I know two things without a doubt; first never get into a land war in Asia and second, never listen to 4 and a half hours of Sarah Palin talking about anything.

Judging by the quotes there, it seems that Atheist are amazingly powerful in America.  I mean there are currently all of 0 in the house of representatives with another staggering 0 in the senate while having been able to control the executive branch all of 1 times (I count Jefferson).  With that kind of clout in Washington you can bet your bottom dollar that it is going to be open season on Christianity.  Not to mention all the other religions in power in our government like muslims with their equal number of 0.

What she either fails to understand or is intentionally obfuscating is that much of the opposition to the faux righteous crowd that promulgates this nonsense, that their are Christians out there that DO NOT AGREE with them at all and find there message to be short on theology but long on self righteous entitlement pride grounded in tribalism.

Really, think about it, what would her reaction be if some poor guy born in the projects started traveling around with a group of similarly poor people talking about how today's religious leaders were all wrong.  He was always talking about giving to the poor and sacrificing and self denial and did I mention giving to the poor.  He would do this all over and sometimes right in their face.  He physically attacked those that turned worship into a commercial enterprise, and socialized with the worst kind of people.

What would you really think Sarah Palin would have to say about that man?  My bet is he could tap dance across water, and raise the dead but it wouldn't matter because clearly he must be evil because he didn't agree with them so ... well something must be done...

I hate to legitimize anything Sarah Palin has to say by responding to it, but here's the thing:

When the religious talk about all the people atheism has killed, they are talking about all the people who are atheists and who have killed.

When atheists talk about all the people religion has killed, they're talking about the the people who are religious, and who have killed other people for believing in the wrong religion or no religion.

That's the difference.  Sure, history's worst Communist dictators were atheists and killed people, sometimes because those people had religion, but mostly because they failed to live up to the communist ideal, generally. If we held religious authorities to the same standard, then maybe 98% of all the murders in history could be blamed on religion because they were committed by someone who believed in some god.  Atheists usually don't paint with so broad of a brush.  It's enough that religious authorities have killed, and continue to kill, countless individuals based solely on differences in religious faith.  That's special.  That's scary.

Technically, the USA is older than all but two countries in Europe when you take into account how shiat got changed around from WW1 to the fall of communism.

Ummm...in no particular order

Spain
Portugal
England
France
Italy
Vatican

All are older countries than USA. Some of the Nordic countries probably qualify as do the likes of Iceland and greenland. Germany/Belgium are probably in the running too.

Nope.  With the exception of England, all of those countries (I don't count the Vatican) have undergone fundamental changes in their entire system of government in recent history.

o_O

So that makes them not "countries"??? Nice try, but just because France went from a monarchy to a parliamentary system since 1787 doesn't somehow make it a "newer" country than America. They may have newer governments; but the political, economic and social entities have been firmly in place for well over a thousand years.

11 million Christians were killed by other Christians during the European wars between Protestants and Catholics. 20 million died in the Taiping Rebellion because missionaries thought it would be a good idea to introduce Christianty to China and a born-again local declared himself the new Jesus. 3 million total died in the Middle East Crusades. 1 million were murdered in France during the Albigensian Crusade because they believed God was actually more loving and good than His depiction in the Bible.

Sarah Palin's understanding of Christianity extends to the last 5% of its lifespan. The other 95% would have flayed her alive, speared her like a fish, roasted her over a fire and made her watch them eat her liver while praising the true Christian faith, God Willed It.

She should be thankful Christianity became tolerant enough to let her become so ignorantly intolerant.

Palin's not a believer. Palin is a *follower*.

She hasn't the ability to process any of the complex questions being asked, so she doesn't have the ability to formulate beliefs. She's simply spent her life trying to be popular with her small-town churches by memorizing all of the catch-phrases she's expected to know in order to move up in the social pecking order.

So THAT's why modern evangelical Christianity teaches it's followers that the reason people don't follow their particular brand of religious belief is that they hate their God, and everything they stand for/how "successful" they are. AND why it's taught to children from a very small age that anyone who questions their belief is in league with the ultimate evil.

Thanks, netweavr, I never understood the hypocrisy of denouncing other religious for "attacking non-believers" until now!

Honestly, she's right.  Guilty as charged.  Even though I'm not an atheist, I get an absolute thrill from wishing everyone "Happy Holidays!" or "Seasons Greetings!", just so I can see who it drives nuts.  A normal or rational person simply smiles, maybe waves, and sometimes returns the sentiment.  But when you hit on a conservative, especially a "born-again" or evangelical, it's comedy gold.  At the very minimum, you'll get a flat smile, a quivering lip, or a twitchy eye.  If you're really lucky, they'll come unglued and go full retard on the spot.  It's a priceless gift that only comes once a year; a perfectly polite, wholesome, and friendly phrase that at the same time causes those who have been driving you nuts all year long to have a stroke.  So, Sarah, from the bottom of my heart: "Seasons Greetings!", "Happy Holidays!", "Happy New Year!",  and, "All the Best in the Coming Year!"

People have been trying to moralize selfishness for a long time. They know they are self centered, but want us to not think negatively about them. Basically wanting to have the cake and eat it too. Evidently this 5th grader struck a nerve. You do understand the difference between believing in poorcku's particular god and exhibiting religious behavior, yes?

My premise still stands. In order to do what they did, the true monsters of history had to use the same behaviors that we usually call religion, they just used "The State" or "The Revolution" as the ideal rather than Allah or Yaweh. It's fashionable for people to say "well, they stomped on existing religions and therefore were atheists!" when in reality they just changed the name of the god.

If there is anything inaccurate in my chart, I'd be happy to hear you point it out.

In her defense, she is such an empty-headed nitwit that it is unlikely she has any idea of what the Inquisition was.  Her home-school textbook probably says something like:

The Inquisition: An era when atheists and socialists tricked a small number of honest Christians into mildly persecuting some other Christians, until they finally got wise to the cunning plans of atheist socialists.  Scientists agree that if the atheists had been burned instead, Jesus would have come back by now.

VOCABULARY REVIEW

persecuting: Making good people feel bad (see "lamestream media")
cunning: Smart in a bad way (see "science")

They were foaming at the mouth for sure in USSR, Albania, Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Cambodia etc. Because their atheist state was kind enough to make sure of that.

And before you start the "but those were not atheist states" - derp, I was born in one and grew up in an atheist state who shot the priests in my grandmothers village. And razed churches that were over 500 years old. And forbade any form of religious practice because it was a threat to communist propaganda (the opium of the people and all that)

But yeah, what the f do I know.

Unless there is some reason that communists couldn't have been as brutal as they were unless they were atheists, it's irrelevant.
Neither atheism nor religion are necessary components in human brutality - so the only discussion possible seems to be a childish "Well, you guys are bad TOO!" type of argument. OK if that gets you off, I guess.

It's the free thinkers versus the dogmatists, and it always has been. Look at the old eastern bloc; freedom of speech either very restricted to outright non existent, homosexuality condemned as "deviant", parallel after parallel with the religious right in this country (both then and now). Communists, Taliban, Inquisitors, all used the same methods, all were utterly certain of being correct. Authoritarian types cannot abide the uncertainty of non dogmatic thinking, and they will find some cause to rally around. The actual dogma itself almost seems unimportant - look at how many people in this country right now will defend the bible as "sacred", even though they've read little to none of it.

Given that European countries try to invoke the supposed youth of the USA when arguing politics, the duration of a stable system of government is quite relevant.

miss diminutive: - Let's think this through: Without God as an objective standard, who's to say what's wrong and what's right?

The logical result of atheism, a result we have seen right in front of our eyes in one of the world's oldest and proudest nations, is severe moral decay.

Palin's a believer, and it did help her slide into moral decay.

Ground Zero Mosque supporters: doesn't it stab you in the heart, as it does ours throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate
