Maybe that would be a bit more convincing if the military wasn't just a funnel into the pockets of private contractors and defense equipment companies.

Minor threadjack.

It's my opinion the wars, putting women to work, was the tipping point in making two-income households a near necessity today.

Not to say that anyone who wants to work shouldn't, just that as soon as corporations learned that both members of a couple *could* work, prices rose to make that a near-requirement.

Just like how sending everyone to college dilutes the value of a degree.

Turns out a war economy actually becomes a bit restricting after 50 years.

There is no choice in the matter.

It's interesting how so many of these would be controversial today.  Republicans would hate the idea that anyone would sacrifice anything for other people, as that's what they've sunk to.  Democrats would be outraged at the terrible sexist portrayal of women and the racist portrayal of the enemies.

Or any of them really. Put us in a conflict that matters and that would likely change.

Problem is that it's not true any more.
Unless you think that countries in need of liberty are ones with strategic positions by or with large oil reserves.

These are from a bygone age on a number of levels. First, people would scoff at such overt propaganda. But second, people are more than willing to allow themselves to be influenced by ignorance despite both clear evidence and plain self interest. And third, the socio economic gulfs in America will likely prevent common participation like ensued with the drafts. That's not a point on the draft from a military perspective. It's a social point in that there can't be such a great equalizer today.

Rather than extra bonds, I'd wager #40 would benefit more from proper training in the use of his rifle.  Even if he's out of ammo, he's still got a bayonet on the end.

Looks like you haven't been in a politics thread on Fark. Or even an iHater thread. It's amazing what garbage people will believe, and parrot endlessly without thinking about what they're saying.

At the beginning of the war there was no government withholding from paychecks, taxpayers would pay by the quarter.  It wasn't till the middle of the war that withholding was passed so the US Treasury would have a steady cash flow.

Taxes also went up significantly from what people were used to, at the start of the war the lowest rate was just under 5 percent and increased to 23 percent by war's end.  Federal withholding made it more difficult to object to increased taxes since the government already had your money.
