Yawn.

How anyone over the age of 15 can play this game, I don't understand. The plot is horrible, the action is incredibly repetitive, and the ideas are trite. You only have so many hours in a day to devote to gaming; why would you waste it blandly raiding and constantly trying to level up, when there are SO many better/more interesting/more playable games out there.

What drove me away from it, eventually, it just seemed too much like work.  I'd log in and, oh, better do some mining.  Time to do the daily quest.  Oh, my guild wants me to raid with them.  I'd spent 8 hours doing a series of tasks based on a schedule, why come home and spend several more hours doing a series of tasks based on a schedule?  Especially since, in that case, I was the one paying to do it.

That, and it just doesn't get you anything. You play 100+ hours to get to X level...and then what? You brag you have a character at X level?

If I'm going to invest that kind of time, I at least want to gain a broadly applicable skill (if you're good at one FPS, the skills translate to all others, some sense of accomplishment (if I win the Super Bowl in Madden with the Browns, I feel kind of badass), or even just see something pretty and innovative (I LIKED Flower, ok? STFU).

If I have to choose between endless hours of WoW or endless hours of, say, Starcraft II, I'll take the latter every time.

Or I'll just go build shiat for free in Minecraft.

WoW does the rest of the gaming world a service by keeping all those players busy.  No matter how stupid the player base in whatever your current game might be, it would be stupider if not for WoW.

When they started merging servers they broke some of them, guilds disappeared, gear disappeared and worst of all many players even lost characters. It has been two weeks now and guilds are still broken and my level 90s are still missing despite going through many tickets. Needless to say I will not be renewing.

I was getting bored with it anyway and this is the most underwhelming expansion they've released yet.

Just think how League of Legends is helping then.  I hear the player base for that game is at least as bad as for WoW.

Anyway, regarding the expansion, wasn't Draenor basically those floating islands in the burning crusade?  I thought players had already seen Draenor(or its remains at least.)

Whatever the case, WoW is not appealing nowadays.

They're using Alternate Dimensions to open up a past version of Draenor that never got all gunked up by the Burning Legion, never became the hell-scape that is Outland.

The basic plot is Garrosh, the son of Grom Hellscream, we beat him in the Siege of Orgrimmar badly. But before being put on trial, he escapes with the help of a person with time/space bending powers to go back to where he thinks the world makes sense - his home world, before the corruption of the Burning Legion. There he wants to unite the Orcs under his banner - calling it the Iron Horde using thier strength, numbers and his technology - and march them into the current mainstream plot era and have them destroy Varian's Alliance and Vol'jin's Horde.

The best online gaming experience I've had was with Neverwinter Nights.  It wasn't the game engine itself, but that one particular server had done such an incredible job designing a fun world to play in.  Magic and healing were unavailable in stores for the most part, so characters with those abilities were highly valued; they even tweaked some monsters to have weaknesses to give smart wizard players an edge (frost giants being vulnerable to fire being a good example).  In addition, certain areas of the map contained creatures and bosses so powerful that no one but high level fighters really stood a chance, and they needed the backup of support characters to do it.  In other words, they designed a world where it was required to form a party, and once you did, it was a blast.  I forget the server name...BlackCompany I think; the world and quests were based on LotR, and it was really well done.

I can only speak for myself but cataclysm is where they lost me.  They tried to homogenize my druid into some sort of furry warrior.  If I wanted a warrior I would have rolled one.  Anyway, it was a fairly uninteresting expansion.  Tol Barad was perhaps one of the laziest designs imaginable; players just basically went in a circular migration pattern.  Just felt like a sort insulting "hey, we made you an expansion, it has our name on it, now fork over your money."

Shortly after it released I determined that there wasn't much purpose to a continued subscription.

Same here. I suddenly realized I was working two jobs - but only getting paid for one. It ate up so much free time with the grinding and raiding... I just couldn't do it any more and quit.

I tried to go back at some point last year and quickly remembered why I'd quit. My gear - which I had done countless raids and grinds to carefully accumulate - was now completely worthless and to even grind with some friends/old guild mates for good gear I had to start grinding heroics to gear up for THAT. It took me 2 whole logins to go "Fark this bullshiat" and cancel my account again.

I have no desire to go back or play any MMO's. The closest thing I'm interested in to an MMO is the upcoming Star Citizen, and that's got a whole single player game attached to it.

Well, seeing as i haven't taken part in any real online MMOs that aren't browser based i can't really rate it, but as i said above, i enjoy it immensely. There is the whole PvP and PvE thing, but there is also a whole story line, like a single player mode, that you can do all your own. Fleet battles can be pretty fun, depending on what you are, a fast nimble escort dishing out damage, a big slow-turning cruiser with lots of hull tanking, or a science vessel that supports other ships, with similar on ground missions. Just don't bother with the drop boxes, though.

2013-11-10 11:20:57 AM
I think the one free level 90 is a game changer. This might mean the beginning of the end for leveling mechanics (although it looks like the garrison thing is the new level grind, so maybe not).

2013-11-10 11:39:55 AM
I am so looking forward to creating my garrison. I've been saying for years that staying in Inns sucks and we should be able to buy our own houses, etc. So now not only are we going to get houses, we get to build our own freaking towns and attract NPCs to do our gathering for us whether we're online or not. Such an incredible time saver.

I think that the reason I have not lost interest in the game since I started playing right at the BC expansion and have 72 toons is that I don't raid. I don't belong to any guilds but my own bank guilds (some of them leveled to the max so I get all the perks without any drama). I never ground for gear and so I don't care about it, just so long as I can survive in high-level areas I'm good.

People who took it all too seriously and got burned out raiding and fighting guild dramas are the ones who have left, while myself and hubby who enjoy the world and play as we please when we please are perfectly happy and looking forward to another expansion.

Honestly, I thought at least in terms of game mechanics and design philosophy Cataclysm was the best expansion of the ones I played (I quit just before MoP). TBC was too exclusionary by catering almost solely to what in WoW passes for the hardcore crowd with even stricter class roles and too-highly-tuned raids and heroic encounters, overcompensated in WotLK by over-standardizing the classes and making raids/heroics way too easy. Cataclysm was a healthy middle ground, where players had to know their classes and each class  did have a unique feel (though you're right, feral druids at that point were just one-offs of rogues and warriors), and instances had tailored difficulty levels to meet player expectations.

Sure, the instances were somewhat lackluster in design and creativity in Cataclysm, but the mechanics were sound. The main problem with that expansion, in my mind, was squarely with the community -- after WotLK, players who started during that expansion never really learned to play, and most vets had forgotten  how to play. The first few months of Cataclysm were  horridfor that, with healers whining nonstop about having to manage mana, tanks whining nonstop about having to manage survivability, and DPS whining nonstop about having to manage aggro and CC. It was almost as if they were playing an MMO.

EC is never a problem with me. I got several Klingon alts tear-assing throughout the quadrant doing doff missions for mats and other goodies. I can make about 6 million EC per day. Plus my alts already have the rep marks to make the needed "Reputation Sponsorship Token" for my new main.

It's the Master Keys and Lobi that I'm hoarding for the rollout this Tuesday.

I don't like to group in MMOs, I'd much rather muddle along soloing.

WoW was fun for me for the first 30 or 40 levels.  But then I noticed something that was game-breaking for me.  When I was fighting the giant bugs in that one zone, or I went to fight the demons in the first expansion, the game didn't get harder.  The giant bugs didn't swarm me.  I just pulled the same groups of 2 or 3.  Soloing at level 40 (maybe I got to 50, I don't remember) was exactly the same as soloing at 15 or 20.  I cancelled my account soon thereafter.

/the best MMO was Everquest up to the Velious expansion.  They ruined the game with Luclin and PoP, but up until that point, best MMO ever.  No one can argue with me.

It's actually pretty easy. Just drive your Klink cruiser from quadrant to quadrant, and along the way pick up doff missions for your crew to do and then log off. Your guys will do the work for you while you're off doing something else and then come back when you have free time again and collect the bounty.

You can speak for me too. I actually lost interest the day the pre-content patch dropped and quit playing before the next month's cycle started. I tried it about a year later when it dropped in price, but only managed to muddle through two months before I gave up. Haven't played in more than two years now.

Which is a bummer, because I did like the game through WotLK and if they created some servers like the time-locked progression server in EQ that let you play through the content from the start again I'd play again... but it's just not a fun game anymore.

I've been playing Guild Wars 2 again, but I can only take that in fits and starts as well since it has the same crap problem it's predecessor did: ain't nothing to do once you cap except farm for mats to create prestige items, but ANet constantly punishes you for farming.

I left during Cata, but not not for gameplay reasons, not because "omfg pandas suck" or "they nerfed my class" or "they made x class overpowered", but because I was tired of the never ending treadmill. Farm shiat for professions, farm dungeons for gear, farm heroics for gear, farm raid bosses for gear, then start all over again with the next expac. Starting alts was no fun because finding people to actually do lower end content sucked ass since everyone just wanted to rush through shiat as fast as possible to make it to max level. I don't think MMO's with that playstyle will completely die, but they're certainly on the wane. It would be better for someone like Blizzard and other companies making MMO's to just stop making WoW expacs and move on to another MMO, do an expac or two and move on to the next game and avoid the constant treadmill effect.

It refers to the numbers on the keypad used to activate various abilities in the game. The implication being that game play is repetitive.

I haven't played wow in a long time, but I enjoyed the ride and knew a lot of fun people who played it.

Raiding was too time consuming and arenas were stupid and detrimental to pvp balance in other areas. Flying ruined world pvp.

But I actually enjoyed dailies, which brought a bit of world pvp back (should had flying mounts blocked from those areas imo) and battlegrounds honestly never got boring for me if I was entering with friends.

The mmorpg haters usually sound to me like people who never played them. Not saying it is everyone's cup of tea, but the number of people who masturbate over skyrim yet complain about doing repetitive quests, large time wasted traveling to new areas that don't pan out, repetitive combat, or leveling new builds and characters always strikes me as funny.

Please, don't act as if most classes didn't have pretty repetitive ability priorities for raiding. Yeah there's decisions about what to use when but the vast majority of those abilities were usually spaced out between a single filler ability along with one or two abilities that were on a regular CD. For raiding purposes most classes had 3-5 main abilities to use along with the occasional situational ability.

Smackledorfer: And don't get me started on how few buttons all console games have to press!

Because more buttons makes a game more fun?
With combinations you can have plenty of options using a standard console controller.

saintstryfe: Gergesa: Anyway, regarding the expansion, wasn't Draenor basically those floating islands in the burning crusade?  I thought players had already seen Draenor(or its remains at least.)

When did Blizzard start hiring fanfic writers?  I mean it, that sounds utterly retarded.

I think the point of contention is that the repetitive elements in World of Warcraft are kind of terrible, which they are.

Brokenseas: WoW was fun for me for the first 30 or 40 levels.

Thats why PVP servers exist.  Leveling in vanilla wow was great because of random world pvp, as was the launch of Burning Crusade when everyone was leveling in the same zones at the same time.

Then flying mounts came and ruined world pvp and the game (and insta queues removing any necessity for actually going into the game world put the other nail in the coffin).
