For a one-score win, that game was completely lopsided for 50 minutes.  Great final quarter as a neutral observer.

It was really amazing how badly Orgeon shot themselves in the foot for 3 quarters, Not to say Stanford wasn't great, but 0 points on 3 trips inside the 30 yard line (including 2 inside the 10) is pretty quick way to lose again. Also, Stanford's OL was killing Oregon.

Congrats, Stanford, you just cost the conference $15 million or so. Well, you too, Oregon, since your turnovers were beyond asinine. Thomas falls directly on the ball and doesn't try to grab it against Stanford's guy. Mariota is outside of the pocket and could throw it away...instead he opts to get hit by three dudes for what would have been a three-yard loss and a ticking clock even IF he maintained control.

/beats me why fans of neither team within the conference are happy with their school losing money
//would've been really funny if Oregon got that last onside kick and won 27-26 after getting waxed the entire game

This is anecdotal of course, but wife teaches AVID at her high school. Each year, UCLA hosts an "i'm going to college" event where they give away a bunch of tickets to local middle and high schools. It's a fun event and it lets the kids see college life outside of the school stuff.

Anyhow, I've gone with her as a chaperone to a few of the games. I think we've seen them play Cal, WSU, and Oregon. I will say without a doubt that the Oregon fans were the biggest assholes I've seen at one of those games. And this when Oregon was at the peak and UCLA was bottomed out.

The problem with this scenario is that it assumes Auburn can beat Bama in the Iron Bowl.  This is, quite frankly, a pretty stupid assumption to make.

Oklahoma got three shots to embarrass themselves in the national championship, it's only fair to let OSU have another go at it to even it out.

Probably.  But the Pac-12 could still get two BCS games.

Oregon will still be attractive as an at large team if they win out and Stanford wins the Pac-12 title game.

And on that note, Stanford is like Nike U #2 seeing that Phil Knight got his MBA from there.

Oregon has a problem, though, and that problem is the Orange Bowl.  Assuming a Bama/FSU championship game, the Orange Bowl would get two of the first three picks (after the Sugar takes an SEC team) and their options will be Louisville/UCF/Houston, Fresno or Northern Illinois (assuming one finishes undefeated), Oregon, a 2-loss B1G team (Wisconsin or Michigan State), a 2-loss Big 12 team, and possibly 1-loss Clemson.

Would Oregon travel to Miami?  At least better than Wisconsin or Oklahoma State?  I don't know.  But if the Orange goes with Wisconsin and Oklahoma or Oklahoma State, then the last two spots would have to go the AAC winner and either Fresno or Northern Illinois and Oregon would be shut out.

Basically, Oregon really needs to be rooting for Fresno and Northern Illinois to lose and free up an extra at-large spot.  I'd love to see Oregon-Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl.

Why would they pose the biggest threat?

The criticisms of Oregon are the same as ever: They're too small at OL.  Bama's average lineman is 15 pounds heavier.  FSU's is 25 pounds heavier.  Those are huge differentials, and it shows in games like these.

And they're simply not as talented as other top-tier teams on their front seven.  They weigh a lot these days, but the DEs are tall and lanky, and they run a 3-4 with an undersized NT.  So of course the DEs are going to get pushed back by more solidly-built OTs and OGs with lower centers of gravity, and the NT's going nowhere against a big OL.

I really like Oregon.  It's an excellent program and really exciting team to watch.  And much of the problem is simply a function of the West not being a great area for non-skill position players.

But it's not like their demise was hard to see coming.

As I understand it from an article at SBNation, the Orange Bowl would have two or the first three picks.  Sugar would have the other (and likely use it on an SEC team to replace Bama).  It sounded like Clemson-Oregon was the likely matchup.

I don't know much about how the bowls pick (and don't really care), so no idea how accurate that could be.

Yeah if Oregon had run the conference the Pac-12 getting two bids would basically depend on them getting the NCG, with someone else (Stanford is they only had two losses, otherwise the South champ) getting the Rose Bowl.  Granted Oregon might have had the inside edge to the NCG, but it was not a given.  But if Stanford keeps it up (Go Card!) and gets to the Rose Bowl, a one-loss Oregon team would be a very likely BCS pick like last year (since they do grab headlines and fans travel well).
