That's a forward mounted scout-style scope. Judging by the choice of scope, design of the bayonet, the muzzle brake, and the gas block, that rifle is likely to be a AK-74 variant. However unorthodox, the scout scope is very practical setup for an AK-pattern rifle, especially in a smaller caliber like.5.45mm Also, milsurp bayonets are awesome because they look cool, and they're often sold together with the rifle in the same package.

tl;dr Rifle is cool, scope is cool, dude's coat and mustache are cool, milsurp bayonet is awesome, sunglasses are awesome, the parrot is awesome, whole picture overall is badass

This is just a smash-stab-slash-buttstroke in the dark here, but I'd hazard a guess that you were a big fan of the Human/Lizard Loaf and were devastated when that entree was retired from MRE rotation, weren't you?

/A scope on an AK (you know, an ol' shake-rattle-roll-can't hit-the-broad-side-of-a-сарай-past-175-meters AK) is a waste of a scope.

CSB: a couple of weeks ago I did a local half marathon. At one point the course followed the edge of a small field on two sides, so there was a constant stream of runners along half of the perimeter of this field. As I said, the field was small, perhaps 300-400 yards on a side.

As I (along with a couple of hundred or more other runners) ran along the edge of the field, three or four fowl hunters let fly simultaneously in the center of the field from a blind that I hadn't seen until they opened fire. This really struck me as very poor judgment. Too many people, too close by for shooting IMHO.

I don't know if this is true or not, but when I was learning to shoot I was told that women were better shots than men (once they learned how) because women have proportionally smaller hearts and that makes it easier for them to keep the gun steady.

When I took a girlfriend and her son target shooting for her son's birthday (he turned 17), I suggested to her that she not wear her usual low cut top for that very reason.  She had awesome boobs that she didn't mind showing off, so it was a shame, but I got to play with them later that evening so it worked out.

I was wondering about the combination of assault rifle and parrot, myself.

I guess the bayonet is to stop the barrel when the kick from the AK sends it into the ceiling.

Speaking as a female hunter who just got her second white-tailed doe of the archery season, I hunt because deer are tasty and because my working husband doesn't have time to hunt.

$24 license + $30 worth of vacuum pack bags = 84lb of lean meat in my freezer that keeps us fed for an entire year. It makes good financial sense when the price of everything in the grocery store keeps going up.

Venison stew meat, add in some green beans I canned, add in some tomatoes I canned, add in some potatoes, carrots, and onions I grew, add in some homemade broth, and you have a pot of soup or stew. Serve on the side with some hot sourdough bread I made, and that's some good eats. The economy got me back in the kitchen doing things the way my mother and grandmother taught me. I'm saving money and healthier for it.

I don't hunt for sport, just to feed my family. I don't get a thrill in killing, but I am grateful for what the animal has provided me.

One of my wife's underlings is an avid hunter. There's a disconnect for most folk when they find out, the woman is 5'2, a hundred pounds, super cute and super girly. Totally threw me when I found out she loved to hunt, since most of the female hunters I know...are less than womanly and attractive. She's absofarkinglutely deadly with a bow, rifle, well...any weapon, actually. We've been out hunting a few times and this chick is beast. Perfect kills, every single time. Loves the hunt, loves the kill.

For starters.

It's still a damned sight easier than spotting a woman with VD.

I wouldn't bother putting a scope on an AK, it's really not made for any kind of range. The SKS has a longer barrel and I think it's a much better shooter anyway. 125gr hollow points are available in 7.62x39 and the writers say it's very similar ballistically to the .30-30 round which is still the most used cartridge for game here in the US. Lever actions are still the #1 used rifle for deer.

Is there any trick to cooking it or ingredients you can pair it with to cut the....I don't know how to describe it, metallic deer taste? I like the idea of eating it in theory because like you said it's cheap and probably had a better life than being in a pen but I don't like that metallic flavor.

I like the idea of eating it in theory because like you said it's cheap and probably had a better life than being in a pen but I don't like that metallic flavor.

Deer need to be bled very quickly after death, and butchered not soon after. Bucks tend to be more 'metallic' than does. Although I am in no way an expert on the subject, I've found this works best.

Simply treat it like liver and soak it in milk for 30 min. before you cook it.

The flavor of the meat varies based on what they've been foraging when harvested.  Millet, clover, corn...all good.  Acorns and blueberries..not so much.  The gamey flavor also tends to be concentrated in connective tissue, so removing as much of that as possible helps.  I also find that a good marinade like soy/ginger will make it almost impossible to tell you are eating deer as opposed to really really good beef.

If venison has an off taste, it was almost certainly shot poorly, field-dressed poorly or butchered poorly. Contamination from the stomach or intestines is probably what you're tasting.

If your shot is forward of the diaphragm, if you do your cutting without puncturing anything you shouldn't, and if you get the meat cooled quickly, there will be no 'metallic', 'liver', 'sour' or 'gamey' taste.

And ignore the armchair nimrods who tell you to 'age' venison, or 'bleed' deer.

I thought I was pretty good with field dressing and butchering, but one year I went to a butcher who processes deer every fall and offered to work for a couple days in exchange for the education. It was really worthwhile (and he paid me anyway). I do a much better, more efficient job now, and I get a lot more meat off the neck and shoulders than I ever could before. I was appalled at the condition of some of the deer carcasses people brought to him for processing.

Question for people who eat what they hunt - how can you be sure that the animal doesn't have a disease or dangerous parasites?

A trained eye can tell. Which is why most states require processing be done by a licensed vendor (who inspects the meat).

Even better when you teach them to do the gutting.  I was out with an uncle and some cousins, when one checked a small grove of woods, spooking out a doe and her bambi's.  We knew the three deer as they have been spending a lot of time around uncle's farm, so no one shot.  Sadly the three crossed the street, and a small car took out the first year buck.  The driver came down to uncle's house to use the phone, and while we chatted, the guy's wife was already field dressing the buck.  One cousin let out a "What a woman."  Sadly for the driver, they were on their way home from picking up the car from the body shop.  The car got two deer that year.

I know three lady hunters, an aunt who used to hunt with a M1, one in her 40's who hunts both bow and gun, and a mid 20-something tall hottie, I think may only hunt bow.  I'll have to ask if the young one shoots gun as well.  The aunt surprised me for two reasons, she is really lady like and my uncle was quite sexist, the other reason, the M1.  My sexist uncle gave her the M1, because it was the smaller gun in his collection.  I really want to see what he used, but since his passing, I think she has sold it off.  The young lady almost surprised me till I met her fiancé.  They go into the woods with matching camouflage and makeup.  It's so cute.

When I was in Army boot camp ('83), female troopies did not receive any hand-to-hand combat training because it was assumed that "women will never be in combat and therefore will not need those skills." Instead, we spent twice as much time at the firing range as the male solders did -- and female units almost always won the shootin' awards. I definitely agree about the "no bad habits to unlearn." The majority of the women in my group had never fired a weapon, so they took direction well when learning how to use the M-16.

I'm surprised that there haven't been any jokes about hunting females... Of course, the gun threads do tend to bring out the gun/hunting types, who tend to be a) nicer and more civilized than the average Farker and b) less likely to joke about shooting people, so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised after all. Or maybe it's the gatherers rather than the hunters who go after the low-hanging fruit...

If your wife enters the hunting licence pool, it doubles your chance of getting a licence. But then you have to take her hunting with you just in case you bag a moose or deer or whatever.

Where I come from (Province of New Brunswick) there is a small population of women who hunt and fish. They are not all tomboys or lesbians either. Some of them are otherwise quite girley girls. There is nothing which prevents a woman from being a good shot. Under the laws of King Edward III (IIRC), both girls and boys had to learn archery.

Women were not allowed in combat but they could man the pallisades and many have had to keep the fort with nothing but the old men and boys or even with nothing more than their daughters marching back and forth to fool the beseigers.

Other women just like to get out of the house, or keep an eye on the husbands. Quite a few don't really care for salmon-fishing or hunting but put their names in the lottery pool for their male relations.

It takes all kinds to put salmon and venison on the table. I don't care for hunting or fishing much but I don't mind the eating.

Having women involved can probably civilize hunting, fishing and other manly diversions to some extent.

Rule one: you kill it, you clean it. Fish and game alike. Before you get home, preferably. Makes it easier to carry, any way.

My uncle was hunting with his brother-in-law, who is quite obese. They sho a moose but the brother-in-law had a heart attack from the effort and excitement. Instead of two men packing moose meat out of the woods, my uncle had to carry his brother-in-law. AN OBESE MAN, CARRIED MORE THAN 12 MILES, POSSIBLY 14 MILES.

My uncle is a woodsman. A real pro. As a forester for a big compay, he was leaving trees to reseed cut land and leaving uncut zones along streams and trees with bird nests in them decades before the environmentalists and foreign certification boards demanded such practices.

You have to admit that a guy like that has some cred.

My uncle and aunt have worked out a quid pro quo where she goes along with his woodsman things like fishing trips to my grandfather's primitive camp in the Miramichi River basin and he goes to the condo she bought in town with her savings from work. Very sensible and healthy give-and-take for both of them.

In Corus Christi we have a real problem with "slob fishermen"  who catch a nice fish, suitable for dinner for two, then just throw the damn thing away because they are too lazy to clean and fillet it.

I have never seen a woman do that, everything they catch, they eat.

Slob hunters are about the same way, they really have no use for the meat, they just like the macho experience of hunting.

Deer are overpopulated in Texas right now, but I despise seeing them killed merely for sport.  Women are probably better custodians of wildlife than men.

They would have a time being worse.

I've mentioned this before, but on my favorite hiking trail, I met one of the adjacent land owners once, and she told me that a few years back, the folks with the "POSTED" signs at the top of the hill killed 3-4 deer, stripped them for trophies, and then dumped the corpses in the creek bed. I guess they got fined by the DEC, but I saw a truck parked near the brush the night BEFORE bow season started. This is a property with no visible buildings within about a quarter-half mile from this trail head. They've probably just gotten better at hiding the evidence =/

Nearly 50 years ago, I accompanied my father & brother with the rest of the male cousins on the annual first day of buck season in northwest PA. My mother stayed at home with my little brother who wasn't old enough yet to go out for deer. (My dad required us to have a couple seasons of small game experience before we were allowed out with a high powered rifle.)

At any rate, Mom sends us all off into the pre-dawn morning and starts preparing breakfast for my little brother. She looks out the kitchen window at the garden and there's a rabbit. She goes on about her business and looks up a little later and the rabbit is still there. She goes back to the TV room, selects a single shot .22 from the gun rack, rummages around in the accessory box until she finds a shell that will fit, loads the rifle, cranks open the casement window, takes aim on the rabbit and pulls the trigger.

Once she figures out that you have to manually cock the rifle after you've loaded it, she takes aim again and dispatches the rabbit with clean shot right in the back of the head.

We came home skunked about 8 hours later and she made us clean it.

RE:  AKs with scopes.

AK and SKS rifles are gradually taking over the place held by lever action rifles like the Winchester Model 94 as the "deep woods/swamp deer carbine".  The round they fire is perfectly good for deer, being just a smidge less powerful than the .30-30 Winchester, the rifles themselves are short and handy in the woods, you get a quick follow-up shot, and pretty much every AK I've shot could put all their rounds in an 8" circle at 100 yards, which is good enough when you expect to shoot at deer at the most that far away, and usually much closer.

SKS rifles tend to be even more accurate than that.

My girlfriend decided she wanted to go hunting this year with me.  She already shoots, all kinds of guns and has her own bow that she uses for target practice only.  I will say that she is super pissed that 90% of all hunting clothing made for women has pink all over it.  I've heard about how much she hates pink and how it's a discrace for the last month.

She still went hunting though and still had fun though.

It's a scout scope.  That means it's probably, at most, 2.5 power, and it's long eye relief.  It's the sort of thing someone with presbyopia might want, because focusing on the sights and the target at the same time gets problematic as you get older.  It puts the target and the reticule in the same sight plane.  No different than slapping a red dot sight on it.

So basically, meh.  It's not like it's made for nailing a quarter at 200 yards.

The nice thing about my flintlock is that it is so long that the sights are far enough away that it has staved off that need for a while, but I'm rapidly approaching the time when I'm going to need a clarifier* in order to be able to hit anything.

*A small aperture "peep" sight that clips to your glasses and helps bring the sights into focus.
