The author didn't.  She just missed her tdap (or dtap, I can't remember which) booster, which, as she points out, was never an issue until a horde of kids stopped getting the primary vaccine in childhood.

I live in California, and they just announced last week that we have a possible case of mumps. MUMPS. In an elementary school in 2013.

My daughter is current on her immunizations, so if this possible case turns into a confirmed one, I can only hope that her MMR shot does its job. I'm wondering, though, if the school will send home a notice advising all of the parents to get MMR booster shots. It's possible that our children can carry the virus without developing the illness, and put us all at risk in the interim.

If you are a parent that wants to go against the grain on every social issue--no vaccines, no candy on Halloween, no sweet treats for birthdays or holidays at school, hemp clothing, no recognition of traditional holidays, only free-range vegetables and organic water--then please just keep your kids at home, knit yourselves into a yurt and let the rest of us march on in a civilized way.

I will say that I'm against the mandatory flu vaccine. I've never had the flu in my life but my company made the vaccine mandatory so I took it and it made me sick as a dog. But that's different than the standard vaccines all kids should get.

I'm glad I got all my vaccinations since I work on occasion with those who come from, or go back to visit third world shiat holes where horrible diseases are just as ubiquitous as traffic lights here.

I sound xenophobic.

Anyway, enjoy your polio and stuff, antivaxers.

I caught pertussis on my way to Iraq in 2006. On the plus side, coughing until you puke really dampens the appetite, and I was trying to lose weight. Lost 32 pounds in four months, to get back to a healthy weight from extreme fatass. I had injured my back before the coughing started, so one of my symptoms was collapsing to one knee when I had a coughing fit. Waking up in the middle of the night unable to breathe was lots of fun, too. Never peed myself, fortunately, but I think that's more of a girl thing.

/If someone tells you they won't get their kid vaccinated against whooping cough, punch them as hard as you can.

Exact opposite here. The year that I didn't get the flu shot was the year I got the flu and spent four solid days in bed, too weak to move and too painful to even try. I don't recall EVER being that sick.

Got the flu shot last week (free vaccines at work, y'all!) and aside from a little soreness at the injection site, all is well.

I had a mild case of the whooping cough back in 1989.  It wasn't the severe 'whoop', but it was very unpleasant and lasted for 5 months.  My whole family got it.  Yet, somehow, I don't blame Jenny McCarthy for that.  Unlike the article's author, I do not dismiss Miss McCarthy for being a former playmate.  I'm sure more than a few former playmates have been scientists and quite intelligent despite being masturbation fodder.  No, I simply dismiss Miss McCarthy for clinging to a position long after it has been thoroughly debunked.

They thought my son might of had it a couple of years ago (yes, he was vaccinated)  to test if you have it, they shove a sponge up your nose....Not fun

2013-11-11 04:34:00 PM
I agree with the author 100%, but she should have kept her own vaccinations up to date. Doesn't seem fair to berate others for not being vaccinated, when her own lack of vaccinations did result in her passing the disease to others, just as was done to her. She mentions the 95% vaccination rate required for herd immunity, so.....yeah, be part of the 95%, not the 5%.

My vaccs are probably due for renewals in the next few years, so this gives me something to think about.

My mom had pertussis as a child and she STILL talks about how awful it was. She said there were many, many times where she thought she was going to die because she just couldn't breathe. All it takes is one story like that for my children to understand the necessity for getting a needle jabbed into their bodies.

And my grandmother had polio. And my brother had rubella. If there was a Wheel of Fortune for families with the most infectious diseases, we'd totally win.

Every adult!  This woman got it because she didn't get her booster shot.  Furthermore, while she had her "mild, flu-like symptoms" she was infectious spreading friggin' WHOOPING COUGH to every one she met.

Until very recently, adults didn't need to be vaccinated unless they were traveling to an area where the disease was prevalent. We all get vaccinated as children, which was good enough for herd immunity until people got all weird about vaccines.

I'm up-to-date on my DTaP, but need to get the MMR booster.  I need to have them in a medical setting (i.e. not Target Pharmacy), because I have a problem with needles and other sharp objects puncturing my skin.

Doesn't matter if it's blood being drawn, a vaccination, or stepping on a nail, or having a large staple go through my finger.  I tend to pass out if I do not properly distract myself.  I start to sweat, my BP drops, and boom, I'm out.

Stupid phobias.  Just thinking about it makes me start to get nauseous and woozy.

I've traveled the world and am on a first name basis with the doc at the travel clinic. Stock up ya'll.

Woah... your company made flu shots MANDATORY?   Where the hell do you work, and how do they expect to enforce that kind of nonsense?

I'd be inclined to talk to a lawyer about that one.  I'm pretty damn sure they company can't legally force you to do anything what so ever related to your medical health, or lack-there-off.

I haven't EVER gotten a flu shot, and I have only gotten the flu a couple times in my entire life.  Both times from someone that DID get the shot, and it didn't work.  (granted, I'm low risk for exposure compared to most people, I work from home, no kids)

You're kidding, right? Most, if not all, medical facilities and industries require mandatory flu shots.  It's also been linked to reduced sick days, reduced time off work when people get sick, and reduced transmission.

Pertussis vaccine wears off, but it's not one of the routinely renewed ones. I get my shots kept up to date because I'm in the military, and they don't do a booster for that one. I'm thinking they should.

Such as, your kid gets whooping cough (despite getting the vaccine) due to retard parents not immunizing their kids, then you could sue the shiat out of McCarthy?

Probably not. But I'm sure there's a law and order episode about it.
