We all know this is just God's wrath on the Soviets. The big man was just running a bit late and missed the collapse of communism.

Dr. Gashnikova

Really, that's an actual name and not just punking the reporter? Fear of a super strain of HIV might even keep the prostitution under control at the olympics.

Wow, a new strain of HIV and in the last few years, a new heroin like drug that also largely originated in Siberia (google "Krokodile") that's slowly making its way to the US.

Fun times.

As long as it still requires sharing needles or barebacking an unfamiliar partner in order to catch it yawn who cares. Now if HIV ever goes airbourne its time to have a final solution to the HIV problem.

Perhaps this is the mild strain of HIV that is bound to eventually come out, the one that getting prevents you from acquiring the bad one that leads to AIDS.

FTA: In order to test virulence, the team looked for the protein p24, which is associated with HIV disease progression in the body. They cultured the virus for 11 days and then looked for the amount of p24 produced.  They found twice the level of p24 in the CRF02_AG/A strain in comparison to other circulating strains from the region.   The virus was indeed more virulent as it could hasten the progression of disease and potentially the onset of AIDS.  Yet when it came to the actual effect of this rapid progression on the body, they found the exact opposite effect.  When cells were infected with the CRF02_AG/A strain, they were less likely to be harmed and die.

Sooo... lets decode this.  It is "indeed more virulent" because it has a high level of a protein that "could" hasten the progression of disease and "potentially the onset of AIDS" - but is less likely to the cells it infects or cause symptoms, so actually is less likely to cause AIDS, i.e. HIV "symptoms".

In other words, it is evolving in the direction of harmlessness, as most diseases do.  My God!!! Disaster!
