I have no objection to this. I still consider myself religious, but loads of people look to build a community out of shared interests. Atheists don't get to enjoy the kinds of communities the congregations of churches, synagogues, mosques and temples have. If they're looking to start their own, more power to them.

Conform, damn you.

I personally think it's weird to sing in public, religion or not.

I'm going to have to found a orthodox atheist church, aren't I?

I thought that's what TED conferences were.

That is true of all organized religion. The difference is that the atheists are creating a community based on acceptance, not 5000 year old rules.

repeat?

2013-11-11 01:38:36 AM
so a convention started and ran by two comedians is now "church"?

2013-11-11 02:01:59 AM
Church without religion. Just like most other churches.

Most people go to church for the social gathering, and haven't the brains to come to their own conclusions about the nature of the universe. They just repeat catchphrases and follow the Alphas in the hope of becoming popular in the pecking order.

Do you believe in any deity? No? Then you are a perfectly wonderful atheist. That's all it takes.

You might be failing at being a secular humanist, though. ;)

No, you're just normal. At most it makes you an atheist who isn't a self important tool, like most militant atheists. Be thankful.

This is what religious people want to believe.

Unitarian Universalism - everything good about religion without the baggage of dogma and tribalism

The best part of being an Atheist is not going to church.. These guys are doing it wrong.

2013-11-11 03:44:30 AM
You go to the church, you kiss the cross
You will be saved at any cost
You have your own reality
Christianity
You spend your life just kissing ass
A trait that's grown as time has passed
You think the world will end today
You praise the lord, it's all you say
Jesus saves, listen to you pray
You think you'll see the pearly gates
When death takes you away
For all respect you cannot lust
In an invisible man you place your trust
Indirect dependency
Eternal attempt at amnesty
He will decide who lives and dies
Depopulate satanas rise
You will be an accessory
Irreverence and blasphemy

Jesus saves, no need to pray
The gates of pearl have turned to gold
It seems you've lost your way

Jesus saves, no words of praise
No promised land to take you to
There is no other way

Do they have a child molestation?

Cuz its really not church without the child molestation.

2013-11-11 03:46:42 AM
"What part of that is not to like?" How about the part where I have to leave the house and deal with the kind of people who would go to this? That part.

I have always found the best part of being atheist is having a clear head. I don't really need to join any clubs or sing any songs to do it. But, hey. If it makes these people happy - rock on.

Silly tag totally appropriate.

The weird part is how they're trying so hard to mimic Christian churches to the tee. At least be original. Have the sermon outdoors or something. Or would that be too similar to some other activity like a fair.

yeah, but once they start taking colllections for "church building", elect a senate/deaconate/whatever  they're right back where they started. Organized religion.

I hope this works as I like the *idea*, but I know we're fundamentaly broken as a species, so  I'm just waiting for someone to shiat in the punchbowl and ruin it

When you're trying to recruit from one cult to another, it helps to have similar methods of operation. Brainwashing and indoctrination are brainwashing and indoctrination.

Atheism doesn't want anything.

There are, however, atheists who would like to find the same sense of community that organized religion fosters.

Churches do that too at the Lutheran church I went to as a kid they would have sunrise service outside at sunrise. They also had summer services outside too when the weather was good.

while I agree that regular church would appear to be a publicity stunt by two Australian comedians out to raise money, but it isn't.

Because Loki is right:

LOKI: [to crowd] Kneel before me. I said... KNEEL! Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state? It's the unspoken truth of humanity that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power. For identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel.

Well according to fan girls Loki would be the top no matter what because he can trick Zod. Now with Zod that depends on which movie we're talkin' about here. Seeing he's a DC character Zod is definitely a bottom because Superman always owns his ass.

It's why it will never be taken seriously. No one says you can't have church and believe in what you want outside of it. I still belive in science but at the same time I see the bible as a book of guidelines and rules of life to follow not facts.

You don't see me going to a damn church like a fool. Atheists are not a group that has one single mind-set, probably because we don't all live our lives based on the same fairy tale rule book as everyone else in our peer group. Now religious people, by definition, they NEED that little book so they can all think alike. It comforts them, I hear.
