hardinparamedic: kvinesknows: Why do we care what other countries or other people donate to a relief effort?

You dont donate because its a requirement. You donate because its something you feel you want to help with and its really none of your business who donates less or more.

Because China is more than capable of doing a lot more, to be quite frank with you.

And let their own people starve?  fark that

China is too busy building cities that no one can afford to live in so they can prop up their GDP numbers. They ain't got time to write checks for the Philipines.

There are hungry people in the US, but we are still quite active with international aid.

You don't care if wealthier nations help impoverished nations after a huge natural disaster? It would be okay with you if no nation contributed anything, because "it's none of your business"?

I'll be honest, I don't understand this attitude at all.

Well, they were up until 1970 when they 'abandoned' their claim in the name of supporting their puppet ally dependent state.

According to whom? To you? Are you in the heads of Chinese leaders? Do you think for them? Do you have information about the state of affairs in their nation that they do not?

I don't think so. More likely, I think, is that you are merely condemning China for acting in ways you disagree with: ways that you think make them less capable than, according to you, they "should" be.

H31N0US: Filipinos and Indonesians comprise and inordinate percentage of the commercial kitchen and domestic sanitation labor force in Hong Kong. Both are populous countries dominated by dogmatic religions. Coincidence, perhaps.

Filipinos also make up a surprisingly large portion of illegal labor in Thailand (Burmese are larger).  Seems odd that in a country with basically no labor laws an a $150/mo minimum wage that there would be a market for imported "cheap" labor, but there you go.

not be a citizen of China, its none of my business if they help out other countries.

Being a Citizen of Canada, and more specifically of Manitoba.. I am a little ticked that my country is not doing enough.  I supplement that by doing even more ( like volunteering at a fundraising event for this disaster )

You're right -- the planet's second largest economy really only spare about $100,000 for aid.  That makes sense.

In politics, donating is a strategic move that can be used to show how powerful your nation is. It can also be used as a way of gaining leverage over certain issues that you may have with another country. The bad thing is that if you're engaged with some problems with a country and that country suffers a horrible disaster (like China VS Philippines), you'll be forced to donate "something" to them so as to not appear like the "lesser country" in the eyes of the world. I bet if nobody gave international attention to this typhoon, China wouldn't send stuff.

Do you know how a lot of Chinese people view those from the Philippines? They view them as lower class uneducated filthy maids. There was also a hostage event in the Philippines some time ago where the local SWAT guys were so dumb, they didn't kill the hostage taker when he went out of a bus and talked with them. The result was that the hostage taker killed the Chinese tourists. The Chinese want an official apology for this tragedy, yet the Philippines won't give it to them. Then there's also that Spratley or whatever island that they're fighting over.

Oh, I love that myth. It's always awesome to expose the bigots. Especially the fact that according to the Talmud and the Koran, forcing a person to come in contact with, or to consume an unclean animal does nothing to their souls. They have to knowingly, willingly, and without duress consume or come in contact with it.

Millennium: I don't think so. More likely, I think, is that you are merely condemning China for acting in ways you disagree with: ways that you think make them less capable than, according to you, they "should" be.

Yeah, because THAT'S the only reason to criticize the Chinese. Not their use of borderline slave labor. Not their abhorrent treatment of rural peoples, their corruption which makes Washington look like saints, their execution of political dissidents and sale of organs and bodies on the black market, or any other scandal in recent years.

No. It's because they're not capable of providing more than a hundred large in aid, despite being one of the most prosperous and growing industrial and technological economies in the world.
