(HitFix)   Real life Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell, probably won't win an Oscar, but we salute him anyways   (hitfix.com) divider line 23

got to see Mr. Luttrell (wouldn't dare call him anything else) speak once and the guy is the real deal.  he (and his brother) trained from a very young age to be one thing only.  it got very dusty in the room for all in attendance (speaker and audience).

All but one man died...There at Bitter Creek...and they say he ran away.
Branded! Marked with a coward's shame.
What do you do when you're branded, will you fight for your name?
He was innocent . . . not a charge was true . . . but the world would never know.
Branded! Scorned as the one who ran.
What do you do when you're branded, and you know you're a man?
Wherever you go for the rest of your life you must prove ... you're a man.

I read his book, and I must say that was some sad reading but despite of all of that I felt that faith in your common man can save a life.

Remember people, we're all we got.

Yup, that's why it's a good idea not to send them to play Rich Man's RISK with Real People (tm).

If I had to take a crazy stab in the dark I think this movie will get itself caught between Zero Dark Thirty and Act of Valor. As long the movie maintains the human element of the story it should do fine.

*spasms wildly on floor*
Holy fark that was the worst thing I've ever seen. The funniest was how they pitch shifted all of their voices so they sounded extra badass.

Excellent camerawork though, I have to admit...

I don't even see that as a decision.

the fun part is you probably end up in a UCMJ mess if you save your team by killing the kid. Not exactly a clean ROE kill unless nobody else notices or everyone decides to keep to the same story ala "he's coming right at me!"

There was way too much Mark Walhberg in that passage for me to be able to appreciate it I'm sure.

He needs to STFU.

The story of war belongs to the poets. Luttrell's no such animal. Something tells me the screenplay isn't gonna make it any better.

I hope he continues to make tons of money from his dead friends' story.

The most annoying part of the book is his biatching about "liberal" this and "hippie" that constantly.  Half the retelling of the debate about smoking the goat herders seemed to be an attempt to blame their decision making process on "liberals" and/or the media.

Not wanting to kill innocents doesn't make you some dirty hippie.  The military would not have fried those guys for killing those goat herders in that situation.  There are plenty of recent, similar cases that were not prosecuted.

Hindsight being 20/20, live with the fact that you as a team made the wrong decision.  Y'all farked up and it cost lives.  It happens.  Own it.  But don't try to place that decision on the shoulders of everyone else, none of whom where there.

I've got a few SEAL buddies, and was friends with a couple who were killed in Afghanistan.  I have a ton of respect for them, but that farking book really rubbed me the wrong way with some of his silly political asides.

Yeah, that was a load of bullshiat. They had justification for killing the kid and, frankly, could have kept it to themselves.
Even if it had been well known I doubt they would have had to deal with the UCMJ. More likely it would had been written off because it was mission permissible, not some random killing.

I have a really serious question: are all these guys stereotyped Conservative assholes who throw around the words "liberal" "hippie" like spittle or just the few who get published?

You know what I would like to read? A Studs Terkle type oral history of the wars but from the perspective of how much stupid shiat occurred. Talking to a bunch of vets it sounds like a history focusing on the waste, command stupidity, dumb rules, overeager boots and idiots by guys who went and did their job competently would be a really fun read and put some perspective into the wars without the dumb political bullshiat. Actually, I would say we need something like this.

The history of of Iraq and Afghanistan from this perspective is begging to be written.
