I think these pressure groups rejoice when they come across something they can be publicly offended at. Without that attention, they're just another bunch of squawky nuisances with a cause that nobody wants to hear about.

I wonder what the next word in the cycle will be.  I want to be ahead of the curve in using it as an insult.

I think the companies do it themselves to get in the news. How many groups for people with Downs Syndrome are really paying attention to Kat Von D's makeup line in Sephora? It's a relatively small line - not even a whole shelf, and it's very expensive. It's a super niche line, it doesn't have huge signs in the store...

Basically, you'd have to be extremely into makeup to even know about the existence of this line, never mind the name of a shade of lipstick. I should also note that the color names of lipsticks (and most makeup) are written in very small type, and usually on the bottom of the item. In Sephora, the name would also be on the shelf, but again, in very small type.

That's a shame. I like the color.

/Kat Von D is kind of a celebutard

At this point the only people defining "Retard" an offensive term toward "developmentally challenged" children are the retarded parents. The world has moved on. let us have our words stop calling attention to your little snowflakes.

/yes I am bitter.
//its a word, words only hurt if they are engraved into pointy things that are then put into you.

So a bunch of celebutards were offended.  I wish I had bought some to give as gifts

So the 'Dumbass' tag is for who now?  Could it be the store for stocking the lipstick, or the store for pulling the lipstick? Speak up Subby

So what does calling the parents 'retarded' mean, if not an offensive term used to compare the parents to mentally retarded people?

Do you know why the word retard is such a good word to describe the retarded?

Because retards are retarded.

Think about it.

I was thinking that they ought to take the stuff they're pulling off the shelves and start hawking it on eBay, assuming that eBay isn't spineless enough to prohibit it. In which case, set up an eCommerce site and sell it directly. Nothing gets the young set more excited than using a product that gets a rise out of The Man, so Kat D may as well tap into that.

I don't know. When I use the word "retard" I think of it as "stupider than any person with actual developmental difficulties". Maybe I'm rationalizing, but I don't think of kids with Downs Syndrome as retards. I either think of them as "kid with Downs Syndrome" or "developmentally disabled" or the admittedly offensive "slow". I save up the word retard for talking about actual stupid people doing stupid things. I kind of assumed everyone else used the word in the same way, which is kind of stupid of me. One might even say... :)

If we ban the R-word, your kid loses the extra chromosome. Science.

2013-11-08 05:36:17 PM
OK, anecdotal story time...

I grew up in a neighborhood with a family that had a developmentally challenged daughter.  Other kids in the neighborhood would rush past on their bikes and shout "Is she RETARDED?"  "Look at the RETARD!"

I did it once to "fit in" and felt awful about it, and sure enough my parents told me to not do that.

So I'm for not using the word in that way.  So many other words to use in place of it, just open a dictionary or thesaurus and find another one.

My concrete is drying too fast, I will add some developmentally challenged to it to slow the drying down.

It's amazing how much rationalization, tortured "logic", and just plain foolishness is displayed in this thread. Most of the usual suspects had to "defend" the usage of yet another discriminatory insult. Bizarre.

While Kat Von D's response is to be expected, I'm surprised at how quickly Sephora dodged on this one. Amazon has pulled the listing, as well.

Oh, hellll. You could apply that to cars with a traditional manual transmission, they have a clutch master cylinder and a clutch slave cylinder. Maybe Monday when I go to work I'll bring up how culturally insensitive it is, for trolling purposes.
