Just send a few emails to anybody using Gmail and Google will see it.

So before you needed one account on YouTube to comment but now you need one account at g+? Doesn't seem that major.

I'm not one to biatch and whine anytime some minor thing changes on the internet, but unless there is something I'm unaware of beyond "how can we get people to use google+?", this was a really stupid decision.

Google+ will be fine in the long haul, they just need to make a lot more commercials.

Not a big deal if you think posting with your real name on Fark is not a big deal.

Google+ turned successful by accident. Its main and only good use is to use it as a news aggregator with a large swing of that news being tech related. Then comment on the news.

I have a friend who works for Google. About 15mins of our Torchbearer game last night devolved into everyone biatching about Google. His response 'you're not telling me anything I don't already know.'

So YouTube is basically Google+ Videos now? Is Google's plan to wrap all of their services into a Facebook clone?

I love the idea of organizing contacts by groups and being able to tailor my posts to the particular audience. However, the overall experience is a bit frustrating because I am being presented with what Google wants me to see. There may be a way to customize the experience, but since nobody is on the service, I never bothered to find out.

Google should add some major portal functionality in order to give Google+ a "single player" value. If they can get people on the system in order to, say, get a newsfeed and maybe the old Reader functionality, then the users may start sharing with each other and communicating. They have a real chicken and egg problem right now.

I'm just fine with the fact that we've seemed to collectively agreed on a universal social media platform with Facebook.  Yeah, it doesn't do everything as well as we'd like, but it's nice that everyone is more or less in one place.

That said, Google+ has proven useful for photographers.  The way they display their photos, with way less compression distortion, is appealing.  And it has a way less possessive TOS when it comes to the rights they retain over your pictures.  So a lot of photographers have migrated to it and for it's community organizing abilities.

But if I just want to put pictures of the kids up for the grandparents and talking to friends from two duty stations ago, Facebook is just fine.

I like some features of G+... For example, the photo auto-backup function so my phone's pictures and videos have yet another place to live in the cloud is pretty great.

As a social network? It's pretty barren. But if you use it as such to talk to friends, it's much better than Facebook because you have a lot more control over what you post and who can see it. Circles make much more sense than friends lists anyhow.

Yeah, it just isn't very smooth either. IMO. I use a lot of other Google services and they are great, I just think g+ is a swing and a miss for them.

Actually it's easy. I had my Youtube account first then created my Google+ account. It prompted me asking if I wanted to link it. I said no and it created a new Google+ account for my youtube account.

Oh, so that's why I can't see comments on Youtube anymore. Because I refuse to sign into my unwanted Google+ account to view Youtube videos.

Works for me. I'd just as soon not see them anyway.

I actually switched to DuckDuckGo for most searches. 90% of the time it's just as good and since I have search providers installed for both it's only two clicks to rerun a search on Google if DDG doesn't give me what I want. Plus, I like that with DDG that you can play Youtube videos right from the results and you have a lot more image search options even though DDG doesn't have its own image search.

Switched to Hushmail Premium for email and now my GMail account is just a throwaway. Marked most of Google's domains as untrusted in NoScript and whacked all their cookies.

It all works just fine, it's only $50 a year for the Premium account and Google is no longer watching. At least not nearly as directly. Plus I can send the occasional secured email for those rare instances when I have a reason to.

Google+ is great, if you treat it more as a BBS or usenet for collecting your hobbies into one place.

But I can see Google+ being a disappointment if you want it to be a running collection of re-posted kitten pictures and George Takei words of wisdom (which is what my facebook account has sort of turned into).

As a side note, I find it amusing/annoying the amount of whining people can do over changes to a service that a majority of users use for free.

Guess I'm not the target audience, I've looked at Google+ and found it more appealing than Facebook (I liked its "Circles" setup and didn't see a way to partition off groups in Facebook) but I use neither.  My life is boring enough that I don't need to be reminding a very small number of friends exactly how boring it is.

Plug, it helps that I've never commented on a Youtube video so some new requirement (which doesn't look too onerous to me but whatever) isn't a sticking point.  There seems to be some weirdly inconsistent logic at play here, "there is no way i'm using a google account to log into a... google-owned service".

Ad block plus now blocks YouTube comments, so there's one upside at least.

It is more of the fact Google has owned YouTube since 2006 and barely touched it. Now then suddenly want to flip-flops the entire back end to cater to their social network.

Forcing users on to Google+ doesn't actually solve any problem. Trolls will just make troll accounts and post from them until they get banned, while legitimate users who wanted to keep their distinct Youtube identity and not have a public G+ profile are left without the ability to comment. I'm not a troll. I just don't want to expose social connections between my online identity and my real-world one. Google's going to get some of that because I have a bunch of Android devices, but G+ is widely accessible to third parties and I'm not down with that.

Google requires Google+ to provide feedback on Android apps in the Play store now as well. I note that there's still plenty of astroturfing in App reviews, but I can't easily make a feature request to explain a bug now. Gee thanks, Google.

The problem is that "a google account" already did that. I've been logging into my Google account for years to watch Youtube videos that required it. Same with Google search settings and Gmail. One Google account did all of that. Now all of a sudden they're forcing Google+ accounts, which are yet another entity, on everything. Youtube, Play Store, Google Reviews, Gmail, etc. etc.

It's sort of hard to look at how Google operated in the ten years before 2013 then look at the poorly-received Google+ introduction and not come to the conclusion that the flurry of activity with Google+ accounts is aimed much less at improving Google's services and more at trying to leverage certain monopolies to try and force people into something they've clearly rejected already.

People will whine anytime anything changes, yes, but if the changes are reasonable or are actually improvements then eventually the whining subsides. People do not, however, like changes to occur for no reason at all or solely because it benefits the company making the changes. People don't like the familiar being upended just for the benefit of the company.

What is more annoying is now I have yet another farking account.. Although it is more of a virtual account. On YouTube I have to switch to my "styckx" account because in order to keep anonymous I was forced to create this new account that is somehow connected to my real identity.

Such a clusterfark.

That's the stated reason, but the real reason is to force people to use Google+ since it seems hardly anyone wants to use it.  They could have figured out a way to try to clean up the cesspoll that is the comment section on Youtube without forced use of Google+.

Exactly.  People seem to forget that even before Google+ they had announced plans to unify all their services.  It only makes sense to simplify things and tie them together into a cohesive unit to make things more manageable/efficient.

That is half of the argument.  It is the MBA half from the business's perspective.  The other half is that making things more manageable and efficient for the business is folly if by doing so they alienate or drive away more customers than they save in time and expenses.

Also nevermind hiding that bullshiat from prying eyes of employers.

Whats incredibly annoying is people who complain about Googles free services and yet continue to use them.

Set up your own mail server.

Set up your own video sharing website. (If porn companies can do it, so can you.)

Use any of the dozens of other instant messaging programs.

It really rustles my jimmies when people biatch about the free shiat they get, as if they have some sort of right to control what google does with THEIR WEBSITES.

The funny thing I find about this business is that in the early days YouTube WAS a social network. I used to hang out and have conversations with dozens of people with video and comments. Then the partnership program happened. They catered heavily to the assholes that did stupid shiat to attract teens to their channel so they could sell shiat to them and drove all those other people out.
