So brony market forces are now an economic indicator? Excellent. Maybe it can join the waffle house index

So you mean when you don't pay employees well then they don't have money to spend..... What a concept.

Summercat: So... Bronies not buying enough you say...

My argument would be toy saturation. I spent money and have a set of toys. I don't need to buy another just because this set comes with stickers.

Almost like marginal propensity to consume applies to people who like magical unicorn toys too!

Heh. My apologies.

I will say that I expect my purchases to increase in the semi-near future: Raspberry Pi voice box for Build a Bear plushies. Set it up and treat it like a remote Roku box synced to a phone. Put some velcro on the back so the rechargeable batteries can be swapped out and I would be a happy man.

But, the bastards at Build A Bear are releasing the toys every 5-6 months in the order of most popular according to their survey. It makes sense from a business perspective, except that the obvious Best Pony traditionally ranks near the bottom - which proves that the fandom is stupid.

Personally I don't buy anything because they always have the wrong damn merch!

I finally saw some pony goods out here in Japan. What did the they have? A Sweetie Belle T-shirt.

Do they even know who best pony is?

Never mind Hasbro's decent performance lately, because MLP is but a small part of Hasbro's brand portfolio. Check out the performance of the company that animates the show. If you'd bought DHX Media (which trades in Canada under DHX.TO) about the time the show went viral in mid-2011, your returns wouldn't be 20% cooler, you would have trebled or quadrupled your money in three years.
/I don't own any HAS or DHX.TO, but I do find it delightful that the confirmation of a Season 4 came, in part, through reading DHX's public filings.

Pretty much. And even if they're completely different toys, you can only really buy so many before going "wtf?" -- I never bought any G2 transformers back in the heyday because even as a kid I thought it was stupid, heck, I knew it was stupid when they started phasing out G1 characters for Post Transformers-movies characters. As cool as Kup was in the movie, I didn't need his toy.

Bronies are so three years ago. The market is tapped out and saturated.

What we need is more creativity in this country so more people can buy more stuff. Look at Japan for example. At least 10 anime series are released every quarter. Some become so popular that merchandise is released and their fans buy it up.

You know what really roasts my chestnuts?

I had one of the lions that formed Voltron and two of the robots that made Devestator. There should be some kind of law you don't sell that shiat piecemeal to innocent six year olds.

Funk Brothers: Look at Japan for example. At least 10 anime series are released every quarter.

And yet new Eva and One Piece merch still outsells all of them.

You go to Akihabara, you can find the latest and greatest sexy Rei and Robin figures in the front row street level UFO catchers, and they ain't there for the tourists because it's the same in every game center.

Meanwhile, the newest animation series are the same as the old ones. The characters even look alike. No one can follow which is which.

There's also been a shift between the low-end toys (let's face it, we aren't the target demographic) towards the midrange collectibles like Funko's "totally not Derpy just a grey pony that happens to like muffins..."

s14.postimg.org

If you're a toy retailer, concentrate on the toys' target demograhpic: kids and their parents. If you're targeting hipsters and geeks, you're not in the toy business, you're in the fashion business. Retailers like Hott Topic, who catered to the older crowd, understood that.

Side note: The odds of any particular toy becoming an investment who's value is contingent on its remaining in a sealed box is about as slim as the odds of a modern-day comic book becoming the 2050s equivalent of Action Comics #1: none at all. Fer cryin' out loud, you're a grown adult who's watched "Toy Story," and you oughta know that mass-produced toys were meant to be played with, even if "played with" means "sitting on your monitor at work" or posing with a bottle of beer every once in a while.)

Speaking as a brony, but not as a serious collector, if I were to pick up a piece or two for my collection, I'd just find an artist whose work I liked and pick up some customs. Here are some pieces I found within 30 seconds of random googling.

www.tomopop.com
www.artfire.comi130.photobucket.com

The serious collector market for any fandom gravitates to the custom/crafter market because there are some incredibly crafty and talented people out there, and it doesn't matter whether they work with a 3D printer, Sculpey polymer clay, a needle and thread, a blindbag toy and some paint, or all of the above.

www.tomopop.com

And it doesn't matter if it's WH40K figurines, MLP, or... why not both?

I was in Akihabara last March. A had a great time checking out all the Sofmap stores with figurines. It was extremely busy on Sunday. I should practice more on those UFO Catchers, but I did get something with all the Yen I put in slots.

The funny thing is you can go to Nakano and pick up the full set of figures from the Otaku shops for the price to took you to get that. But it's not the figure, it's the thrill of the take.

Personally, I'm pissed there hasn't been any pony merch in the UFO catchers. They have the show. It's airing. Of course, in Japan talking animals is for even younger kids than MLP in the states, so it really hasn't taken off, but I was hoping to score something.

Caught sight of this in the wild.

To understand why My Little Pony has it's own following amongst male adults, get some Tom Waits. MLP is authentically happy. Meanwhile, Tom Waits is the sort of music that reminds you why the slits go down the wrist, not across.

Not saying you shouldn't know Tom Waits, just you need perspective. He could do "friendship is tragic".

Not surprising. After the "Derpy Fiasco", 2. Making one of the main characters into some "all of the above" Alicorn, and 3. making human versions of the characters, Brony fandom has pretty much plummeted like Lance Armstrong's product endorsement schedule.
