try and turn every little thing into a teaching moment.
