As long as the roads are passable (eg. light dusting of snow), I'm OK with winter. Having your vehicle encased in ice? Not so much....

Snow is beautiful when it falls, it's totally normal to drink hot chocolate on a regular basis and visiting family (can be) really enjoyable.

I live in a region where snow never, ever, ever falls. If I drank hot chocolate on a regular basis I would be drenched in sweat and diabetic. And most of my family are d-bags. And all of the other "reasons" they listed require the presence of snow and other winter weather. Humbug.

This year, for the first time since the 1970s I was unable to ride my motorcycles, having spent the last six months on crutches because of foot surgery last spring. The only reason that I am looking forward to winter is that it will be followed by spring and the 2014 riding season.

At least Ms Capt. is properly ready having just tucked the SLK away next to the bikes and acquired a new-to-us Cross Country.

www.petexpertise.com That is how I tire my German Shepherd out in winter. I even use it inside if I'm really desperate. I don't live in Canada though so winter is much shorter. I also have ultra warm clothes and dog boots for my dog (I only use them for really bad days when the sidewalks are covered in salt or very slick ice or when ice balls would form between his foot pads) so we can take winter walks. Our local park is deserted in winter, tromping through 4' of snow eventually tires my dog out.

I also hide toys and treats in the house and tell him to 'find it' and he searches the house, sprinting the whole time. If we are really bored in winter I will put handfuls of his food in newspaper, wad it up (do this a whole bunch and mix up empty newspaper too) and put it in a cardboard box for him to search through. Mental exercise can tire a dog out.

I love winter except for the whole eternal darkness thing.

There is a difference between it snowing and it actually being cold. Cold is a relative term and in some places when the snow starts, the drop in temperature has barely begun.

Bush gave up golf during the Gulf War.

I don't mind winter if we actually get some snow, I don't ski but I love blasting through snow in my Jeep. If we don't get snow then we have no water (and we're already the state with the least amount of surface water) in the summer & wildfires are bad.

I really prefer summer, fishing, camping, hiking.

I live in SW Florida and I'm pumped for Winter:

The A/C cycles on every 45 minutes versus 15.
We're out of hurricane season.
Your exposed skin only gets a 30% coverage of mosquitoes when you step outside versus the 75-80%.
Things tend to stay open an hour or so later.

Of course, there's the downside to all of this.  Tourists.

Snow does not require a particularly cold temperature. Anything around the freezing point will do. As winter temperatures go, anything around the freezing point is not cold.

Snowmobiles are fun in their own right in the same way that quads are fun or Can-Am Spyders are fun. You can certainly have a blast or putter along and enjoy the scenery on any one of those, even though none of them is a motorcycle. Regardless, for the time being they are all off the menu. Complete healing will take a year, which takes me to the spring of next year. Just in time to demothball the Hog and the DR.

That said, the previous owner of Ms. Capt's XC was a snowmobiler. Included in the sale were the four studded Hakkapelitas with which he equipped the car for towing his sleds to and from any trailhead, marked or unmarked, in the known universe. Once installed I suspect the big Volvo will be a match for any snowmobile.

Yeah...there are worse places to live, but the sub 0 days are just plain rough.  Anything under 25 or so really isn't very pleasant IMO and that is a good chunk of winter.

I hated winter, maybe it's better in mountainous areas but in the flat farm riddled fly over country I grew up in, it was brutal. Snow is pretty when it first falls, then it gets mixed with the dirt and filth. Pretty soon the snow is gray, and the sky is gray, and it's dark in the morning when driving to work, and it's dark in the evening when getting out of work, and it's cold, and it lasts for months until the sun becomes nothing more than a memory of some bygone era, desperately clung to as the chill takes hold and the feet burn while digging the car out of yet another snowfall.

I do miss having a real Autumn, but it's worth not having to live in a place with no real winter.

Still it's an indication that we humans once had an earthly paradise with ice free poles and very likely wore few if any clothes. "They" say myth is rooted in some sort of lost series of real events.
