To be perfectly fair on the "do your own research" bit, conspiracy theorists are all too aware that they poison their own wells. The fact that a source is cited by conspiracy theorists is inherently harmful to its credibility, and so citing your sources turns out to be worse than useless.

This is one of the reasons I loathe the internet.
It gave crazy uncle "fluoride in the water" Larry types some type of quasi legitimacy.

Still, I guess it was a small price to pay for the internet...

Arguing with crazies doesn't work, but I would still tell them that the crap they read on the Internet is not research.

It takes vigilance to not descend down that particular rabbit hole.

There is no bottom, and we're all susceptible, and we all think we have the ability to realize when something has gotten too crazy to be believed.

I love the "do your own research" line, because as someone paid to do research for a living I have no shortage of comebacks for that one.

Conspiracies are just that- CONSPIRACIES - wrong doing that is being hidden. Yeah - Im a conspiracy "nut" but you know what? I dont have cancer and I am not under government control. Its people like you that need to check your head. Ah. My chemtrail believing friend in a nutshell. Him: "There's proof all over YouTube". I post a link to a youtube video from a NASA expert factually disputing chemtrail claims: "you're using YouTube as proof! What a laugh!"

First one is troll, second one serious.

The Dunning Kruger effect more than explains a lot about conspiracy theorists.

"Dunning and Kruger proposed that, for a given skill, incompetent people will:
1) Tend to overestimate their own level of skill;
2) Fail to recognize genuine skill in others;
3) Fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy;
4) Recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill, if they are exposed to training for that skill."

This of course applies to research as well, something that, at least for me, was not really taught until I was well into college.  Oh sure, you're taught the basics of looking up citations, but not how to evaluate a good source from a bad source.

Add in the natural resistance we all have to being told "You're wrong", and *bam*, conspiracy theorists.

I have several in my life, coworkers, friends, and family members.  At least my crazy conspiracy coworker can keep their anger in check.  I've had friends and family start yelling and screaming at me when I even remotely indicated I was dubious about their assertions.

Sometimes these blog articles make me want to track down the author's Journalism/English teachers and punch them repeatedly in the face.

No information, theme barely thought out at all, cutesy rambling babble style. It's like having lunch with one of those people who just don't ever stop talking, even when they have nothing to say.

I see all the shills from BIG FARKare out in force today trying to diminish the very REAL and LEJITIMETE concerns that patriotic citizens have over their own safety, life, and liberty.  Fluoride isn't the only thing in our water, people.   This video evidence cannot be denied, "they|" are putting *something* in {there} that ═they═  don't want >us< to know about.

Yeah, just did this yesterday. No thanks.

Hurr, durr, conspiracy! Of morality.

Most of the big planned consipiracies didn't happen because Alex Jones was there to tell us about them. He's stopped literally hundreds of horrible planned conspiracies just by bring them to light before they could happen.

Really, I think they need treatment, once they reach the "inventing ways 2 conspiracies interact" level of conspiracy theorist.   That's the first sign they're seeking some kind of validation for themselves as people.  Anyone can have an incorrect belief by taking things at face value(and refusing to take other things as such), but when they start wiring them together in their head, there's a symptom of broken mental circuitry.

There is one reason and one reason only that most conspiracy theories are BS. People simply cannot keep their mouths shut. The more people that know about it, or involved in it, the quicker it leaks out cause someone just can't wait to tell someone about "The Big Secret" .

Yes, but real conspiracies are boring.
They are along the lines of "I'll bribe you with this money if you do X for me"  "OK, deal".
Not so much "Let's put secret symbols on the dollar bill and hide aliens in Antarctica"

Oswald shot and killed JFK.
Not "boring" but not more interesting than John Wilkes Booth shooting Lincoln.
Let's say he hypothetically had a pal take shots at JFK with him - a pal who got away - possible though unlikely - still very mundane.
You start going off the rails when you actually believe things with no evidence and create your own scenarios.
If you think *blank* killed JFK then you can start filling in the blank with anything you want and you might as well start praying to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
