She said: "I felt bad that other children didn't have toys. I didn't know that before."

Adorable.

Good thing this didn't happen in the US, or the Chamber of Commerce would whisk her and her family off to a little room at the back of Toys R Us for reprogramming.

Yeah, this. Not a hero to 'MURICA!

Emmileah's mum, Shannaz Noormohamed

Santa doesn't deliver to ethnic sounding people's homes anyways, kid.

I was curious about the origins of the name "Emmileah," since I don't think I've ever met someone named that before. I was thinking it was invented by someone who couldn't choose between "Emily" and "Leah." But, no, it's actually got some historical basis and is the short form of "Emmaline" (which seems strange because it's not really any shorter) and means "one who flatter, hard working."

Also, how does this girl *know* she's on the good list? Last I checked, Santa didn't publish that. She's either making some dangerous assumptions, or she has inside contacts. Which, you know, has a very high risk of landing her on the "bad" list anyway. Maybe she knows that Santa found out she's stolen access to his list and she's trying to head off the fallout from that with a little bit of self-sacrifice.

It's a cute story and all, but I'm skeptical about her true motivations.

That's nice, honey, but Santa doesn't exist. So giving up your toys really isn't going to help anyone else.

Besides, Santa is actually just a make believe person that your parents use to encourage you to be on your best behavior. Have you ever heard them say, "Santa only brings toys to good children" or "If you keep that up, I'll call Santa and tell him not to bring your present this year"? That's just a trick they use to keep you in line. There isn't really a Santa, and they really aren't going to take your present back to the store. Oh yeah, they already bought you a present. It's probably hidden on a high shelf in their bedroom. Take a look!

I'll take her share. I've been eyeballing this for about a month.

She's smarter than you think. Thousands of people will now read this article and think "what a good girl... let me get her a present".

Its a scam!

Seriously though... she is awesome! I wonder if I can swap one of my kids for her.

If I were her, I'd just ask Santa to change the spelling of my name to Emily.

I'm sure her motivations are pure.  I'm also sure her parents put her up to this.

Well of course she doesn't want presents. Since where do muslins celebrate Christmas?

Dear Emmileah,

Why the fark are you writing to me now?  It's goddamn November 8th.  How do you know you're on my good list?  Remember that time you threw a tantrum at the mall because your mommy wouldn't buy you a toy?  No?  I do.  Even if you were, you got a month and a half of being good left to go.  Is that a Christmas tree you have up and decorated already?  What the hell is wrong with you.  And what kind of asshole do you think I am if you think I ignore the kids in poor families?  They get gifts but those kids aren't as materialistic as you, they get the gift of family and love.  Apparently you're replacing those with Barbie.

Don't ever write to me again.  You're off my delivery list.
Warm wishes,
~Santa

this life would be so much funnier if Santa wrote back.
/unfortunately, a lot of kids would stop writing.

Mommy had to tell her that so she would pass on presents this year, given that daddy has to pay
400 more a month for his modified health plan so it can cover birth control for Catholic families.

Barry says he is sorry you can't have presents the next three years.

I am going to come off as sounding very "get off my lawn", but I have to say that kids now have it so good that they probably don't need christmas to get toys etc.  I am only in my early 30's but when I was younger you didn't get toys at all except on your birthday or christmas.  So in fact, assuming you still believe in santa, you are on a level playing field with poorer children, because you both only have one shot to ask the magic man for toys.

But my guess is she probably already has an i-phone, gets candy whenever she wants, and gets toys all through the year, to the point where she doesn't really need a christmas to ask for anything.

"Despite being on the 'good list.'" That's the key to the whole thing right there. Maybe she knows she's *not* on the good list, and giving up her presents will give her license to do whatever the hell she wants for the next seven weeks without fear of consequence.

Christmas is the ultimate beta-female holiday.  It's about giving and warmth, ideologies you cannot possibly understand.

You are giving 6-year-olds waaay too much intelligence credit.  They don't work like that.  Yet.

My daughter made this request last year.  My response did not include photographing the child and sending the story to a reporter.

2013-11-08 10:21:36 AM
I believe that this little girl genuinely reflected on the idea of kids not having what she does.  I also think some of the comments that cast doubt on the truth of the motivations of the little girl are also illuminative.  We use elaborate ideological,  social, and religious frameworks to obscure the fact that is revealed if this story is exactly true.  That those frameworks are mostly bullshat that we use for cover, and if child knowing only that another child was in need reacted to give from her bounty to help them then how could we defend our position of not doing the same for others.

And a little child shall lead them.

She looks like she has parents that just continually buy stuff throughout the year then wonder how can they make Christmas special and encourage something like this and she don't give a shiat because she has plenty of stuff.

2013-11-08 10:54:17 AM
She's just using this letter as a smokescreen to explain why she's not getting any toys from Santa... it turns out she's on the naughty list for that thing she did.

trappedspirit: She looks like she has parents that just continually buy stuff throughout the year then wonder how can they make Christmas special and encourage something like this and she don't give a shiat because she has plenty of stuff.

Our son is like that. On the one hand, it's a bit irritating that he doesn't get excited about Christmas (but why should he?). On the other hand, it's nice since it means we don't have to knock ourselves out trying to make Christmas morning special for him. There's lots of other things that make the season fun and interesting that don't revolve around presents.

It does irritate the relatives though. They keep asking "What should we buy him?" and we say "Nothing. Don't buy him anything. He doesn't need it." They don't understand, but the real answer "Spend some time with him." isn't one they can accomplish either.

2013-11-08 11:13:25 AM
Sounds like a scheme by the parents to get people to send their daughter gifts. People read the story and are so touched by the little girls selflessness that they reward her with a gift.

Indeed. I'd like to think that every child has at least a moment or two like this. Mine did, and I don't think it's uncommon either. The only thing that makes this story "special" is the publicity.

If she was Fark ProgressiveTM she would be insisting that Santa forcibly  take toys  from "rich " kids and give them to others while allowing her to keep her toys because she is compassionate.

If you want to skip our house, go right ahead. I won't be offended. Really I won't. Spend your time elsewhere. I really mean it.

Kid doesnt want gifts. why do we care.
1 of 2 situations
1)Shes literally asking us to ignore her and we're doing the opposite
2)Shes doing it as a ploy for attention and we shouldnt be giving it

Right. I mean it was a good thing that they got a good picture of her with the letter before calling the press.

Well, as much as I appreciate you all being hilarious. I KNOW Emmileah and her mum and you will never meet a sweeter kid in your lifetime.
Be as cynical and jaded as your lives have made you but please try to remember the innocence of youth when you had hope and optimism in the world. If everyone thought like Emmileah this world would be a far better place.
As for the pic I took that and put it on her fundraising FB page and from that she went on to local media page where the local press found the story.
Also, it must be added that she HAS asked for one thing for Christmas. she wants to take her old toys and any gifts she DOES receive to the local childrens hospital.
And Shannaz is rather less Muslim than any of you, she has an Asian surname owing to her Half Caste Grandfather, which makes Emm about 1/16 Asian. Forgive me for thinking that this gives her slightly more Ethnic Credibility than any American White living in America.
Forgive my bitterness but Emm is 6 and a truly generous and caring soul that really wants to make the world a better place, you would know that if you met her, instead you want to crush her, she would be heartbroken to read some of these comments.
Also I would like to point out that this Story comes from the TRUE land of the free, where we still have hope and confidence in the future......Britain.
Now I will leave you to attack me and my comments and ultimately prove my point.
