Bah, music preferences are completely subjective and subject to fluctuation.  I've been a big fan of Rush, Neil Young, Spirit of the West, Blue Rodeo, The Hip and Barenaked Ladies in the past.

Right now I really like Whitehorse, Radio Radio and The Zolas.  My favourite band right now is Mother Mother.  Here`s Let`s Fall in Love.

the greatest kanuckistani music stars are the ones that left the protectionist haven of kanuckistan and went to the U.S.A. to create music in the free market.

Today you learned: Canadian recording artists were owed $8 billion by the kanuckistan copyright maffiaa from repackaging music and mini-pops. The 'artists' settled for about $60 million and now live a life of luxury with unlimited poutine from the dumpster.

I was listening to Shakespeare my Buttas I read this.  Spooky.  LoTL and Ron Hawkins were and are one of the most criminally underrated bands of the '90s.  I had occasion to do a few shows with them along the way when I used to book live music, great guys, too.

There are a lot of great Canadian music, but if I had to crown a champion, I really would have to go with Randy Bachman.  He's still takin' care of business.

TFA: Who is your single favorite band or artist to come from Canada?

Those are two entirely different questions.

In the second category, in addition to those already listed in the thread, I'll throw Bif Naked, Paul Brandt, Great Big Sea, 54-40, Wide Mouth Mason, and Bedouin Soundclash into the mix.

I think part of the reason they don't get the recognition they deserve is because there was a while that their music wasn't available in stores. 15 years ago I was working in a record store in BC and it was frustrating telling people we couldn't even special order any of their stuff because they didn't have a current distribution deal. Fortunately, they do now.

I won't argue the best - because Rush, Neil Young have existed, but Sloan should've enjoyed some commercial success in the US and never did.

The aforementioned Money City Maniacs melts faces.

I'm actually on the greatest hits live album. At the beginning of Money City Maniacs, you can hear a faint "kakakaka-KA". That's me.

Other great Canadian bands:
- Change of Heart
- C'Mon
- Whitey Houston
- Tricky Woo

Ehhh, never been a Rush fan. Never found them bad, just... weird.

And Ayn Rand is terrible.

bucket_chemist: Sloan had two decent songs one year in the mid-90s. Not even close. Hell, Lee Aaron had more commercial success.

CSB: One drunken night in Vancouver in the late 90s me and the boys stumbled into a dive bar and found Lee Aaron singing jazz piano. Pete kept shouting "Play Metal Queen!" between rounds until they threw us out and we went on to the next dive bar. She was still hot in the bod but not so much in the face. /CSB

Sloan had more than two songs, but I understand they're power pop so most people can't tell the difference between any of their albums, but if  you don't know this album you don't know Sloan:

Loves me some SAGA.

/also a Rush fan

HELL YEAH! Definitely one of the most underrated bands in prog. And kudos to the guy who mentioned Devin Townsend (interviewed him for chaindlk.net a few years back, very laid back person oddly enough). 'Deconstruction', his new one is INSANE!!!

They're not a farking surf band, though.

First head Sport Fishin' at Musiplex (or was it Metroplex?) in Winnipeg back in the early 90s. Cool store, first time I had ever seen listening stations, though Toronto's music stores eventually got them shortly afterward. I had already heard  Having An Average Weekend, of course,

I was fortunate enough to get two of the Phono-comb releases, as well (Monsters... and Fresh Gasoline).

Rush is extremely overrated.

The greatest rockstar to come out of Canada, or that will ever come out of Canada, is Alex Tribeck.

TRIVIA! The lyrics to the song "Penpals" are excerpts from fan letters written to Kurt Cobain.

EXPO '86:
"Anselmi stripped off his shirt and jeans and performed in a pair of boxers, occasionally "poking through" the front as he adjusted his underwear; at the end of the set, Hamm dropped his shorts to his knees and, with arms raised in triumph, said goodbye to the audience while naked from the waist down."
