So much wharbargllll. What you can spend money on during a shutdown is not a POTUS decision: it's written in laws passed by Congress long ago. Pretending there's some evil behind it merely demonstrates the breadth of knowledge people don't possess about their own government.

I actually think the headline is an excellent question to ask the folks that threatened to damage the global economy through an act of petulance while using the memorials as a political football.

Jesus wept.  That's the outrage for veterans?  Here is an idea on honoring the veterans.  How about not keeping them constantly in a state of conflict for what now... over a decade.  How about actually compensating them enough so that they don't have to use food stamps to feed their families.  A program who the lovers of memorials bemoan as the trough where the lazy and worthless are fed. How about maybe spending money on the actual soldier instead of pie in the sky super weapons.  I read the average cost to a soldier in Iraq  was somewhere between 300 - 400 dollars out of pocket for gear they had to provide for themselves.

How about stepping up and giving those veterans who come back gravely injured or mentally damaged, the kind of care that the mother farkers who sent them get. How about not placing 100% of the sacrifice for these boondoggle conflicts on the soldiers and their families.  Instead of a shared sacrifice where at least we paid taxes to fund these troops, the commander and chief told the citizens to go to disney land.  It wasn't the sons and daughters of elites that went to fight.  In fact, more and more our soldiers are made up of the working and lower classes.  Since we did not share any sacrifice, we had no nagging motivation to end these conflicts as we sent them back again and again into a warzone.  There is something worse than hate, there is indifference.

You want to honor the troops, then treat them like human beings and once they get home, how about not calling them leeches and balking at the possibility that they may suffer some stress related disorders than they need help with... Because if all they are is a symbol and as soon as they move back into just citizen again you ignore them... well go fark yourself because you are what is wrong with us today.

While this is a little too ranty for my tastes, I agree with most of it.

When we ended the draft, we opened the door to more questionable military actions because, well, "they volunteered." When we as a nation don't see the cost of our military actions coming directly out of our paychecks because they're unfunded, we can further distance ourselves from the consequences of these actions. But we can't deny our financial and moral obligation to care for soldiers who come home from the battlefield emotionally and physically broken, nor their families, who bear similar costs during and after their loved ones' deployment.

Everyone, especially people who think we're "taxed enough already," needs to make exceptions for veterans support programs. We may not owe WWII veterans a day at a memorial, but we certainly owe every veteran the benefits they were promised when they signed up.

Obviously the solution is for Congress to shutdown the memorials and then protest against their shutdown and blame the Obama administration.

2013-11-11 01:28:33 PM
Real veterans will call their GOP representative and demand that they don't cut food stamps to veterans. Right now over 130,000 former military vets will loose their only source of food. How is that for supporting our troops?

It worked so well last month! It was a total republican victory and catapulted Ken Cuccinelli to a very close loss in Virginia, thus ensuring that Americans soundly approved all tea party platform points!

Funding the VA properly.

I'd like a few of my friends to stay alive due to the services the VA is giving them, one in particular that is in his early 30s but already has cancer, and would be dead if not for the VA.

You just can't. It's self-explanatory. It's why Obama increased drone strikes, so real American soldiers wouldn't get the glory of killing Obama's Muslim brothers.

We've been conditioned in this country that anything not visibly in support of actively fighting is not "supporting the troops". What does "support the troops!" actually, you know, mean? Memorials of wars are certainly important but more important is not fighting those wars in the first place unless there's a damn good reason. World War II needed to be fought. Afghanistan too. Iraq? No. Vietnam? No. We certainly should remember those veterans who fought in those wars, because they fought and died unnecessarily.

When I see someone driving a huge SUV with a yellow made-in-China ribbon on it, I wonder how they feel about mental health care, funding VA hospitals, and not sending our men and women off to foreign countries for corporate profits, because that's what real support for our troops looks like.

2013-11-11 01:37:08 PM
Obviously the one where GOP politicians decided to hold their demonstrations. Hint: it wasn't at the VA.

It aint about veterans, its about which location is the better photo-op.

In front of a closed WWII memorial where shiatty lawmakers get to ride the coattails of some of America's greatest politicians using angry veterans from a war that is favorably viewed.

or

In the VA surrounded by severely injured veterans that will stand as a generational testament to the congress critters' poor policy decision with regards of where to send "not the army we want, but the army we have".

Fart_Machine: Obviously the one where GOP politicians decided to hold their demonstrations. Hint: it wasn't at the VA.

That's because veterans have been conditioned to shoot enemies hostile to the country on sight.

I remember an exact quote from one of my drill instructors when someone said something like "thanks for your service" to him: "I get thanked on the first and fifteenth.  You want to thank me more than that, tell your congressman to give me a raise or pick up a rifle yourself."

The church I go to asked any veterans present to stand up and be thanked yesterday ... then play a ten minute long montage of crying eagles and a highlight reel of the History Channel from back when it showed actual history.  I stayed sitting in the back because it seems to me that 99% of honoring veterans isn't done to honor them, but instead to say "Hey, look at how patriotic I am for thanking veterans!" *

*If the person in question is a politician, that 99% becomes 100%.  If they are also republican, it increases to infinity.

The recent debacle in October of this year occurred as the Administration's petty closing of the national memorials and monuments

Oh FFS. Go choke on a bag of diseased horse dicks you disingenuous POS.

We love our veterans except when they inconveniently need food and medical treatment and housing.

Also, don't cut SNAP (food stamps) and WIC. The families of many of our current troops need those programs to feed their families.

Veteran: ve-tə-rən n. An object roughly the size, shape and skin color of a photogenic cross-section of desired American demographics admired among political commentators for their oath-bound inability to engage in political debate and thus can be forcibly conscripted into giving virtuous support to any odious argument; archaic. a soldier with wartime experience.

We absolutely have to keep the memorials open ABOVE ALL.  Without memorials, we couldn't have the compelling photo-ops that are required to catapult the propaganda, and inspire people across this great land to support the troops.

You know how they put the little flags on the veteran's obituaries in the paper to show that the recently deceased loved and served their country? They should do that on ballots for elected office for Republicans, too.

I did. Well, I emailed him. He responded thanking me for my email and encouraging me to support his position against obamacare.

If I had the time, I'd be going to the local meetings.

While I totally agree with your sentiment, I question your "former military vets...". Once a Veteran, always a Veteran.
