Yeah, well, while we're at it, why do you Yanks say "appricot?"  It should have a long A, like April.

Erom: pee-kahn here in central michigan.

Same here. Um, usually. Both pee-KAN and pee-KAHN sound right to me, but the latter sounds better.
Mid-Michigan born and raised.

Not that this means much. I prefer the word soda to the word pop. Flows off the tongue better. Conscious linguistic decisions are fun.

And pee-KAHNs are delicious!

In some of the southern American dialect, the emphasis is on the first syllable.  This was explained that if you ordered a two scoop ice cream cone, it would be pronounced as "Pee-can" Ripple and "Budderpeecahn", which is properly pronounced as a single word.  A helpful enunciation guide is that you should be able to converse through clenched teeth.

Huh, I grew up close to but not in one of the lightish blue areas ("pick-AHN"), and that is the pronunciation that I have always used. I had also assumed that was the pronunciation used by the majority of the country.

Actually, no, everyone else is still wrong. "pick-AHN" for life!

My family grows pecans on a family farm in South Georgia, and take it from me. In the industry, it's pronounced "pee-can." Also, they're expensive because larger growers essentially set the price to screw others out of a profit.

The "enigmatic" pecan? LOLWUT? They're not very enigmatic, as far as nuts are concerned. If I'd had to pick an enigmatic nut, it's probably be cashews, because they stick out the end of those weird red fruits.
