Just in time for Israel to start a war with Syria and Iran.

Looks like they had a nice flat site to work from.

Being in Central Indiana, I feel pretty safe now.

We might need them to hurry up and get those in the field.
I've got a feeling there isn't much time till the next spat.

You mean to tell me it can shoot down an F-4 flying in a straight line?

I'm pretty sure you can do that with an SA-2.

What I was going to say.  The enemies against which this system would be deployed may or may not be flying F-4 drones.  Early tests for the Patriot and other systems may or may not have been proven later to be rigged and dishonest.

But let's kick in a hundred billion to start researching the next generation after this.  I mean, there's no telling how long it will be before this technology gets into the wrong hands, for example by Congress permitting the manufacturer to sell it to the wrong hands, so we need to keep America safe, but of course we have a spending problem, so we'd better cut taxes and raise the retirement ago to 75.  Let's face it, if you're 50 years old, and you think back over the events of the past 20 years, and you're considering the threats to your own welfare in the foreseeable future, it would be absurd to imagine that having to work until 75 could pose any threat to you, I mean, who has anything like chronic health problems or other difficulties that get in the way of working before you hit 80?

No, you're thinking, the one threat that really stands out is the danger of an F-4 drone buzzing your house.  Well, that and the only-too-real possibility that the record profits for corporations in the past several years won't be enough to enable job creators to continue to employ you until you hit 75, so we need to eliminate taxes for them, and get rid of this ridiculous notion that employers should for some reason pay for part of your health insurance, or even worse, part of your social security, I mean, let's face it, if you're working until you're 75, you will collect almost nothing on social security anyway, so it's only fair that you kick in that amount yourself.

Then imagine the kinds of mind-boggling obsolete-drone-killing freedom technology we can come up with.

And we are in debt how much and why?

Quick close the parks and museums to save money.

True...but the Iron Dome is more for projectiles I thought, not aircraft.

But Iran isn't worried...don't they have that fancy stealth fighter?!?

Israel orders two. Installs system. Accidentally presses launch button for 2 nukes instead. U.S. ignores the genocide and sends an extra Billion dollars in aid.

I'm pretty sure the test of this new system was that it could engage multiple targets in a 360 degree area. While movies, books, imaginations may make this seem trivial, it is actually a very difficult function for a SAM system. Usually it is overcome by having multiple SAMs but it seems like they made this SAM to act as multiple SAMs. Like most tests, they probably put together the simplest scenario to show as proof of concept.

pff

Not sexy enough.  Patriots went BANGzchszzzzooooooooooooo.   These things look like bottle rockets.
The fighter wasn't carrying ECM and throwing chaff, the missile shared trajectory.  Fail test.

You hear it and its already half-way to the target sexy.

"sexy launch"  the old ICBM interceptors like the 53T6 Gazelle (sprint)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlQ4K5DbSq0   This is the missile system that terrified Russian missile command.  Fast enough to catch and destroy their best units in their boost stage and rain plutonium down in their own country.

How much per launch?

Russia is going to be pissed off that we're making unlicensed knock-offs of their S-400 system.

First of all, it looks like the United States isn't buying this system as a whole anymore, and Germany, Italy, and other foreign buyers are on the fence.

Second, this thing isn't designed to shoot down ballistic missiles (other than short-range ones), so unless you're concerned about Iran invading one of its neighbors (or you want to invade Iran), this shouldn't bother them too much. Here's a bit more information on the program (although organization of the page is a clusterfark).

Is Lockheed selling these to Georgia? I don't see why the Russians might be unhappy otherwise.

It's for both. Generally speaking if you build a system which can intercept a missile then intercepting an aircraft will be well within its capabilities.

Israel and the US also worked together on laser-based rocket/mortar/missile defenses. We discontinued the program a few years ago, but not until after the tech performed pretty impressively in some rather amazing tests (seriously, the prototype shot down farking artillery shells in flight!). I am going to go out on a limb here and throw out a wild guess that the program was discontinued because it's a lot more lucrative for influential contractors to sell interceptor missiles to do the same task - but that cost a small van full of money to replace every time you fire one off. There have been numerous calls for the system to be worked on again.

But Iran isn't worried...don't they have that fancy stealth fighter?!?

Unless you are preparing the weapons to fight the next war you will need to wage now, you will lose that next war.
