Is this any worse than having to have a Facebook account to post comments on a website?

2013-11-09 03:26:08 AM
I would've been more inclined to use Google+ if it would have let me sort things chronologically by the original thing posted rather than what thing has the most recent comments.

2013-11-09 03:34:22 AM
I don't care about Google+ and I don't care about Facebook. I DO care about YouTube but I don't read the comments, other than what the OP wrote as a caption. I was very irritated by Google's insistence on my getting my name changed and since I don't post or read comments on YouTube it was doubly irritating.
Why do they even allow comments? Do they add any value to the site?

2013-11-09 03:45:12 AM
1% of YouTube comments are valuable.

The other 99% should only be used to identify who should be killed to make the world a better place.

2013-11-09 03:48:01 AM
Considering gmail a while ago kind of baked google+ stuff into its sign in as well it doesn't affect me in the slightest. All I really hear from this is "Guy who sold product to another company biatches about what other company does with it," weee...

Feedly also screwed up something with their google auth either. Making it use google+ instead of regular google accounts.

oh hell yes!

2013-11-09 04:16:12 AM
Huh. I thought I was the only who thought this new YT commenting system sucks. They even changed the way you rate a video. You have to "rent" it first. WTF is that?

2013-11-09 04:22:55 AM
So I started using this extension to improve the comments on YT:

google's business model is rapidly turning itself into something everyone on the internet hates

yes, we know you're a verb now but will ask jeeves have the final revenge?

2013-11-09 06:08:06 AM
I HATE THIS NEW COMMENTING SYSTEM ON YOUTUBE THAT MAKES ME USE A NAME THAT SOUNDS VAGUELY REAL!

IT MAKES ME SO ANGRY I'M GOING TO GO ON GMAIL AND GTALK, AND TELL ALL MY FRIENDS TO WATCH, LIKE, AND COMMENT ON MY YOUTUBE VIDEO ABOUT HOW MUCH YOUTUBE SUCKS.

/I've got an idea, If you can't make up a fake farking name that passes google+'s filters and a dummy email account, make your own wildly successful video sharing website / marketing juggernaut.

Grand_Moff_Joseph: Good!  This forced integration is a bunch of BS.

To be fair, partially de-anonymizing youtube comments (at least connecting them in most cases to an actual e-mail account that someone uses, so that to troll you have to actually set up a whole troll account and the numbers may be manageable enough to just to ban-hammer sweeps) is probably the only thing G+ has done that  isn't  redundant and/or stupid.

2013-11-09 06:47:19 AM
Now that it's no longer 2004 and Gmail isn't the only mail hosting site that gives you more than 10mb of storage, I'm considering dumping Gmail because I'm sick of Google behaving like....well a publicly traded company, instead of the Google I used to know.

Any kind farkers have recommendations on a better mail host?

Can I just add that even if G+ were not such a wasteland, it would still suck? The UI layout is catastrophically bad to the point of unreadable. I've never seen so much whitespace deployed to so little effect. I can remember 1970s mimeographed newsheets for D&D games that were better laid out.

A+++ would Opt In again.

2013-11-09 07:10:34 AM
The "threaded" comments don't even seem to be threaded, since you can't really follow an exchange at all. You get a +NAME to indicate who someone is replying to, but clicking that brings you to their Google+ page and not to the actual comment being addressed!

Under the old system you had "In reply to (NAME)" or whatever at the bottom of the comment. Clicking that would show the parent comment and you could follow that up the conversation tree as far as you care to. Now the best you can do it view a huge list of unsorted comments under a single parent node.

What a load of horsesh*t.

Suckmaster Burstingfoam: 1% of YouTube comments are valuable.

Honestly, giving people the means to out themselves as a waste of resources is very valuable, so all Youtube comments are of equal worth.

BizarreMan: Is this any worse than having to have a Facebook account to post comments on a website?

No, but the sites that use Facebook integration generally do so because they're smaller and don't have the means do build their own user database and commenting feature.  Facebook integration is just easier from their end.  YouTube on the other hand easily has the means to support an independent commenting system, and also an extremely large number of users.

Anyway, I can't bring myself to feel strongly about the switch.  Sure, Google+ is annoying, but YouTube comments are literally the dumbest thing on the internet, and anything that cleans up that nightmare is fine by me.

About the same. I don't have a Facebook  or twitter account.  Do have Gmail only to get onto youtube.

May have to breakdown and do Facebook as many business websites are using Facebook.

I agree.  The biggest thing which keeps me from even attempting to mess with Google+ is it is confusing in every aspect.  It is more unintuitive than MySpace was and has become.  What makes it worse is how they are trying to force you to use it just to use basic services like Gmail and YouTube. It is really annoying.

Makes me wonder if this forced integration has anything to do with the resurgence of Yahoo.

I don't care much about YouTube, but the Google+ crap has already driven me away from Picasaweb (where I was a paying user).

2013-11-09 09:33:00 AM
I've been fighting the "Use your name!" thing for a long time.

Names are so... impersonal.  They have no staying power.  There's a million Steves and Bills and Daves and Maries and so forth.  It's so easily forgettable.  Usernames are much more easy to remember, and they're all unique.  (I know FOUR "Dave Jones" in real life.  How many are there online?)

In short, fark you Google.

2013-11-09 09:34:51 AM
Yeah, this Google+ requirement is getting ridiculous. I can no longer use my YouTube inbox to look at new comments on my videos - I now get "notifications" on Google+. WTF?

Thanks, Google, for screwing up YouTube.

That's annoying as well. I do NOT want to use my real name, for good reason... there are a lot of insane people on the internet. I have a video that makes fun of Iran's space program... and even though I classified it under "Comedy" there are people who think I posted it as a serious depiction of their space program. I don't really need Islamist terrorists tracking me down for "insulting" their favorite theocracy.

It's a noble sacrifice. The existence of YouTube comments keeps someplace else from becoming the biggest pile of derp on the planet.

I've been told that blocking cookies for youtube.com and www.youtube.com stops it from bugging the shiat out of you over switching to your real name. So far, so good.

Also, why the hell isn't there a no button for that question so it will stop bothering the hell out of you?

I'm still not over Google killing off Picasa and feeding the carcass to G+

Not to mention the mutilation of Google Docs into Google Drive. No, I'm not going to install software just so I can copy and paste within an online document. Because it's no longer an online document at that point.

Is it bad that Microsoft is now doing cloud computing better than Google?

I don't understand why social hates time stamps and chronological order.

See also Facebook constantly reverting your view to "News" Feed instead of Most Recent, which also randomly shows things out of order anyway because fark you and your clock. And Twitter's new blue inline conversation thing, which reverses the reading order of the tweets within the conversation.

YouTube gets worse & worse. Each update removes useful features and adds in stupid design changes.

Finally created a Vimeo account. Not as much content there but seems like google is determined to push people to Vimeo.

Social Fixer is your friend on that one.

However, I grant you it is only one of the many ways in which social sites think you don't know what you want, only they know what you want.

Unfortunately, Social Fixer got pretty well de-balled recently, because Facebook was threatening the guy with a lawsuit for blocking "sponsored posts" and actually forcing the "Most Recent" sort setting to only show the most recent posts.  It'll still keep your feed permanently set to "Most Recent," but it's Facebook's definition of "most recent," which is why a post a friend of mine made  over a year ago somehow found its way back to the top of my feed the other day.

youtube sadly needs to go the way of myspace.  a better substitute needs to take hold in popularity -- but eventually not become Farcebook either.  in the likelihood meter ratings im guessing negative eleventy billion.  but one can hope.

/deleted my youtube account yesterday
//after porting my gmail contacts it is next

2013-11-09 03:04:14 PM
My biggest issue with all of this is that back when Gmail came out, I made three accounts for myself - One for family/friends, one for business/bills/shopping, and one for job-hunting. I attached a Google+ presence only to the first one. Now Google is pushing me relentlessly to have three G+ identities all with my real name on them. And on top of that, my YouTube acount, which I made long before Google took over, isn't even attached to a Gmail; it's an ancient AOL address. Do I have to make yet another G+ account in order for that identity to interact there, now? It's like all of the phone companies suddenly recombining back into Ma Bell and then deciding that your home, work and mobile numbers all have to be the same now.

Plus, in the time between my last two visits to my G+ account, the user experience there has become a wildly nonintuitive mess. Any notion I might have had about shifting my social network to G+ from Facebook has faded away.

Seriously, Google. Don't you remember your motto: Don't be evil?

This is evil.

Google+ is not going to happen. It's just not. You can't be #1 in every aspect of the Internet. Just let this one go. Stop trying to force it on people through every other site and service you acquire.

Now often a federal offense, under the name of "hacking" (accessing a system in violation of its ToS or without authorization).
