When carriages were the primary mode of transport (after feet) people would be injured or even killed in accidents all the time.

HAHA! My wife and I had a similar experience in Tombstone. It was funny because when the horses started acting up on the stagecoach we were on the driver couldnt turn the PA off and started cussing and yelling at the horses. He apologized for the profanity but it was still a bit scary
