I'm a bit disgusted by how many of the old geezers are in for child sexual abuse.

Awww.. who locks up such lovable old men.  Especially #5 - he looks so sad.

Have a heart, everyone - let's let them go.

I expected a lot of inmates who'd committed a murder when they were 25 and sentenced for life without parole.

Instead, it's kiddie diddlers and guys who killed someone when they were 70 or 75.  WTF.

I know, that surprised me, too.
At least now I know how I'll get three squares, a bunk and basic medical care if advancing age (say 80-plus) turns life into a daily hell at home.

Johntson, who was 60 at the time of the crime , had initially pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter, and a judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison. But Johnston appealed after the trial judge refused to let him retract his plea prior to sentencing. An appellate court granted Johnston a new trial, which saw him convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Oops

I imagine he's regretted that appeal every day, and even more so since about 2005.

No, that's the reason they're all kiddie diddlers and murderers. It costs waaaay too much money to keep old prisoners, they're released as often as humanly possible, even when sentences aren't up. The only ones they keep are the ones who they really can't release.

The good news is, if you can stomach it...there's probably always someone better off dead. Oh like that asshole who held back evidence and let some bastard rot in prison for 30 years. If I were 65 and sickly...I might see someone considering it over homelessness. Plus you'd be a freakin' hero.

Or rob a bank, but then you'd be traumatizing innocent people, unless you did it while it was closed or something.

Funny thing it..most of the others in for murder look pretty happy.  #14 looks like he is at disneyland.

I surprised at how many of these geezers were so recently convicted: 13 of the 20 did their bad deeds within the last 10 years. Far from these sick f*ckers having grown old in prison, most of them were already old when they got to prison. So much for mellowing with age.

Typically the people in prison are pretty stupid - Exhibit B from the article: "Alan Easterby, 81, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Adult Diagnostic Treatment Center ... The girls were able to give a good description of Easterby, including that he wore a belt buckle with the name 'Alan' on it."

The smart criminals either tend not to be caught or they know how to play the system and stay out of prison.

Kinda sad how you can see the difference in life expectancy by race. There's no way 90% of the inmates in NJ are white, but 90% of the oldest ones are. Either white people are the ones who survive or they are more likely to commit crimes in their 70s and 80s, which seems the stranger of the two explanations.

I know a SGT in the florida state prison, he says here you stay on 23 hour a day lock down - with 4 rec yards, you get assigned a cage. Chances are they won't get a chance to be messed with, reality is they would probably get stabbed or beaten otherwise, in order to not have to deal with that crap, anyone charged with a sex crime automatically goes into Protective custody.

I think even old timers who diddled kids get treated same as anyone in PC - because theres only a few ways you go to PC.

Thompson has been in prison since 1972 for the 1967 murder of Harding Township socialite Dorothy Beck Palmer. Palmer, the wife of Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co. president H. Bruce Palmer, was stabbed to death during a burglary at the couple's New Vernon home.

Am I the only one who immediately thought that this reads like the summary of a 'wrongfully convicted man exonerated after many years' episode of basically any crime drama series? Seriously. A black man in the 70's convicted of murdering the wife of a wealthy businessman during a burglary? It's like an episode of Cold Case or Castle or something. I'm not saying he's innocent or anything, but this is the plot of dozens of crime show episodes that end with the senator or CEO or whomever getting busted for the crime.
