FTFA: Although many religious people want to marry someone of the same faith, the issue is particularly complicated for Jews:

To be more correct, its a particularly complicated issue for any non-missionary tradition where perpetuation of the culture/religion is tied to the family. Its equally complicated for Hindus and Sikhs, for example. Also members of indigenous traditions. Much less so for Buddhists, Christians and Muslims who are from missionary traditions.

I wouldn't think this is a bad thing.  Yes, your ethnicity gets diversified and diluted.  Oh no, that sounds...  Horrible?  Wait, isn't that what white supremacists are always screaming about, and we dismiss them as hateful  loons?  Granted, these Jewish leaders are saying it much nicer, but aren't they still arguing against diversifying the ethnic roots?

Over the top and borderline offensive comparisons aside, I would think having a varied ethnic background in your religion would not be a bad thing, especially when you are a historically maligned group like the Jews.  It's harder for some nutjob with a hate boner to blame your religion or ethnicity for something when many of your religion and shared ethnicity is from THEIR shared background.  It won't stop all of them, obviously, but it may soften the impact a bit with the masses when their sister-in-law or great grandpa is Jewish.

So I'm on a second date with this Jewish girl.  We end up at Whataburger and I, of course, order a #5 with extra crispy bacon.  She looks at me like I just killed a pig.  Then, as if by cue, she orders a #5 no pickles.

I'm not sure how that's even possible when contemporary Jews already look like practically every race of the world.

Jews should really stop fearing what has already happened.

She was probably horrified that you went to a fast food burger joint for a second date, rather than spending a few sheckels for a decent sit-down meal. Also, did she order a cheeseburger? Because that wouldn't be any more kosher (eating the cow with the milk of its mother) than eating bacon.

I think the main problem is the conversion attitudes Rabbis have. Such as, obsolete ideas about persecution by non-Jewish governments where freedom of religion is practiced (which is the excuse some Rabbis give to a genuinely interested gentile, when they don't want to convert people; this doesn't include the practice of the Rabbi turning the gentile away 3 times to see if the person is honest about their intentions about converting). Especially the Orthodox who put converts through so many restrictions on getting through the door, then having the threat of having your conversion "overturned" (which has no basis in Jewish law) because you may own a TV or even if your Rabbi did something to piss off the Rabbinical Council (which had nothing to do with you). If they want less intermarriage, then they need to help non-Jews convert and teach them the values the Rabbis want the future convert to practice without artificial hurdles in place.

Any Jewish woman that I've gone out with / dated / hung out with as friends, whom have specifically told me that they would have a hard time seriously dating anyone who wasn't Jewish - are the most boring, self absorbed and over analyzing people I have ever met.

Other women, who are fun and great to hang out with, who don't particularly care what religion anyone else has chosen, and are Jewish, and don't keep their Jewishness front and center of over single conversation, are fantastic and awesome people.

It's just one more thing to be neurotic about - and if you're indoctrinated into believing that you are special, and you can only spend time with you own very special type of people - that's not a winning move for a happy social life.  It's really a shame kids are being trained to be fixated on that.

Except the article talks about the culture and religion being tied closely to their ethnicity. Which is kind of bullshiat. If it was about the culture and religion alone, it makes no sense to not bring more people into the fold.

It's a silly thing regardless. My wife is a life long Lutheran, went to private school to that effect and everything, and I am about as atheist as they come. I made it clear there would be no conversion to get married, but agreed to marry in her church. The elders tried to shut it down until the pastor went to bat for us (he was a good sort), by my wife never had any moment were she ever questioned me or tried to convert me.

Been together 15 years now, still good. Though she does get upset sometimes when the kids ask me why I don't believe in God and I'm... You know, truthful.
