There's a Michigan sports blog I visit that has something called the Borges-O-Meter that measures fan satisfaction with Al Borges. After the Michigan State game it snapped in half. After the Nebraska game the 1-10 scale was replaced with a -1--10 scale. It is currently reading a solid -10.

Ugh. Went to the Nebraska game, and it was horrible. Every week, the offense gets worse.

Let's start:

Gardner... he's afraid to throw the ball. We won games with him throwing INTs, we lose games where he hangs on to the ball. He's gunshy. He's holding on to the ball too long, second guessing the receivers (who just need to be allowed to do their jobs), once they pursue him, they WILL get the sack, because the ball isn't going to get tossed, pitches, thrown - he'll hag on to it going down.

The Offensive Line... Taylor Lewan, some leader... sit him for a week. I've seen him get punked by guys younger, and even smaller. WTF? He's supposed to be a captain, yet the offensive line gets worse by the week. Part of his job is to motivate them to get their conditioning done, at the frat house, if need be. Gardner isn't oing them any favors, staying too long in the pocket, but the O-line should at least be able to give him another second or two.

The plays... Geeze, Borges... I saw about 3 different formations, and one absolutely horrible formation (not a receiver in sight, and easy defensive play for Nebraska who was pushing around our line all day). He kept trying the same plays, that ween't working, time and time again. "The definition of insanity..." - no, Michigan never got a "different result" no matter how many times they ran into the brick wall. I'm also sick of telegraphing the run as badly as they do... I'm surprised Gardner isn't told to jump up and down yelling "Fitz has the ball!!" and wave a flag with Toussaint's number on it for the opposing team. No subtlety, no subterfuge. Way too easy for defenses to read.

Toussaint... I've become convinced he has absolutely no "hole awareness" - his north-south runs ran right into his own line (unable to open any holes and getting pushed around), and worse, he was dropping too many passes in the one role he could have been useful in.

No reverses... though there were more than a few occasions they could have made Nebraska pay with a simple play to catch Nebraska over-pursuing.

The only bright side was the defense actually made adjustments and were no longer getting burned for gimme short-yard plays in the second half as bad as the first. They were the only thing that kept Michigan in that game (and everybody in the stadium until the last 30 seconds of the game).

It's a lost season. Brady Hoke needs to make some tough decisions and lay some blame at the feet of his offensive coordinator, the QB and the team captains.

Sit Gardner, he's no longer effective (he's a headcase, he needs to get it sorted... at least make him a WR or use him in special plays). Punish Lewan (is he distracted? WTF is going on there??). Replace Borges or take charge, coach, and show him how it is done.

The problems on the offensive and defensive lines are shocking... Brady Hoke was supposed to be "the guy" who would turn our linemen into solid walls that would win the battles at the line of scrimmage. Instead, they seem to be getting worse as time goes on.

I just don't know.

So this year we're going to ruin OSU's year by being so bad that just by playing Michigan OSU's perfect season won't be taken seriously by BCS voters? Somehow that doesn't seem like any sort of solace for the debacle that our offense has become.

Seriously Borges... I could tell what plays were coming. I could tell when it was going to be a run between the tackles by Fitz. I could tell when it was going to be a long passing route. The only thing that kept me from getting stupidly drunk during the game was that my wife and daughter came home earlier than expected, so I had to put the hard stuff away and stop swearing. I spent the second quarter yelling at the TV, saying things like "Don't run up the middle, Fitz can't make holes and neither can your O-Li - oh look, another tackle for a loss. Okay, don't run a long passing route to Funchess, Gardner isn't getting enough time t- oh, another sack. DAMMIT BORGES!"

Not predictable? Growing pains? Borges needs to be fired. He's actively hurting his team right now; he's putting his offense in a position where they are going to fail every time, which makes everyone on the offense look bad. This hurts their chances of moving on to the next level, and has probably cost Lewan at least 10 spots in the draft. (To be fair, Lewan has cost himself another 5+ spots in the draft, and at this point I would be disappointed but not surprised if he dropped out of the first round altogether.) Fitz Toussant is NOT a "between the Tackles" kind of runner - he's an outside runner.Get him into open space and let him run. But he can't make holes or drive through the tackles of your average NCAA defensive lineman. Ironically, Fitz might do better in an NFL-style offense than this insanity that Michigan is trying to throw out there, but he's not likely to get that chance thanks to Borges.

Gardner isn't a great QB, so you have to play to his strengths - which is short passes with a quick release, read-option plays and screens. None of which Michigan uses these days. Gardner is not good when he has to drop back and throw in the face of pressure. That's all Borges is doing with him (with a few rare exceptions... including their only drive that ended in a TD in the past two games?!?) and all it's doing is showcasing his weaknesses to the world. Gardner is a good QB, but he looks like he's a True Freshman who is also a Walk On in this Offense in the past two games. Thanks to Borges.

The O-Line is young and inexperience up the middle. You need to give them a chance to succeed to build confidence; when you are losing yards on every play, you lose confidence in your ability to play the position. You second guess yourself, you think when you should be acting on instinct, you plan when you should be reacting to the play, and when things don't follow the plan you've made you can't react in time to make up for the mistake. That's the O-Line these past two games. So what you do is you give them little successes - a trick play that gets 2 yards instead of losing yards. A screen which goes for no gain. A short outside passing route where all they have to do is block their man for 2 seconds instead of 5. These things don't win games by themselves, but they do build confidence. Borges isn't doing that for his O-Line, and their confidence is gone. That's all on Borges.

It would have been better if Hoke kept Borges from the media, if he told him to not answer questions on the record at all until things turned around. Then, once things were turned around (assuming they were turned around, that is...) let Borges talk about the "Growing pains" of these games, and talk about how proud he is of the way his boys bounced back from a couple of bad games and how much better they've gotten since then. This interview? It sounds like he's tossing the kids under the bus. He's saying "We've got a good scheme, the kids just can't play it yet. It hasn't "taken" yet in them, but when it does, watch out!".

Fire Borges. Maybe at the end of the season, maybe let him resign on his own so it looks like he's falling on his own sword, but the longer Borges tries to run this offense in a way that is so blindingly failing, he's actively harming his players futures in football. And that is something that no program can allow.

The spin I like the most is the UM is being as bad as possible to screw OSU out of a chance at a national title shot. As a Nebraska fan, I'm glad the Huskers could do their part by ending the home win streak before Brutus & Co. had a chance.

Seriously though, how do you manage negative rushing against a blackshirts-stripped defense that regularly gives up over 200 yds rushing per game?

A quarterback whose response to pressure up the middle is always "Fark, I guess I should run directly backwards from the line of scrimmage" is certainly a contributing factor.

Not to mention that every running play is "Between the Tackles", even if there isn't a hole between the tackles to run through. It didn't work the first 6 times... the 7th is going to work, I know it! The 9th is going to work, I know it! The 15th is going to work, I know it! Etc.

Youll beat northwestern, dont worry.

/unless we get back half of the starters out with injury during thus bye week, then we might have a chance, but defenses are figuring out cain colter and semian is really stinking it up, so it still is likely youll pull something out. Also, our offensive coordinator does not adjust at halftime as part of his contractual obligations so that we can give opposing teams fantastic second half comebacks to make their trips home on i94 a bit more enjoyable. So as long as your defense comes out with a decent pkan after 30 minutes, youll do fine.

LesserEvil: Let's start:

Yes, let's.

Gardner... he's afraid to throw the ball.

The problem is that the receivers are running slow-developing routes but the O-line is letting through free hitters before they break open. He's holding the ball because the receivers aren't open. When they DO get open, he's eating turf. He's been playing shell-shocked the last two games but after getting sacked FOURTEEN TIMES I'm not going to blame him for the offense's woes. When given time to throw, he's deadly.

The Offensive Line... Taylor Lewan, some leader... sit him for a week. I've seen him get punked by guys younger, and even smaller. WTF? He's supposed to be a captain, yet the offensive line gets worse by the week. Part of his job is to motivate them to get their conditioning done

Lewan is basically an NFL player forced to play with high schoolers. At first he was passing off complex combo blocking assignments but now he's doing simple slide protections the guards still can't execute. His experience means bupkus because O-line experience means better teamwork and here there's none to be had. At most he's got some one-on-one technique but most of the pass rush has come from the interior collapsing. What's a guy to do?

Less formations, especially when the O-line is young, is not necessarily a bad thing. You want to run multiple plays from the same look to avoid giving the defense easy keys. The problem is that Borges really only runs one play from one formation. He could have fifty formations and the defense would still beat him just by watching the alignment.

Toussaint... I've become convinced he has absolutely no "hole awareness" - his north-south runs ran right into his own line (unable to open any holes and getting pushed around), and worse, he was dropping too many passes in the one role he could have been useful in.

The holes haven't been there. Toussaint has the same problem as Gardner; he can't do his RB things because the O-line always lets in a free hitter. When it's something as obvious as tackle over the defense lines up more guys than the O-line can account for. Other times at least one guy completely whiffs a block, if not two. Kind of hard to get a head of steam going when someone's got you wrapped up two yards in the backfield.

No reverses... though there were more than a few occasions they could have made Nebraska pay with a simple play to catch Nebraska over-pursuing.

Reverses are not a silver bullet. They're also slow-developing plays and the problem with the O-line is that it can't block long enough to execute any misdirection plays at all. The O-line can't even pick up a vanilla double A-gap blitz, and two free hitters means both guys running the reverse are dead meat. If you don't fumble, the best result is a ten-yard loss. Any other brilliant plans, Les Saban McEinstein?

When O-lines are this bad, though, teams will compensate by running more constraint plays, short passing game stuff like quick outs and bubble screens. The spread offense was basically innovated as an equalizer for teams that couldn't recruit the five-star prospects. Here is where Borges is stubborn. The recipe for short-term success would be to run spread plays out of the shotgun, but it seems they're looking long term where they'd rather run plays they're not good at until they get good at it, but in doing so they were willing to put this season at risk. Now they're under fire, but it's WAY too late to re-write the playbook without doing more damage. So they're making quick fixes like max pro and slide protections because they didn't think they'd be historically bad. Honestly Michigan fans are more patient than they're given credit for, but one thing they don't like is setting records for futility. I think they bet that the offense would struggle, probably lose to defenses like MSU, but show a good fight. When teams like Akron, PSU and Nebraska bullied the line, I can't say the panic was unjustified.

Huh? rga184: I do wonder if you guys are rethinking firing the coach that took you to a natl championship because he had the nerve to have a nine or ten win season or for losing to appalachian state.

Lloyd retired. He had to be convinced to come back for that last season where they lost to Appy State. He came back in part because the Long/Henne/Hart trio decided they wanted to stay for their senior season.

Coming from a Perles-era Spartan fan, you have a predictable offense.

/wolverine tears are almost as sweet as republican ones.

And speaking of Michigan State... did you see the basketball game last night?

I've never understood why Michiganders are so freaking obese. (It ain't the beer, either - teetotallers are lardasses there too.) Michigan food is some of the blandest & most boring I've ever eaten. My 3 years there were the skinniest of my life.

Depends where you lived.

I lived near Detroit for a few years and lived off of a healthy diet of Jimmy Johns, pancheros, hungry howies, Mexican village and layette Coney Island.

Or you could be up north eating racoon.

/Jk... I love up north.

Hey screw you pal!

We have a high % of residents with "Southern" in their DNA who arrived here in the 40s. They brought their lard-arsed ways with them.

StreetlightInTheGhetto: StreetlightInTheGhetto: bangmaid: I thought this was going to be about how they claim their president wasn't hammered giving a speech at the last game.

Sorry I can't link it but holy hell...

I haven't listened to/watched it yet, but read the blurb on Ann Arbor News at work. My dad was at the game but since Football or Marching Band wasn't happening, he wasn't in his seat.

/*not* a fan of Coleman
//... gonna go watch that now

HOLY CRAP.

Yeah, the "she wasn't used to that mic" excuse was BS. I can see how not being familiar with a certain mic/speaker setup could distort your voice and maybe even make it seem a bit slurring, but I don't think that could... draw... out... words... like... that...

Actually, it's a very common problem in stadiums on mics. Reverb and returning sound makes it very hard to keep pace when talking. You slow down your speech unconsciously to let the echo catch up. Your voice starts catching and you sound like a drunk yodeler who can't keep pace. You can find dozens of examples just like this online that sound exactly alike. They're not drunk.
