How the fark is that more helpful when you have to click on each tiny thumbnail independently to actually see the pictures?

What don't you understand? There is a pool in the enclosure and they want to be sure the kittens won't drown. The test is supervised so if a kitten can't swim they can be rescued.

Or you could have simply changed the output format at the top of the page to display the full-sized pictures:
deslided differently

or
pick your own size and have it sideways
if you're into that kind of thing
