The fingernails and the missing organs sounds more to me like the funeral home farking up. I mean at the minimum they would have noticed that the organs were missing and pointed it out or noted it somewhere.

I am so sick and tired of these conspiracy theorists with their endless questions: "Where are his organs? Why was the body moved?"

And then when you provide a reasonable answer (his organs were trying to escape his body, and he moved to try to reclaim them), they just come back with more questions.

Give it up! Life is random, and it doesn't require some kind of conspiracy theory to explain. .

I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for why a kid's bloodied dead body was found rolled up in a gym mat.

Authorities say Kendrick Johnson fell into the mat and suffocated while trying to retrieve a sneaker

Exactly.  Kids and their sneakers these days, you have to look out for mats.  They're terrible suffocation hazards with the way they automatically roll up around people.

Look, the police would love to clear this all up for everyone and the easiest way is with video or evidence on the dead body but you know how these things go.  Technology is glitchy and let's see YOU differentiate between a kidney and a newspaper, mister internet M.D.

Perhaps someone tossed his shoe into the rolled-up mat (standing vertically against the wall), and he went in after it and got stuck.  That's the most plausible explanation I can think of that would make his death an accident.

Whatever happened in the "suicide" case where a woman was found dead, hanging in her wealthy boyfriend's house with her hands tied behind her back?

I wish the coroner had better writing and grammatical acumen.  When he is spelling words like 'integrrety', it does take away from his credibility.

Again, the mats were stacked vertically, already rolled. In theory, the guy was trying to reach down into one and fell in.

There are other articles that suggest he would place/hide his shoes in the mats rather than use a locker.  There's also a suggestion that there is video of him going into the gym that day, and very few other details about what else is on that video, aside from a color guard practice.
And on a larger scale, there are articles about his town being racially divided in the old-school sense of the term.

As far as I know they didn't discover that the organs weren't there until the body was exhumed. I believe they were there during the autopsies. That part sounds like a funeral home farkup. There's obviously some sort of cover up going on.

Seriously? That's how I felt when this story first hit Fark. In theory, the kid reached down into the mat to get his shoes (he apparently frequently hid his shoes around the gym), fell in, and then got wedged in, slowly dying, hearing other people come into the gymnasium and play basketball or whatever as he died, unable to say or do anything. Pure nightmare fuel.

Obviously just a freak accident.  It could happen to anyone.  But they do need to re-examine their mat rolling policies.

2013-11-08 02:34:42 PM
Not to be contrarian or anything, but I don't think anything in this case is particularly suspicious so far.  Let's not forget the death was 10 months ago, not yesterday.  Not all police are well versed in dealing with this kind of situation, particularly if they are certain it is not a homicide and on a high school campus.  Its therefore not a surprise that evidence was not handled properly, and that the coroner was not immediately notified.  Mistakes happen.  They opened up the sealed body bag for the family- which is understandable but also a total breach of proper evidence collection.  The scene was therefore not properly handled.  This does not imply wrongdoing or a cover up.
If the police thought, through interviews with witnesses or others, that the "shoe" theory was the most likely plausible explanation for the death, it would explain why they handled the case the way they did.
I can't speak for the video, but camera footage is often grainy and out of focus.  motion-sensitive cameras are often inadequately triggered on or off.  I don't think this means anything, but an A/V expert would probably have something to say about this.

Re; the body- three coroners had their hands on this body, and I assume an autopsy was performed.  Are we to be shocked that the organs were not in the body?

What I would want to know is why this kid was in they gym by himself with no one around?  Or were there witnesses we just haven't heard about (since this story is entirely generated by the family of the deceased) who saw the kid go after his missing shoe?

The Coroner in Georgia is an elected office. There is some training required after election, IIRC, but you don't have to be a doctor. Medical examiners are hired either by the city or county (big places like Atlanta) or by the State for more rural areas. I would guess that lots of Coroners also run the funeral home.

I'm pretty sure an earlier article revealed a shady funeral home they used was responsible for the newspaper organs. The fingernails were most likely clipped during autopsy. And the video shows it was an either an accident as described or he was murdered by the Flash and an entire classroom of students that entered shortly after he did are in on the conspiracy. The sad reality is a young man died in a bizarre accident and the parents can't accept it. Even if/when the federal investigators conclude the same thing, they'll claim the same thing.

So... we have a kid who got stuck upside down in a rolled up gym mat, which would lead to bleeding out of his ears, nose and probably eyes as blood pooled after he suffocated. The first coroner is upset because of the way things were handled - mostly nitpicking, including unzipping the already-bagged body to show the father. A picture of the gym mat is blurry.

Still, it's ruled accidental, and the victim is given a funeral. Apparently, the organs are missing... the first coroner disposed of the organs or the funeral home did, and instead of using quality, pricey solutions, somebody just stuffed the body with newspaper. His fingernails were clipped, presumably because the hands were visible during the showing (crossed over chest in repose) by the mortician.

The body was buried.

6 months later, the family has it dug back up and another autopsy performed. Not surprisingly, with a body prepared by a cheap (and perhaps less-than-honest) mortician, things aren't quite right.

Still, the second autopsy cannot find any evidence of murder.

Have I got this right?

That's what I'm pulling from this.

Vanity6: You forgot the part in the article where it mentioned a neck injury caught by the second coroner. Still could minor given what we know but details peeples!!

With a chain of custody that includes a shady mortician and burying the body, outside of a bullet or a knife blade embedded in the body. there simply is nothing there.

It is possible somebody stuffed the kid inside the gym mat, but I doubt an autopsy would reveal that sort of thing. Real life isn't like "Bones" when it comes to forensic science or the skills a typical medical examiner has.

An "injury" on the neck could just as easily be the result of moving the body incorrectly or something the mortician did long after the fact.

Sadly, forensics are still not a very exact science. A good example of this is the Duke Lacrosse "rape" where doctors examined the alleged victim and declared she had been raped based on "bruising" on her genitals - which was not really bruising and just the result of her getting screwed by her boyfriend the night before. Mostly it is still just guesswork and assumptions wrapped around the label of "SCIENCE!" to get the result desired by the state, without concern for actual justice.

I feel bad these parents lost their child, but if there was somebody responsible for his death (besides himself/Darwin), they likely weren't directly responsible - i.e. some kids stuffed him in the mat as a prank, for example - so getting a conviction would be very difficult. The best they could hope for is somebody who knows what happened talking about the event. At this point, an autopsy does nothing, except confuse the issues.

Quantum entanglement. It's the only explanation.

Interview with former president of the local NAACP who investigated every aspect of the case. If you're genuinely interested in what happened.

It is amazing what a person can do when they are suicidal.

From  http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9626413/the-mysterious-death-17-y e ar-old-football-player-valdosta-georgia that Fark linked to a while back, is this (plus more info regarding the other things you mentioned in your post):

According to Georgia law, police must notify the local coroner or medical examiner immediately after discovering a dead body. In this case, they waited. The morning Kendrick was found in the school gym, Lowndes County coroner Bill Watson sat about a mile away in his office, hearing rumors of a dead body at the school and wondering what was going on. Eventually, sheriff's deputies did notify Watson. Their call came about six hours after they arrived on the scene. "This was not fair to the decedent, his family, and the citizens of Valdosta and Lowndes County, Georgia," Watson later told the Daily Times. "And it's wrong as rain. You may not want me on your crime scene, but it's a law. It's not something you can change your mind about."

pute kisses like a man: Tman144: What? How do you turn a body over to a coroner without organs? Who took the organs out?!? Are we quoting the second coroner's report?

The article could have been more clear. Did the first coroner find an organ-less body? What gives. Maybe a timeline or chronological explanation of the investigation would be nice. Either way, accidental death by gym mat sounds suspicious.

Read the above link, it seems to have a clearer timeline (I found it to be pretty informative)

OgreMagi:
If I'm not mistaken, the Sheriff's son attends the school.
