wax_on: Gonna keep posting this is every Palin thread until it catches on and the whole thread is filled with "can't we just ignore her" comments and nobody bothers to click the link at all.

Someone promises that she'll go away if we just ignore her in every Palin thread. It doesn't work.

Darth Macho: 20 million died in the Taiping Rebellion because missionaries thought it would be a good idea to introduce Christianty to China and a born-again local declared himself the new Jesus.

Heh, that would have been fun to witness:

Hong Xiuquan: I'M THE BROTHER OF JESUS!

Missionaries: No, wait, I don't think you quite understood what...

One Million Chinese: LORD HONG!

Missionaries: Maybe we should be going now...

Palin's a believer, and it did help her slide into moral decay.

Technically, the USA is older than all but two countries in Europe when you take into account how shiat got changed around from WW1 to the fall of communism.

Ummm...in no particular order

Spain
Portugal
England
France
Italy
Vatican

All are older countries than USA. Some of the Nordic countries probably qualify as do the likes of Iceland and greenland. Germany/Belgium are probably in the running too.

Nope.  With the exception of England, all of those countries (I don't count the Vatican) have undergone fundamental changes in their entire system of government in recent history.

o_O

So that makes them not "countries"??? Nice try, but just because France went from a monarchy to a parliamentary system since 1787 doesn't somehow make it a "newer" country than America. They may have newer governments; but the political, economic and social entities have been firmly in place for well over a thousand years.

This is a dangerous book that should not be read by true Christians. It investigates the history of the birth of our lord and savior Jesus Christ. When Christians are done reading it, it could lead them to read other books about the history of Christmas. That is when they could be lead down a dark path filled with feasts, dancing, and paganism. My advice is to stay away from this gateway book. Zero stars.

jigger:Anyway, was Palin talking about the US as being one of the oldest and proudest? For a second I thought she meant China. Not only is it basically the oldest nation on Earth

The PRC is less than a century old.  The US is ancient compared to China.

Yes, they have really old buildings... so does the US, in New Mexico.  Not the same thing as the culture being old.  China murdered the living shiat out of everyone contributing to the old culture during their revolution, that's why they have no noticeable academic community even today.

I hate to legitimize anything Sarah Palin has to say by responding to it, but here's the thing:

When the religious talk about all the people atheism has killed, they are talking about all the people who are atheists and who have killed.

When atheists talk about all the people religion has killed, they're talking about the the people who are religious, and who have killed other people for believing in the wrong religion or no religion.

That's the difference.  Sure, history's worst Communist dictators were atheists and killed people, sometimes because those people had religion, but mostly because they failed to live up to the communist ideal, generally. If we held religious authorities to the same standard, then maybe 98% of all the murders in history could be blamed on religion because they were committed by someone who believed in some god.  Atheists usually don't paint with so broad of a brush.  It's enough that religious authorities have killed, and continue to kill, countless individuals based solely on differences in religious faith.  That's special.  That's scary.

The thing that makes my ears twist here is that the notion of modern moral decay is pretty much constant. Everyone is convinced that right now things are much worse than they were back then. This is a woman who, unconsciously or otherwise, thinks the country had a better moral center when blacks couldn't vote.

According to Matthew White, there have been a total of 455 million people killed through wars, oppression, ethnic strife and or war-caused famine/disease. Of those, 47 million are the result of religious causes (holy wars, ritual killings, heretical persecution, etc.). Communist-led governments are responsible for 67 million deaths.

Communism isn't a religion.

Bertrand Russell, life long socialist, and strong believer in the Russian revolution (until he actually visited the country in 1920), disagreed.

Bolshevism is not merely a political doctrine; it is also a religion, with elaborate dogmas and inspired scriptures. When Lenin wishes to prove some proposition, he does so, if possible, by quoting texts from Marx and Engels. A full-fledged Communist is not merely a man who believes that land and capital should be held in common, and their produce distributed as nearly equally as possible. He is a man who entertains a number of elaborate and dogmatic beliefs-such as philosophic materialism, for example-which may be true, but are not, to a scientific temper, capable of being known to be true with any certainty. This habit, of militant certainty about objectively doubtful matters, is one from which, since the Renaissance, the world has been gradually emerging, into that temper of constructive and fruitful scepticism which constitutes the scientific outlook. I believe the scientific outlook to be immeasurably important to the human race.

It's the free thinkers versus the dogmatists, and it always has been. Look at the old eastern bloc; freedom of speech either very restricted to outright non existent, homosexuality condemned as "deviant", parallel after parallel with the religious right in this country (both then and now). Communists, Taliban, Inquisitors, all used the same methods, all were utterly certain of being correct. Authoritarian types cannot abide the uncertainty of non dogmatic thinking, and they will find some cause to rally around. The actual dogma itself almost seems unimportant - look at how many people in this country right now will defend the bible as "sacred", even though they've read little to none of it.
