Mission accomplished...oh wait.

Why, just in fark comments about another article, I learned there are a bunch of people who had no idea that Vaseline (or oil based lubes) degrade condoms, and make them ineffective.

I recall learning this a long long time ago.

Huzzah for abstinence only sex ed!

I grew up in the 80's and 90's, and the constant bombardment of "YOU WILL DIE IF YOU DON'T USE A CONDOM" kind of stuck with me.  Maybe they should go back to that, even if it's not as true as it was.

Yeah, mission accomplished. More pregnancies and STDs are the end goal of such policies. Can't have a few grams of latex thrawting God's ability to punish teenagers for being teenagers.

The problem might be that teenagers that quit wearing condoms are telling other teens how much more awesome it is without a condom. Riskier, but more awesome.

2013-11-12 01:40:13 PM
Who cares, just tell teenagers to abstain.  Teenagers always listen when adults tell them what they can't do.

The thing that I've never understood about those who traditionally oppose sex-ed in schools is the fact that they allow the schools to teach almost everything a child needs to navigate this world...except sex.

You allow your kid's school to teach them math, science, basic home ec, cooking, how to balance a checkbook, how to work well with others, collaborative group projects, conflict resolution, interpersonal communication development, basic first aid, etc. etc. etc....

Yet there is this huge developmental gap in human sexuality and reproduction.  If we want to take the mega-religious view on the world, that's fine...but at the end of the day, God made us to be sexual creatures...and no where in the Bible does it specify that sex is only for procreation.

It's all very strange to me...

If you take a "mega-religious" Christian view of the world, the beef is not with having sex, the beef is with having sex outside of marriage.

Santorum had a beef with non-procreative sex, and then only in wedlock. "Mega-religious" christians are against sex, period. If they aren't, why are their representatives against sex?

I know.  Butttt...what I am talking about is their avoidance of even discussing aspects of human sexuality and reproduction.  Like it or not, sexuality and intimacy are absolutely crucial for a healthy marriage, and leaving that out of discussion when it comes to teaching the birds and the bees is mind boggling to me.

Even though I grew up with pretty conservative, Republican parents...how the human body functions, including sexuality and reproduction were not taboo topics.  I knew where babies came from, and how they were made at a pretty early age.

Rick Santorum was the Senator from Pennsylvania.  He represented Pennsylvania.  Do you think all Pennsylvanians are against sex?  Or perhaps are you making a logical mistake here?

That is the part no one seems to grasp.  It's nor a right vs left or religious vs atheist issue it's a stupid vs not stupid issue.

The right wing have simply made being stupid a virtue so their stupid people are more vocal where as leftist idiots just run crappy conspiracy theory websites with white text on black backgrounds.

What if you wait until you buy a house, and pay to have the water tested in that house, and never move out of that house for the rest of your life?  And, just to be sure that the water isn't getting contaminated in your house's pipes, get it retested every few years (and, if it fails a test, move out and never take a shower again)?

My (24 year old) UPS guy still believes that. He said he'd gone without a condom "a few times" and that pull-out HAS to work or otherwise he'd have kids by now. I'm fairly certain he doesn't know about ovulation and crap like that either.

Thank God I'm not after him for his brains.

You think they would be happy that the teen pregnancy rate is going down, but nope lets just make it shoot back up.

2013-11-12 03:05:17 PM
The problem is as a culture we instil the notion unto our teenagers that sex is shameful and a sin and you are a bad person if you don't have sex in the missionary position within the context of a heterosexual marriage for the sole purpose of procreation. By refusing to teach them the dark and dirty secrets of sex we further infer a sense of shame about the act.

So we scare our teenagers away from this supposed shameful sin and that works.

For a while.

Instinct beats reason every time. There's just no getting around basic biology. Our teen years are when we have our greatest instinct to fark. And eventually, no matter how much shame you make a teenager feel about their sexuality, if the opportunity to fark arises they're gonna fark. Teenagers have been farking since the dawn of time and when our sun exhausts its supply of hydrogen and goes off main sequence to become a huge helium fusing red ball of death you can be sure there will be teenagers farking as our planet burns.

Given that teenagers ARE going to fark no matter how shameful you make them feel about it, it makes no sense what-so-ever to not give them the knowledge to fark safely.

By making them feel shame over one of the most natural acts we can perform as human beings we not only keep them in ignorance about the act, but we make them too ashamed to take the responsibility to engage in the act safely.

There should be no more shame over going into a pharmacy to buy a box of condoms than there should be over going in to buy a box of cough drops.

Yes, it is easy to make fun of.  But do you remember when AIDs first came onto the scene?  That was the mentality.  I also wonder if:
1)  The STI landscape of whats currently circulating and at what rates is any better today than it was back then
2)  If Question 1 is "yes" then is there a causal relationship between the public freaking out about the possible risks of unprotected sex and the improvement of the public health landscape in that arena.
