(Examiner)   There's a huge petition drive to change a Florida high school's name from Nathan Bedford Forrest High School to something else. Why? It's a little KKKonfusing   (examiner.com) divider line 77

is this a repeat, or are there just a shiatload of schools in the south named for this traitorous piece of shiat?

You'd be surprised on how many schools are still named after Confederate soldiers

Or how many streets are named after Confederate generals! We even have a statue.

I think it's still sad that the nation's largest military base is named not only for a traitorous general, but one who was astoundingly incompetent at his job.

Confederate soldier/general?  Fine.  It's history.  Even if they were on the losing side, they fought valiantly and honorably.

KKK Wizard?  Fark that guy, change the name.

When your country conscripts you to defend the nation, few have the privilege of conscientiously objecting.  You fight.

Well, that would explain why the Union forces fought. You seem, however, to forget the Confederates where the aggressors in the Civil War, not the "defenders".

A) the south wasn't defending anything. it seceded in order to preserve the institution of slavery.
B) we're talking about generals here.

This school is mostly black--I heard it from another story. 85% or something. So change the name. I wouldn't want to go to a school named after some KKK guy either.

Talk to the Germans. They have some serious insight on what it means to fight for a horrible ideal and to couch it in patriotism and brotherhood.

Except that defending the nation would mean fighting for the union against slavery not for it.

And most soldiers in the civil war were volunteers, but never mind.

Practically every Army base in the South is named after a Confederate general. We have military bases named after people who killed more American soldiers than Hitler.

Change it to David Duke High School.

I would consider that a good reason. Name it after Carl Sagan. I don't think he's got any high schools in his name yet

Well that makes it OK then because the Southern aristocracy found rubes to fight for their way of life.

If the teachers were smart they would claim that working in a school named after a racist constitutes a hostile work environment. Then the school system would have to either change the name or suffer frivolous lawsuits from employees union.
Or they can just wait until some maladjusted teen snaps and guns down the student body and staff and then they'll bulldoze and rename it.

Ah, Jacksonville. You must have your Nathan B. Forrest HS, yet even Alabama can resist naming a school for George Wallace.

Why not? Works for the Buffalo Soldiers and Pinkerton's Cuba campaign.

Adolph Hitler High School is the leading candidate for the new name.

I don't have an inherent objection to naming things after Forrest.  But that's not relevant here.

They named the high school after him to protest desegregation.  Change it.

I think I have a solution, so where they'd only need to change the sign a little bit.

To be fair, Forrest later distanced himself from the Klan, spoke against them and for equality and harmony between blacks and whites.

Texas has a few proud and famous places where the confederate draft had a hard time finding folks and only half of them are in big cities.
But back to the thread. This school has murals of MLK and Einstein as the kind of Rebels they should emulate. No word on when wizard Forrest was expelled from Hogwarts.

I live near the Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park, I live in Bedford county. There is a HUGE ugly-ass statue of him on I-65 just south of Nashville. The courthouse has his picture hanging in it.
TnVacation website calls him an "intrepid Confederate cavalry leader" whilst touting the many reasons you should vacation at the park with your family.

*Help me*

It's Jacksonville? Name it after Leonard Skinner. He was a teacher or a gym coach, right?
